What is the dullest sport to watch?
Football
share[deleted]
Not that I follow it but I heard the rules changed in the early 90s and many fans turned away from the sport because of it.
shareIt wasn't a rule change, it was a culture change that affected it.
For decades since it was first formed, baseball had been a much quicker, crisper played sport. Most games lasted about 2 hours, and games under two hours were not uncommon. Today, 3 to 4 hours is the norm. But it's not just the time, it's the pace.
It's true that baseball has more relief specialists, so there are more pitching changes, but the biggest problem affecting the pace is the habits of both the pitchers and hitters.
Back when I was a kid, an at-bat was almost a singular event. The batter stayed in the batter's box until he either struck the ball or struck out. Today, a batter goes for a leisurely stroll after every pitch, then he undoes and resnaps his batting gloves. After this, he gets back in. Meanwhile, 23-35 seconds has gone by before another pitch, and that's if we're lucky enough to not have the batter step out or the pitcher step off the rubber triggering another 30 second waste of time. Pitchers are no better. After a pitch, they also may go for a short walk around the mound.
Watch any vintage game on youtube and you'll see what I'm talking about.
It's filtered down to little league and women's softball.
Baseball knows what they need to do, but they won't do it.
That definitely says a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if those extra couple of hours are meant to give marketers more advertising space. You sound like you've played the game or have been to a bunch of them. A PBS documentary I watched years ago (don't remember its name) claimed that the rise of the free agency of star players incidentally did not help matters either, no longer personally identifying with a team that would gives fans a more organic connection to the sport, despite good intentions.
shareI have played, and I continue to play. On Saturdays I play in an over 38 hardball league, and on Wednesday night I play slow pitch softball in an industrial league (playing with guys in their 20s...) despite having turned 61 this year.
In softball, most guys stand in the box but then we start with a 1-1 count to speed things up. A 7 inning softball game averages about an hour and fifteen minutes. Because there are two to three games scheduled for each field (depending on lighting), the games must move briskly. The hardball league is a pain in the ass. Those are also 7 innings but average 3 hours. When I step in the batters box, I stay there.
At first, I'm sure a lot of the younger ball players thought you were in over your head continuing to take part in the sport at your age, thinking you're more prone to injury than they are, not fully appreciating that staying active has given you a great deal of physical fitness not many can say they have at 61. Soon, they realized, they can't take you for granted. This is a conversation worth a fun share with others.
shareI do stay active, but I think I do because I am able to, not the other way around. IOW, I think I was fortunate in my genetics. I just had a complete physical and the doctor said I'd live to be 100. I need no medications of any kind and my legs feel like they did when I was 30.
But I also think there's a bit of state of mind influence in health. I think a lot of people give up when they hit a certain age. But watch the malls; you'll see a lot of older people walking briskly and keeping themselves in better shape than their parents did at the same age.
MLB has to get a handle on the length of their games or they are in danger of losing a generation of fans.
shareTotally agree. Add to that the extreme shortsightedness of starting World Series games after 8 on the east coast. When I became a rabid baseball fan in the mid 1960s, we would run home from school and pick up the game about the second or third inning and watch it until it was over before dinner.
Today, WS, division and championship series games end after midnight. How many people stay up and watch games that late? How many kids?
Almost nobody i know can stay up that late
I wont stay up past 10 for any game on a work night
Midnight!?!
No way
Baseball is a great sport to watch live....along with about 20 beers.
shareCricket or chess.
shareAs much as I like chess I completely understand. Computers are even allowed to play sometimes! (^ ^)
Sports are more fun to watch if you've played them yourself. Gives it that personal connection.
I still can't figure out cricket.
share22 Guys being boring.
shareLOL! I've watched a few British shows where cricket is featured. Β―\_(γ)_/Β― I don't get it at all.
shareIt's an elitist sport, which means people only come to socialize and pay no attention to what's happening on the field. A game can go on for days, that's how silly it is.
shareI've never watched cricket, but this just reminded me of a line from an Indian movie, where a character said "cricket is a bloody waste of time, man! Eleven players standing on the field scratching their crotches all the time."
shareNot if it's live Battlechess!

Who says iΒ΄m from Europe?
Some clarification for you, the whole world except Trumpistan know what football is and that itΒ΄s not american eggball.
Also we donΒ΄t use retarded measurement units like "feet". WTF feet? Are you serious? Who invented this? Some borderline retarded person.

Lol sure, everyone knows Canadians are polite, so you are a clearly not Canadian and therefore a liar.
No scoring EVER? 2-3 goals every game speak a different language.
ItΒ΄s simply a challenging sport so scoring isnΒ΄t as easy.

I am a Canadian retard.
sharecar racing
shareR_Kane may tell you otherwise about Formula 1. After watching NASCAR so many times I need a break, so agree with you there. Reminds me of a "Simspons" episode where Homer dares to stay sober for 24 hours, goes to an Isotopes baseball game with his drunk friends only to remark how boring it is without drinking.
shareI used to like NASCAR but lost interest when they changed the format to "The Chase." And these days, with no TV access it's hard to get excited about any sport. I will listen to baseball on the radio - it's part of the "sounds of summer."

Golf. I don't watch it! But it looks very dull and boring.
shareGreat way to punish someone you don't like whose only fun option is to watch TV with you. Easier to do years ago before fast access to the Internet.
shareThe only time I liked to watch golf was during the winter - it was so nice to see green! Other than that, nope.
shareBut golf videogames are fun. How can this be? One of the most boring sport is actually fun as a videogame.
shareWhat? No disinterest in Curling?
shareCurling gets huge TV ratings here in Canada. The winters are long.
shareWell...π
share[deleted]
Very popular in Scotland I recall.
share[deleted]
So that's what they do with a lot of their free time. (^ ^)
share[deleted]
I should have known! (^ ^) Tell me about it, mate; the modern refrigerator, neon lights, cloning of sheep, the steam-powered engine (Don't quote me on that one). What will you Scots come up with next?

I've watched curling a couple times during the winter Olympics. I don't get it at all. It looks like the dumbest thing I've ever seen.
