How do people cope with getting fired or losing their jobs?

And if they are desperate for money, how do they manage to find new jobs, quick or otherwise?

And on a related note, if someone does nothing wrong, do they usually NOT lose their job and whatnot, including for incompetence-related reasons?

The simple answer is they get a new job. Meanwhile they can usually collect unemployment insurance benefits.

In film, the great imitator of "life"---Here is how it can & does happen,,,it's from Rod Serling's "Patterns" 1956..."Bill Briggs" is a Vice President of this company. The bolded encompasses us all...

- [On our level you don't get fired, you know that. After thirty years of productive work, they can't say to a man like me, "Alright, now get out!" They just can't do that. So what do they do? They create a situation. A situation you can't work in and finally that you can't live in with this tension, abuse. Small humiliations. It all starts out on a scale so subtle, so microscopic that at first you can't really believe it's happening at all. But gradually the thing begins to take shape. The pieces fit together - all the little bits. And it becomes unmistakable. They chip away at your pride, your security until you begin to have doubts, and then fears.]

My wife has been out of work for over year, she keeps searching. We will have to do some unemployment. Generally a lot of stress is involved.

You have to proceed cautiously at "Unemployment" >>>especially<<< in times of prosperity. (They) have the time now to vet you thoroughly. Slow down there and listen to their questions carefully before answering. Slow down, look eye, slow down, make them slow down. Consider each query individually. Don't let them rush you.

Yeah it has been a process, we have taken most thing pretty slowly. So we will see. Hopefully she will get a bite, unfortunately her age works against her. IN my area people don't often hire Admin Assistants in their 40s, and her health excludes more labor intensive jobs.

You must protect yourself and the monetary benefits you've earned & accrued. Slow down and realize what's at stake monetary wise. Getting fired vs resigning/quitting can have an incredible impact on monetary concerns. (They) know this and it is a tool they use to leverage your departure. This is where you need someone at your side, wife/husband/true friend to see you thru this crisis. If you're alone you're going to find it difficult to stand fast in the ranks. (The company) will come after you like the last pork chop on the plate. Protect your money. Discern which path out of the company is to your best benefit. Not theirs, yours. Keep your mouth shut and eyes and ears open. Trust me, you will hear everything you need. When they talk to you it ain't idle chatter. It's all on the record. They are walking you to the rocks.

IMO you always need to be improving yourself...in other ways you have to keep moving to higher position jobs and you resign and take another job offer before they fire you...in that way you get the upper hand.

been on ssd for 8 years, about to enter the workforce fulltime, this worries me

i have proven to have a hard time holding jobs when i was younger but im a confused and sometimes delusional, not even on drugs, genetics and upbringing

i noticed low skill jobs that are hard to get in certain parts of the country , out in the west coast it is easier to get those jobs though, youll hate your job but at least employment isnt a problem, or maybe im biased
