Ever walked out?

I've never walked out of a movie in the theater, but I have come close. When I saw the Walden media/Disney version of Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, I detested it beyond words and had to stop myself from walking out. I loved the BBC Narnia productions so much for their faithfulness to the source material and the new version had none of the subtlety or style that I loved. Disney's version was this gross action and bad cgi fest that got worse and worse as they made more films, stories that had already been flawlessly adapted.

"The Lion in Winter." I got a hair in ass to see this at premiere for some damn reason. My parents tried to talk me out of it, sort of, but, my dad drove me up and dropped me off with the promise to be back in 2 1/2 hours. I walked out after the 1/2 hour, but, was too stubborn to call my parents to pick me up early. I sat on that curb for two hours.

"How was it, Cubby?" - dad
"Oh, it was great, dad." - me

Years later I told my mom what had really happened and she told me they were actually happy. They spent that 2 hours having lots of "fun."

reply

LOL!
'Fun' time😂

reply

The 'fun' time thing got me too. Weird they needed to wait until the kid gets himself out of the house instead of sending him away for whatever reason

reply

My dad & mom, my dad especially enjoyed his onions. They took their quickies when no other option was available, but, they liked to take their time, do it right. I'm a chip off that old block.

reply

Im married a long time, have two little pests of my own and the otherwise lovely neighbors have no qualms about 'popping in...'

'Fun Time' is at a premium lol!

reply

I love that film however if I had seen at at the age you saw it I'm sure I would have been bored out of my mind!

reply

I love this!
Lots and lots of fun to be had in 2 hours!

I never got into the Disney Narnia movies either. Watching the first one nearly put me to sleep. I mean no offense. Mythical fantasies fail to keep my interest. For what it's worth, it made a very good Christian mythology epic without being directly religious, which is quite hard to do.

No, but I thought about it when I went to the theater to watch the 'Angry Birds Movie' and 'Norm of the North' - Don't judge me! I went with a younger relative each time and had to endure it.

P.S.
I liked Norm of the North more out of the two.

reply

No offense taken, that Wardrobe is totally sleep inducing. It shouldn't be, because as I said the BBC version has way less action, but is beyond gripping. I'm not even a Christian, or a theist for that matter, I just love me some BBC narnia. Can't say I've seen Angry Birds movie or Norm of the north.

reply

Unless you are really, really young at heart and enjoy the corniest of tired jokes, avoid 'Norm' and 'Angry Birds.' There's next to no redeeming value for adults in the latter, which I cringed a lot at.

Do you think a fantasy-nonstarter person such as myself can enjoy BBC Narnia? There are some fantasies I do like, The Beastmaster, for instance.

reply

Yes BBC Narnia is exactly what you are looking for, it's a very mysterious dark fantasy. Wardrobe and Silver Chair are the best. Like I said I'm not a Christian and I like them.

reply

I plan to check it out when I can, my watch list is ever growing - and never ending, haha! There's a young adult fantasy series called 'The Shannara Chronicles' in which a team of people from different backgrounds; druids, humans, elves, etc. must confront the impact their powers hold on their societies in order to combat figurative and literal fears. You might like it. It has a lot of over-arching character storylines and a good mix of subtle humor thrown in for good measure too.

reply

no never. haven't been to a theater in six years now.

reply

I've gone very sparingly over the last ten years. This past year maybe 2 times. The last movie I went to the cinema for was Phantom Thread, and I loved it.

reply

Taken 2 was the last movie I have seen in the theater which was 2012. I am happy with my 65 inch Samsung

reply

My first loner...The one I stayed for all the way:::"The St. Valentines Day Massacre" '67. I wasn't of age, but, I went anyway.

"They won't let you in, Cubby. And I'm not going to pay for a ticket just to get you in. Mom would take a fit."

"Fine. Just wait here for two minutes to see if I clear the ticket booth & the usher." - me

"Fine, gd it! If your mother finds o..." dad

I slid my $1.50/adult price thru the slot in the ticket booth. Exact change. And just looked left at the upcoming movie posters. I could feel the girl's eyes on me, but, I didn't change view point. She triggered the mechanism (I heard it) and slid that ducat thru the opening. Next was the usher. I just looked past him to the darkened theater and the seat waiting for me. He ripped that ticket in half, gave me my half. "Enjoy the show, sir."

And by God I did.

"Did mom find out?" me

"Be quiet, Cubby.." - dad

reply

Wow, you were bad to the bone! Sometimes you wonder how it worked out.

reply

I nearly walked out on 'Sphere'
I had read the Crichton novel and thought it was just ok...certainly not his best
The film had a fine cast so i went to the theater but damn was i bored
I hung in there though because it was really hot outside and the AC was pumping the coolness...i was young and had no better place to be

reply

I kind if liked it but I never read the book. It's pretty boring, I admit, but I enjoy it.

reply

Hell of a cast for sure!

Maybe ill give it another go someday...there are just SO many things i need to watch

reply

I wanted to walk out of that "Thread" movie with D.D. Lewis but I was with people.

reply

I loved it

reply

The kicker? I had to buy tickets for the entire party! 6-SIX-6 people.

I coulda cried.

reply

It's a bummer having to pay when you're not into the movie. Make those freeloaders pay next time!

reply

No, it cost too much money to be walking out. Also I hate to leave things unfinished even if I didn't like it.

reply

For sure, money is too scarce to be bailing, but I have come very close a couple times. I'm also with you on not leaving things unfinished, it just feels wrong.

I don't feel like you can have any idea of what a movie will be after only 30 minutes. That's barely scratching the surface and not really giving it a chance. I've had friends who work at theaters and they cringe at people who do this, because it's always the same cheap people walking out of every movie they see at like the 29 minute mark. I can't condone it, but I do understand why some movies might make you want to. I just don't feel it's giving it much chance.

Sorry if that came across as overly aggressive, I'm just a major dick sometimes. Still love that username

I use the Movie Pass. So for $9.99/mo I can see a movie a day(no I'm not pimping for MP). As a result, I have walked out of films that featured characters I couldn't care less about and I didn't feel guilty about the $.

reply

Their growth has skyrocketed since they first began pricing at 9.99 per month and they just dropped their price to 6.95 per month. I'm fascinated by their business model.

reply

I swear, coming from a guy who loves le cinema it seems too good to be true. After reading a ton of negative comments I waited about a month before committing. However, knock wood, I have used it about 15 times over the last two months without an issue. It makes it more affordable to see a film I might have skipped.

From what I have read, the Movie Pass is a loss leader. The company sells the data if obtains from each respective. That's Greek to me but this card is the BEST money I ever spent/saved!!

To get the $6.95 "monthly" fee you actually have to pay 1 year at a time. Still a steal.

reply

Very nice, I’m glad it’s working out for you. I wonder if the “pay upfront” thing helps or hurts them. Seems to me that the allure of 6.95 per month works much better if you don’t force people ask questions like “How often will I really use this over the next year?”

reply

No, I'll just nap instead.
