do folks with generic movie tastes bother you?

You know what I'm talking about. The guy who says their favorite movie is The Dark Knight or Fight Club, or the chick who says their favorite movie is The Breakfast Club or Mean Girls.

For me personally, it's only annoying when the person claims that they're also a major movie buff or a film student. It makes me wonder what else have they actually seen when their tastes are so damn generic. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying folks who like these films are automatically dumb and inferior, as I myself like most of them (with the exception of The Breakfast Club). But I find that folks who list nothing but such safe, generic choices as their favorites are often the type of people who don't watch much outside their comfort zone (as in foreign films, films made pre-1970 etc.) Again, not saying that it makes them inferior, just a little uninformed.

To avoid coming off as a snob, some of my favorite "generic" movies include Scarface, Inglourious Basterds, and Braveheart. My "less generic" choices include Malena, Robin and Marian, and Body Double.

I wish my wife would come to that understanding. I am usually stuck watching a show or movie she prefers while she often falls asleep.

Hallmark movies, right? I hate those movies, every plot is the same, rich girl visits her mother's ranch and falls in love with they guy that cleans the stalls, doesn't go back to her $300,000 per year job to marry this loser, then go back to the ranch to sleep on $23.00 mattress for the rest of their pathetic lives, gag me with a spoon!!!! lol

Not at all, to me films are primarily to entertain. It doesn't make a person smart because they like to over analyze films, often that can lead to a lack of enjoyment of many films because they are not good enough or "stupid". We have a poster on this board that seems to hate most movies and I think its because they expect more of them than a person should. Films are entertainment, anything they provide beyond that is bonus.

A lot of truth in your comment... So kany people deny themselve joy just because they are too nit picky...

It doesn't bother me much, but I do find that people, even movie enthusiasts, don't have much exposure to pre 1970s movies... This is unfortunate and is only matched by people's ignorance of foriegn language cinema...

Pre-1970 American cinema is underexposed... In particular movies from the 50s and 40s, yet they are very watchable and accessible to our contemporary audiences... The colour movies and the black and white movies look great...

I think a great thing happens when we watch movies from before the 1970s, we reach beyond the movies that have influenced most people alive, including 'most' current filmmakers and critics, we get exposed to the sensibilities and ideas of a earlier generations and develop empathy for them when we recognise the humanity in their art... It really broadens our understanding of what film can do...

Plus, there are loads of great, fun and entertaining movies from the past... People are missing out 😉

I like to recommend earlier movies. Hitchcock is easy to recommend, as his thrillers from the 40s and 50s are so watchable and run circles around a lot of thrillers of today in terms of mood and atmosphere and sheer entertainment value... A gateway drug to that era... Elia Kazan movies, like Splendor in The Grass are worth recommending as dramas.. Very moving, beautiful people (Natalie Wood as eye candy😎)... etc...

I wouldn’t say it bothers me. To each their own.

I'm with you on this point.
One thing that may bother me, maybe bother isn’t the right word , perhaps surprises
Is a better word are people who won’t watch movies that are in black and white or won’t
watch foreign films.

If you’re a true movie fan why would exclude some of the greatest films ever made?

I would say way over half of my top 100 movies are either black and white or foreign.
Some are even BOTH ! I know , I know. **loudly gasps in astonishment**

Well what would you consider the right answer to this question? Hereditary?
Not everyone is into gruesome movies and that is okay.

reply

No. Movies that are considered "generic" favorites tend to be very good, very impactful movies, which is what makes them common choices.

Kind of like the single from an album -- It's generally the best track, or at least the most marketable/playable/radio-worthy/catchy/etc.
