Movies or series you’ve bailed out on❓

By bailed out on, I mean you just couldn't continue watching it for whatever reason. There are many different reasons, of course, all personal.

I just gave up on Whitechapel (2009-2013) that was rated 8/10. I don’t like the jumpy style – from here to there, and there – just bing, bing, bing. It drives me crazy when I can’t really see what this or that was. Much of the time the lighting was so dark I couldn’t really determine what was happening. I get that they want to set a dark, sinister mood, but sometimes it goes too far – certainly not the only show to do it.

Gambit (2012) I grabbed this DVD from my library the last time I was there. I like Colin Firth and Alan Rickman, so why not? I didn’t know about its rather mediocre rating of 5.7/10 before I chose it. I watched about 20 minutes before chucking it back in its case to go back. Too stupid for my taste, even with Firth and Rickman.

The TV series Shades of Blue with Jennifer Lopez. Was really liking it until the Ray Liotta character kissed the other guy. Turned it off right then and never watched another second of it.

Gave up on Supernatural as I just didn't care anymore. Same with most procedural cop shows, like Criminal Minds, CSI, Law and Orders. I usually get bored with full length series (like 22-24 ep) after about 5 seasons if not sooner.

I usually don't bail in the middle of a movie, but series that I couldn't finish
The Hangover
Transformers
Fast and the Furious
Underworld
Resident Evil

I have bailed on many series, but most I come back around on. I stepped away from Weeds at some point and didn't come back to finish it off for years. Seasons 4 through 6 or 7 were pretty bad but the final season I thought brought it back home. I've been saving the final season of Oz for over 10 years because I love it and don't want it to end. Dexter I dropped out and then caught back up, but the end was dissappointing. I stopped watching the Sopranos like 4 epsiodes into the 1st season and kept trying to go back, but the 1st season never hooked me. On my final attempt I forced myself through season 1 and finally really liked the remainder of the show, especially the last few episodes.

reply

The Sopranos is another one I never tried. Not interested in watching anything about the mob.

reply

It's more interesting after you get into it, but I wasn't interested in mob stuff at all and that's why it took me a while to get hooked. The 1st season is the weakest, and so for me it was like a chore I had get through. After season 1 was done it drew me back nonstop and was very compelling.

reply

So, Sopranos is more than just about a boss screaming and yelling obscenities at friends, family, and co-workers?

reply

Sort of. And no, it's that, but it's just about family and therapy. It's very good, but for me was very hard to get into. Worth it though.

reply

If it's anything like 'A Bronx Tale,' where we get to see acts of human kindness in even the most vile of individuals, I can see the appeal. One of those "beneath the surface" shows.

reply

It's not not like A Bronx Tale

reply

I would hate to be their therapist, regardless how good the money is.

reply

Dr. Melfi has one of the most interesting arcs on the show. It's very good but you've got to work at it in the beginning to become invested, or I did.

reply

As MJFrogg pointed out in one of his recent threads, doctor characters are underrated, being the backbone of a solid show's cast. As a Trekkie, I can relate. All the Star Trek series start at a snail's pace before bolding going.

I'll pretty much watch any movie, no matter how awful, still amused and switching my gears into unintentional comedy mode. Scary movies are my kryptonite though. Sorry horror fan aficionados! I'm a fan of Xena: Warrior Princess, an action-adventure series with other ingredients thrown into the mix. Beginning in the fifth season, it went off the rails, becoming extremely fan servicey and bizarre in ways I am still trying to comprehend. By the sixth and final season, it was totally different from the hot-striking iron of the first 4 seasons, which concludes on a strong note.

A lot of actors, such as the heralded Alan Rickman, sign onto some real stinkers; the films they participate in not being the same movies they agreed to do in the draft stages. I remember what you said about Downton Abbey after the first 3 series, going in a different direction.

reply

I suspect it's huge frustration for actors when a project starts out sounding so good, but ends up being a real turkey. Most actors probably have a few films that they wish would disappear permanently.

reply

One of the most famous examples is Charlie Chaplin regretting his role in 'The Great Dictator' due to the sinister nature of the Nazis and the atrocities they committed a few years after the film was created that made fun of them. Too much life imitating art.

reply

I didn't know you felt that way about Downton Abbey. I made it through the first 2 seasons, and bailed.

reply

There are so many series I gave up on. With movies I lose interest in, at least I'll fast forward and try to watch a few key scenes.

I have a hard time watching a serie if the first 2 or 3 episodes don't grab my attention or if I can tell exactly what's going to happen. I find most series are way overrated on imdb or elsewhere. I gave up early on The Wire, West World, all of the superhero Netflix series, True Detective, Wentworth to name a few. The series I gave up much later are Vikings and The Walking Dead. The first when the vikings themselves stopped being interesting (I only cared about the Britons) and the second because I'm just sick of all the characters at this point and most episodes are just filler between season/mid-season premieres and finales.

reply

the second series of True Detective was horrible.

reply

I bailed out on Hannibal after 2 episodes because I didn't like the way it was made.

reply

I bailed out on Lost after 2 or 2 1/2 seasons.

reply

All in the Family jumped the shark when Mike and Gloria moved next door and I stopped watching.
