What did you watch on this first week of spring?(18/03-24/03)

Not many movies for me but long movies that took me a few evenings to watch:

The Godfather: Part III (1990 DVD) : ‘’ In the midst of trying to legitimize his business dealings in New York City and Italy in 1979, aging Mafia Don Michael Corleone seeks to avow for his sins, while taking his nephew Vincent Mancini under his wing.’’ This movie was tragic. This was a good movie. This tragedy was a good one. I really liked Keaton and Garcia was a nice addition. Pacino's acting was uneven and I was not always believing the character but overall I was moved. 7.5-8/10

The Transformers: The Last Knight (2017 Netflix): I liked the show, the toys and the whole movie franchise but this is the weakest entry story wise and it gave me a few headaches with the erratic cocaine fueled editing. It was still fun, colorful and action packed. I would be curious to see the final editing result on computer though. There must me over 10 000 tiny clips. It’s crazy. Shout-out to my man Sir Edmund Burton. Props to you homeboy, Im sure you get plenty of ‘’whoopee’’ with your mighty knowledge of medieval magic. 6/10

Game Over, Man (2018 Netflix): ''Three friends are on the verge of getting their video game financed when their benefactor is taken hostage by terrorists.'' The guys from Workaholics go Hollywood and the result is highly forgettable. It's almost funny and almost entertaining but it's none of that. The violence was not very good either. As a member of the PWESALOITL association (People Who Experienced Salvia At Least Once In Their Lives) I enjoyed seeing salvia introduced in a film for the first time. He played it well. 4.5-5/10

reply

I'm ready this week but I gotta wait until I get out of work to compile my thoughts, I kept a pretty detailed log.

reply

Awesome, meanwhile you can comment on mine if you saw any of them.

Peace

reply

Only one of yours I saw was Godfather III, but I have really never given it a real chance. I've fallen asleep or turned it off too many times to count, but I will try again soon. I'm off work now so I'm about to compose a big post here for you.

Hamlet 2000 - 8/10 - Only my second viewing of this movie and I love it, almost as much as the Kenneth Branagh version. Ethan Hawke is a fine Hamlet and draws me into the character and story more than any other portrayer, except perhaps Olivier. Would watch again and again.

Romeo + Juliet 1996 - 8/10 - I've seen this many times and it still ranks as my favorite Baz Luhrman film. The modern setting and cast is so very 90s and nostalgia may be affecting my score here, but everyone plays their part so well and the imagery is lush and evocative.

Children of Men 2006 - 10/10 - I watched this many times back when it was released, but this is my first viewing in a long time. Can't say a bad word about it, best Clive Owen performance, best Alfonso Cuarón movie (and that's saying something) and the most darkly engrossing post apocalyptic movie I keep going back to.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets 2017 - ugh/10 - This is the one I'd love to leave off the list, but in the interest of a complete log, here it is. This was The Fifth Element all over again (and coming from me this is not a compliment.) Bad writing, bad acting, and revolting visuals. Why can't we just have another Léon or Nikita? What happened to you Luc Besson? You used to be cool

Hitler's Bodyguard TV docuseries 2008 - 7/10 - I finished this up this week, and was really great. Stuff mostly not covered by other docs, but I can't in good conscience give something Nazi-centric higher than a 7

Mute 2018 - 9/10 - This was the real gem of my week. This movie exists in the same universe as Moon from 2009, but is not a sequel. I recommend watching Moon first, not just because it's great, but so you don't spoil yourself on the few crossover elements. I loved this movie. Alexander Skarsgård shines as our protagonist, and the director Duncan Jones (David Bowie's son) fleshes out a beautiful Blade Runner-like vision of future Berlin. Paul Rudd is also amazing and like I've never seen him. Watch this one!

reply

Agree with you on Children of Men. Mute is getting panned, I am surprised you liked it.

reply

Ah, someone is still awake... 🙂

reply

Or not...😴🛌💤

reply

Panned means nothing to me, I loved it. I only know what I like and don't really care what others think. I had one minor qualm with a bit of the ending but it was the most satisfying thing I watched last week.

reply

I should amend my previous statement. I don't care what professional critics think; I highly value personal reviews by people I know or MC users.

reply

Loved City of Men

I should look around for the Hitler one...love WW II stuff

Mute ive only just noticed on NetFlix (damn good cast!)
I will watch tonight and report back at some point👍

reply

Children of Men, City of Men I can't vouch for. I think that's sequel to City of God, which I have seen and like

reply

Oops lol!
I mix these titles up all the time😂

I meant Children...brain spasm!

reply

I figured, I just got called a humorless dbag elsewhere and I'm kind of glad to be able to interact with you. I like you Shogie

reply

Sorry to hear that
These things blow over here eventually...ive gotten knicked up a bunch! Buddies with most of them now

Hang in there buddy
I like you too!

Love season 3 2018 - 9/10 - I finally really connected with this netflix show. Took me long enough, but I love Love

WWII in Color 2008 - 7/10- Some retread with other docs, and I haven't finished it yet but good

Star Trek III: Search for Spock with commentary 1984 - 7/10 - seen many times before but first time listening to this commentary which featured Ronald D Moore and...some other guy, was good, but Nimoy commentary is better.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home with commentary 1986 - 6/10 - another fan commentary with people who worked on later trek, never been my favorite movie but was good auxiliary info.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn 1982 - 10/10 - Needs no review, flawless film

Love seasons 1 and 2 - Rewatched first 2 seasons and love them more now that I'm into it

Moon 2009 - 10/10 - Amazing debut by Duncan Jones, was a rewatch prompted by having loved Mute so much. This movie shows what Sam Rockwell can really do and he is jaw droppingly good. Amazing visuals, music, writing, everything.

The Goldbergs - 5/10 - I'm getting sick of this show. I used to love it but now it seems like every episode is about coach Mellor, and this one was all coach Mellor

Flash Gordon 1980 - 6/10 - when you're in the right mood and drunk, like I was, it's so good

Damien the Omen II 1978 - 7/10 - Always been my favorite, the antichrist's coming of age

Punisher 1989 - 7/10 - Dolph Lundgren is my favorite Punisher. First time I really watched the whole thing and I was very pleased, especially given how much people trash it.

BBC Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe 1988 7/10 - a favorite from my childhood, still holds up, dark fantasy and not overly preachy

Most Likely to Die 2015 - 6/10 - Slasher I watched on Netflix, liked it but pretty cookie cutter, still very enjoyable watch

I think that's all, phew that was a lot

reply

Aight, here we go:

Romeo + Juliet: Agreed, well said. 7.5-8/10

Children of men: Saw it for the first time last year. I expected a violent action movie. I got a frickin masterpiece. 9/10

Moon: Need to rewatch but 7/10 for now.

Love S1: 7/10
S2: 7/10
S3: 8/10

reply

It WAS a lot but you got it done!
Big posts are daunting...Stone's is my biggest response every week and i fret over it lol

WWII in color i loved
Amazing what the Allies accomplished against such brutal aggression
Frankly, we here in The 'States are damned fools for not
maintaining our industries and production...thats the stuff that wins wars

Flash Gordan was awesome
Great soundtrack, corny as can be, very retro SFX/Art Decor look going on
Loved it

Lundgren was my least favorite Punisher but ok
Bernthal for the win imo

Wrath of Khan is THE BEST of all the Treks but im not huge on Star Trek
Some of the series is really good

Omen II was a good horror show...the first was best i thought

reply

I loved the Netflix Punisher. He made the second season of Daredevil even better than the first, and his own show blew me away just as much. There's just somethimg about 80s stuff that does me right. It's my origin I guess. I was born in that decade and I grew up watching 80s and early 90s stuff all the time. Just being from that time period increases my enjoyment of many things, and I feel like it was the role Lundgren was meant for. I like Drago, I like He-man, but Dolph as the Punisher was so satisfying in an inexplicable way.

reply

Yup i love the 80's stuff too
I get you

I watched Mute on your suggestion this evening
I thought it was pretty good
One hell of a fine cast and very entertaining!
Thx

reply

I only had one slight criticism of the ending, but I'm not one of those guys who loves 99 percent of a movie and then decides to trash it because I didn't get absolutely everything I wanted out of it.

reply

A busy work week for me. Just one to add

Shetland (2018) Season 4 - Love this series and the beautifully rugged landscape of Scotland. This season revolves around the release of a man from prison after 23 years for murder. Another murder is committed soon after his release and he is a suspect in this new murder. Love these UK crime dramas. A solid 8/10.

reply

I've had my eye on this one, I think I'll start it this week. It keeps getting recommended to me by Netflix because of my love of Broadchurch.

reply

Cheers mate!

reply

Nothing really this week. I am waiting to re watch the Godfather films so I will rate them again once i sit down with them. Transformers is 5/10 and that was being generous, it simply not a very good film. I am not sure if I will check out Game Over, Man, the trailers havn't grabbed me.

reply

I loved The Godfather Part III and would rate it 10/10. I haven't seen Transformers: The Last Knight yet but will probably see it eventually. I hadn't even heard of Game Over, Man before and likely won;'t watch it. My ratings of what I watched:

Love, Simon (2018) 8/10
Call Me by Your Name (2017) 7/10
Liste noire (1995) 5/10
Slightly French (1949) 6/10
Three for the Show (1955) 7/10
The Florida Project (2017) 8/10

reply

None of yours for me this week Allaby

reply

I feel your Call Me by your name ranking, I loved the movie, but it didn't really live up to the hype it created.

reply

Endless Love (2014) ... A teen romance movie about a romantic boy with violent tendances who believes that love is the most important thing and pursues a girl from a wealthy family in the summer before she goes to university... Alex Pettyfer plays the sensitive boy bruiser... It's a remake. They didn't pursue the darkness of the themes as much one would think... Aparently the book this is based on has him as far more obsessive...

30 Days of Night (2008) ... Vampire slasher horror in the Alaskan snow led by Josh Hartnett... Pretty average movie, with one or two cool kills.

wait... adding a couple more...

Das Boot (1981) ... Great submarine war movie... It's just so good. Don't let the long runtime put you off. Must watch.

Anatomy of A Murder (1959) ... Morally ambigious courtroom drama...

reply

On this first week of spring I watched mostly the SNOW falling!

I've seen The Godfather III but all I really remember from it was how bad I though Sophia Coppola was and something happening on some stairs.

I needed some pick-me-up this week, so I went to the well of "movies that make Mina feel really happy".

The Full Monty (1997)
Fellas, if you ever find yourselves unemployed, stripping might be the way to go. You will have to watch Flashdance (just ignore Jennifer Beals' welding skills) and show ya privates though. I love this film so much. It's hilarious for one thing. It's also a very touching story of men just dealing with what life's thrown at them. And who doesn't like some Hot Chocolate? Performances and soundtrack are great. Even the sappy moments are done in a way that doesn't make me roll my eyes. A real feel-good movie this one.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)
"Is it true when you were born the doctor turned around and slapped your mother?"
Three drag queens embark on a journey through the Australian bush (the only one they care to go close to *wink wink* *nudge nudge*) filled with misadventure, bigotry and sequins. And also some nice people along the way. I love this film so much. It's hilarious for one thing. It's also a very touching story of men (and a trans woman) just dealing with what life's thrown at them. The roles are played to perfection, the costumes are amazing and the musical performances are just the best. And can we talk about how gorgeous Guy Pearce is in this film, in and out of drag! It's also one of the most quotable movies I've ever seen.

Some French Movie I Saw Half of on TV and Didn't Catch the Title (year)
Military cadets do military things, and then they run off into a forest that burns down at the end. I didn't know what this movie was, so I assumed it was the Apocalypse happening amidst a romantic drama... It wasn't that bad though, interesting enough to make me stop flipping through the channels.

reply

I saw The Full monty back in the 90's. I remember it being fun but I was young and looking for cheap laughs.

I will try to find it to see how it holds up.

Thanks for dropping by my beautiful Mina. ;)

(Btw, Annihilation is NOT on CAnadian NEtflix :()

reply

I don't think the laughs in The Full Monty are cheap, I get what you mean though. IMO it still holds up.

Is Annihilation in cinemas in Canada, like it is in the US? They did a weird distribution for that one... Or maybe someone out there thinks Canadians don't deserve to see Annihilation, even on streaming!

reply

I looked up and it'S nowhere to be seen.

reply

One hit and two misses for me this week.

Bad Day at Black Rock (1955) – Good suspense in this one. John Macreedy (Spencer Tracy) steps off the train in the small, isolated, dusty, desert town of Black Rock. Since the train hasn’t stopped there in four years, his arrival is met with immediate suspicion. The residents do their best to run him out of town before he discovers their secret. Also stars Robert Ryan, Walter Brennan, Lee Marvin, Anne Francis, Dean Jagger, and Ernest Borgnine. 7.5/10

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – This series is very highly rated, but I don't know why. I guess I just don't 'get' the humor. I made it through two episodes before shutting it down. I didn’t find it funny at all; 2 episodes, 0 laughs, not even a chuckle. And no, I won’t be revisiting this one. 1/10

Slumdog Millionaire – Maybe I shouldn’t put this on my list because I didn’t watch the whole movie. In fact, I got about 20-25 minutes into it and turned it off. I couldn’t take the cruelty and violence. Yes, I know it has an uplifting ending, but still… I may try again at another time, so I’m not rating it this week.

reply

Glen! My man! C'mon!

It'S always Sunny: MAybe you have to ''get'' it but hear this. My fiend and his girlfirned hyped me up for this show and when they finally showed me 2 episodes I had the same reaction as you. I did not watch it before a full year later when I watched it again by myself but then, I watched the first two seasons. I now saw the whole serie and am an avid fan.

Just saying.

Oh and Slumdog: LOVE that movie. It'S beautiful bro! 9/10

Peace

reply

No offense taken, but in case you don't know, it's 'my lady.' 😉 I know, I know. My fault for choosing a confusing name, but think Glenn Close... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I respect your opinion, however mine is not changing on sunny Philadelphia.

🤠

reply

Im always surprised at the amount of females here. You'd think that movies and forums were more of a male thing. Movie-forums twice as much. Sorry if that's sexist...

reply

I have no interest in Slumdog millionaire. I never understood all the attention it got a few years back.

reply

Movies:

-Under Siege (1992)
Probably the only decent Seagal movie. He was pretty boring, but Jones and Busey were entertaining.

-Under Siege 2 (1995)
Sorry, too ridiculous and the villains were not at all interesting.

TV Shows:

-The X-files - "My Struggle IV"
Well, that was pretty lame. This whole season was rather disappointing and tried too hard to be like other shows, this time The Gifted or some other superhero show. And I simply do not care for the whole Scully/Mulder romance.😖 Not sure if there will be another season, but I won't be watching any longer.

-Midsomer Murders - "Strangler's Wood" and "Beyond the Grave"

-The Flying Doctors - "Square Pegs"
A better episode than last time.

-Man about the House - "Right Said George"

-The Lucy Show - "Lucy and the Ring-a-Ding Ring"
Better than the last episode.

-Hotel - marathon

-Unsolved Mysteries - marathon

-Buffy The Vampire Slayer - "Never Kill a Boy on the First Date" and "The Pack"

reply

Is unsolved mysteries the buzzfeed one? I've been trying to find other derivatives of case documentaries, none really seemed too interesting.

reply

I have no idea what the Buzzfeed one is. I'm talking about the classic show from the 80s and 90s presented by Robert Stack.

reply

Under Siege is, indeed, my fav Seagal movie. 7/10
