The most apocalyptic ending to a film?
The ending to the director's cut of 1986's "Little Shop of Horrors."

shareI'm not well versed in this genre nor have I seen "Little Shop of Horrors" but the ending to 'The Machine War' in the "Animatrix" was a haunting experience. Not only did people lose their sense of humanity but the machines themselves lost the very thing they were fighting for, a sense of purpose and belonging, the right to exist, all thrown away in the pursuit of fiery vengeance and anger in retaliation for the hostility they received from humans who had grown afraid of them.
shareExcellent example.
I also want to throw in there "Melancholia" and "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (the '78 version).
Planet of the Apes - 1968
share[overview spoiler]
So tragic.
Heston starts the film with no hope in humanity, which is why he left for the space mission, regains it and even affirms it in the face of hypocrisy and injustice, only to go back to his previous pessimistic self at the end. He had nothing to lose at first, but lost everything anyway once he found something to fight for.
Resident Evil Apocalypse nuke blast
shareOn The Beach.
shareThe movie or the mini-series? Both of them were bleak, but the mini-series was especially depressing because it had more time to develop its characters.
When that Aussie officer and his wife gather their young kids to lay with them while they administer the pills that will kill them all before the radiation gets them... man, it doesn't get blacker than that.
Dr Strangelove - 1964
shareThere was a 1984/1985 TV movie called 'Special Bulletin', where some
people take over a nuclear ship off the coast of NC. There are nuclear missiles on board.
The movie plays like a live World News broadcast and was recorded on video-tape and not film, to seem more real.
SPOLIER!! : At the end of this film (I forget how) they all explode/
go off and a large portion of the surrounding coast and towns and people are obliterated.
