Your favorite genres? Some examples??

Lets chat about our favorite genres, offer a fine example or two of each and share ideas about the things we want our fellow chatters to see and hopefully enjoy too:)
Me first!
I love...

Horror- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a lovely masterpiece that still disturbs and leaves one thinking they have seen a bloodbath when in fact there is very little blood in the film!
Masterpiece (several actors were disturbed and or harmed during filming)

Sci Fi- The Empire Strikes Back
This one had thrills, great FX, a sweet romantic angle and an awesome climactic lightsaber fight between the baddest dude in the universe VS a brave young pup who just wasnt ready but left it all on the floor anyway
Plus Han Solo...c'mon, total winner of a Sci Fi adventure

Action- First Blood is the rousing action tale of a government trained baddass trying to adjust to his new, peaceful life but society and the law wont stop pushing him
He makes a whole damn town regret that ingratitude
One of Sly's best movies and up there with the TOP actioners of all time

Sci-fi - I love Star Wars but I prefer "hard scifi" to the more fantasy oriented stuff. Movies like Moon, The Martian, Contact etc.

War - If I'd have to pick just one genre as my favourite it would be war movies. Top 2 on a shared first place are Black Hawk Down and The Thin Red Line. But mix in war AND scifi together and you got a real winner.

Indie films - this has become a thing for me in the last 5+ years. Noah Baumbach is one of my favourite directors and enjoy pretty much everything the Duplass brothers put out.

I really liked The Martian and i think i know what you mean by 'hard sci fi...stuff that could actually happen as opposed to sci fi fantasy like Star Wars or Flash Gordon, etc...

reply

That's exactly what I meant. Not that I don't like the other stuff too but I just find it more fascinating when it's something that could actually happen in the future.

I wouldn't say I really have a favorite genre. I like pretty much anything if it's well-made. There are some genres I don't like much and am unlikely to be interested in, such as rom-coms. Also, paradoxically, I'm not crazy about most Westerns, but my favorite movie of all time is "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". So that kind of says a bit about how I approach movies. I just like whatever is good, without a lot of preference for genre.

Perfectly reasonable

Horror- Halloween.Aside from being a classic it was the first horror movie i saw as a kid that made me fall in love with the genre. It also introduced me to one of my favorite actors Donald Pleasance.

Action- I lean towards Die hard (Yippee-ki-yay motherf***er) but i also love Lethal weapon.

Scifi- Possibly Robocop.

reply

That could easily be my list as well
You know your classics man

Donald Pleasance is a wonderful all time legend

I dig your style

Horror - The Blair Witch Project - being lost in a desolate area where no one can help you is a very real and terrifying scenario. Throw in a mysterious stalking presence and you have yourself a terrifying movie.

Action - The Raid Redemption - Nothing like watching an odd hour and a half of a badass SWAT team member taking on a long chain of deadly criminals whilst trapped inside an apartment complex.

Blair Witch was great indie-horror movie making
Scary stuff!

The Raid was amazing
The sequal is great action too!

If you have not seen it check out Dredd some time...similar to Raid and just as violent and thrilling
