Gone too soon 😞

The tragedy of drug addiction (alcohol included) has taken a lot of people far too young. Whose death hit you?

Whitney Houston - age 48

reply

Elvis - technically died from heart disease but the abuse of prescription drugs was a factor. Thank you Dr Nick.

reply

Ironic you'd mention Whitney. I just re-watched the 1991/1992 ABC special "This Is Me" .

I recorded it the night it aired and watching her (yesterday) belt out a mostly acapelaa version of The Greatest Love of All in studio, with just her back up singers, reminded me of just how great she really was. ...and all thrown away for stupid fixes/drugs or whatever.

I can say this, in watching the 1881 concert scenes (which was the tour I saw in May 1991), she was definetly NOT on drugs then. I'm not accusing anyone but 'someone' started her on drugs and it had to be sometime after The Bodyguard.

Anyhow back to the main point and for me it doesn't matter 'how they went :

David Bowie (I consider under 90 too young)
George Michael
John Lennon
George Harrison
Prince
Michael Jackson ---> The most because he was the last person I expected this to happen too.
Elvis Presley

Buddy Holly
Richie Valens
J.P. Richardson aka The Big Bopper
Johnny Ace (early rock & roll singer, accidentally shot himself)
James Dean (the actor, not Jimmy Dean the singer)
Andy Gibb, Robin Gibb, Maurice Gibb
Donna Summer

There's so many singers, entertainers, actors in TV and movies and more that left us too early and for many different reasons. Whatever the reason, none are sadder than others...it's all just plain sad.

reply

I was aiming for drug-related deaths, but you're right that it's all just plain sad.

reply

Makes it even sadder about Whitney. She had one heck of a great set of pipes.

And since I'm a huge fan of The E Street Band,
Clarence Clemons

Finally, since no one has mentioned her,
Natalie Wood
(So, did Robert Wagner push her off the boat, or didn't he?)

Alan Ladd

reply

I didn't know his death was drug-related. What a shame at age 50.

reply

By the end he was an alcoholic. Very sad indeed.
He's been in some of my favorite films.

Veronica Lake too. Not necessarily and overdose but drugs and alcohol ravaged her.
She died on of the saddest deaths that I've heard about.

Tim Buckley died when he was was 28 of a heroine overdose.

His son Jeff Buckley died at age 31.
After a concert he went swimming and just disappeared.
Not drug related.

Two of my favorite musicians.

reply

Terry Kath

One of the founder of Chicago.
Alcohol and drug abuse.
During a party a group was playing Russian Roulette.
Kath thought the gun was empty but it turned out it wasn't.
Shot himself in the head.

Without the drugs and alcohol one would think it wouldn't have happened.

reply

I don't think I knew this. Chicago is part of the soundtrack of my youth. Fancy Colours was the theme at our Senior Prom.

reply

He was good musician and a great songwriter.

Yes, two more that left us far to early. I remember being very sad about Judy. I felt bad that she had so many struggles in her life. I think that's when I realized what fame could do to a person.
