Something that existed ten years ago but exists no longer?

Circuit City

Blockbuster

reply

It's funny, with the entire universe of movies now available at my fingertips through services like Netflix, Amazon and Vudu, I actually watch fewer movies than I did in the days when I had a Blockbuster membership.

reply

You are wrong. I saw a story today saying that there is one left.

reply

When Donald Trump WASN'T a complete and utter world-wide joke.

reply

Who the hell payed any attention to Donald before he became POTUS?

reply

Exactly.

reply

I havn't seen a Radioshack in at least 10 years...Radioshack was great

Travel agencies.

payphones

reply

We still have them, you can't put coins in mind you. Only cards.

reply

Just about disappeared here in the suburbs.

reply

I accidentally locked myself out of my car about a year ago. I didn't have my cell phone with me (it was a quick trip to Penney's to return something). As I was walking to the nearby convenience store, I realized they probably no longer had payphones (they didn't). But I also realized the only phone number I remembered was Mr & Mrs Neighbor's landline and I knew they weren't home! It was only a 3-1/2 mile walk home. I sat in my backyard for about 20 minutes until they got home (they have a spare key to my house).

Imdb forums

reply

Sad isn’t it?

reply

I was surprised it wasn't the first answer considering where we are.

reply

It was my first thought when I read the post. Have to say, I really miss Imdb.

reply

Me too. I especially miss it when I read the old posts and see what a tremendous amount of valuable information people had to share.

reply

Exactly! Most of my time was spent reading in the film boards, so many interesting topics to explore. I only posted in a select few which now have become pretty much nonexistent. I think most of all I miss the friendship that was made with other posters that shared similar interests.

The first decade of the 2000s, I guess. It was easier when we could say "the 80's" and "the 90's." What do you call 2000 to 2009? I'm NOT calling it "The Aughts":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aughts

Even if that was the case, what do we call 2010 to 2019? The Tens? The Two Thousands, and then the Two-Thousand and Tens, is really all we have.

At least in two more years we'll be back in the 20's.

reply

The Naughties.

reply

Were you naughty in the Naughties? Only if you did them right!

reply

I call them the uh-ohs (00s).

Will we ever get past the "two thousand and eighteens?" Why don't more people say twenty-eighteen? Even during the uh-ohs, I said twenty-o-five rather than two thousand and five. I thought that when we made it to 2010 they'd switch, but no. Many still say two thousand and ___.

reply

I started with the two thousand bit when we hit the year 2000. I still say two thousand four...not 20-zero-4, two thousand 9, not 20-zero-9. Two thousand 18, etc. For one thing I’m a stickler when it comes to not saying the letter O instead of what it should be...zero. A phone number is not 555-2oo2...it’s 555-2 zero zero 2 or 555-2002. Numerical digits are not letters of the alphabet. When I write the digit 0, I add the / across the 0.

reply

I add the / when I write a zero, too. These days, you can't always tell if something is a letter or number.

reply

I always say two thousand.

Twenty-eighteen I can understand, that's alright.

But... twenty-oh-five? ONLY A MONSTER WOULD SAY THAT!!!!!

=)

reply

I guess I'm a monster then, at least in your eyes! 😉

Cassettes

reply

Still exist, just not being made anymore. As a matter of fact I bought one off ebay a few weeks ago.

reply

I still have mine and all my vinyl.

reply

I actually meant VHS cassette. Still counts, doesn't it?

reply

Oh right, yeah I reckon. I still see people trying to buy or sell those.
I've kept one or two and we still have a vhs machine somewhere.
One is The Keep by Michael Mann.

reply

Funnily enough, the movie I got was Manhunter by Michael Mann

reply

My favourite.
There are about six different cuts of Manhunter. It frustrates me that some scenes are missing from my bluray and the special edition.
Some kind soul spliced the whole thing together once and I have it on a memory card.

reply

I've seen 3 of the versions; the original theatrical cut, the anchor bay version and the director's cut. I like the anchor bay version the best out of those.
