When did MTV start to go downhill?

IMO I've thought MTV slowly started to go downhill when they've first aired "Real World" but didn't become really bad until when they've cancelled "Beavis And Butthead" in late 1997

To me MTV's best years was from 1981 to 1991.

I agree though. B and B is still one of the best shows of all time

The B&B revival season they did in 2011 was fantastic, I was really surprised. I never even cared for the show, but "season 8/9" (different number depending on where you look) was SO good.

I enjoyed most of Read World and Road Rules for that matter. I even got into Jersey Shore one day during a marathon. IMO, when the Teen Mom shit aired, thats when I had to turn the channel.

Right after "Video Killed the Radio Star" aired!

Videos were nothing more than glorified commercials and did far more damage than good, even if your name isn't Billy Squier.

reply

It's a shame MTV had to ruin Billy Squier's career and caused the early 80's adult contemporary music (which I loved) to fall off the radar.

reply

I agree
Those 80s videos were mostly dreadful

When Martha Quinn left.

what year did Martha Quinn left?

reply

Precisely. BS hit it. It was a sea change.

reply

around the time of Real World is probably it, maybe a little before..as the videos fell off and the crap shows took their place. But its pretty much the same for most cable channels that survive their first years, they evolve for better or worse over time. I never turn on MTV now.
