What did you watch on this final winter week? (11/03-17/03)

Hey guys, here I am, faithful to the post.

My week:

The Gift (2015 Netflix): This movie offers a good but ballsy idea that was executed very well with a talented cast. The whole thing reminded me of those intense Asian thrillers. I found it to be a slow burn with a finish that won’t leave you indifferent. Formulaic but entertaining. 7/10

Batman V Superman (2016 Netflix): Not even 10 minutes in, I saw Ben Affleck save a little girl from a crumbling building, and at the very last second on top of that. I puked a little in my mouth. But I stuck with the film because, you know, it’s Batman VS Superman and it’s my man Zack Snyder. 20 minutes after, I realised it was literal bullshit and no dramatic violin could save this mess. When Bruce Wayne woke up from a nightmare involving computer generated imagery, mine was just starting. Eisenberg also made some noise with his mouth…I lost interest and started doing other stuff. It’s actually still playing in the background as I write this. Right now a creature appeared straight out from Middle-Earth. Pretty rad. 4/10

When we first met (2018 Netflix): Yeeah… killed that one too. Barely 30 minutes in. And that’s coming from a Workaholics fan. 2/10

Ferris Bueller’s day off (Bluray 1986): I had three teen comedies of the 80’s I needed to watch. Fast times at Ridgemont High, which I loved and rated a 8. This one here, which I tough was good but not outstanding, at least it went by very quick and I rate it a 7/10. Next one I aim is The Breakfast Club.

Coût de chance (2014 TV): This French DTV movie was perfect for a lazy afternoon. It even made for a great debate between me and my wife afterward. Good acting, good story, cheap filming. 6.5/10

Love Season 3 (2018 Netflix): ‘’ A program that follows a couple who must navigate the exhilarations and humiliations of intimacy, commitment and other things they were hoping to avoid.’’ This was my favorite season yet, very good stuff. Strong start, strong finish and a consistent middle. Binged it like a boss. 8/10

Movies:

-Murder by Numbers (2002)
I guess it was okay, but I agree with a critic who called it a CW version of Rope. I don't know what it is with thrillers made after the 90s, but they seem to lack suspense. And Sandra Bullocks' character being completely messed up was also a cliché. The worst part was the ridiculous ending which featured some hideous CGI.

-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)
Horrible mess. Lots of miscasts and dumb humour. I prefer the cartoon Turtles I grew up with.

TV Shows:

-The X-files - "Nothing Lasts Forever"
Absolutely horrible. The worst X-files episode I've ever seen. Seemed more like American Horror Story. I won't continue watching after this season.

-Midsomer Murders - "Death in Disguise" and "Death's Shadows"
Still going strong. Funny to see Stephen Moyer in an early role.

-The Flying Doctors - "Is Nothing Sacred"
Another episode I didn't like that much. Never liked Dr. Tom acting sanctimonious. But like I said, season 1 is not my favourite either.

-Man about the House - "The Last Picture Show"
First episode of season 5. Still funny.

-The Lucy Show - "Lucy the Bean Queen"
Somewhat better than the George Burns episode, because there was more plot. But I don't think this show is for me. It seems more like a silly sketch show than a real sitcom.

-Step by Step - marathon
The last few episodes of the last season. They were awful! I guess I'm glad it's over now.

-Hotel - marathon
Still going to keep watching, this show is hilariously cheesy!

-Unsolved Mysteries - marathon

-Buffy The Vampire Slayer - "Witch" and "Teacher's pet"
I'm loving this, despite it being in German. Season 1 is really my favourite season together with 2.

- The High Chaparral - "The Arrangement"
Westerns have never been my thing. Not sure if it's better than Bonanza. It does seem more realistic.

TMNT: You are 100% right about the ones from our childhood but I didn't think it was too bad.

Hey, Stone. I haven't seen any of yours. For me:

The Alienist ( 2018)--- Episode #8 of a ten part series that will culminate this month. This is the first television series I've followed in quite awhile but I must admit, it required some discipline at times. It's a lavishly produced time capsule of NYC in the late 19th century involving the hunt for a horrific serial killer and employs early forensics and criminal profiling. I find it to be a visually impressive, atmospheric, engaging whodunit. 8/10

Capote ( 2005 )---This is essentially the story of how Truman Capote's literary masterpiece, In Cold Blood, came to be. Another period piece which very accurately gives us the look and feel of the late 50s and early 60s. Its tone is understandably often melancholy and grim. Philip Seymour Hoffman's performance is uncanny in how he nails down Capote's speech, mannerisms and flamboyance. 8/10

In the Heat of the Night ( 1967 )---This is just a damn good move ! It features Sidney Poitier in probably one his most iconic roles, Detective Virgil Tibbs. There's non-stop tension in the film and along with Hollywood heavyweight Rod Steiger as his co-star, frequent scenes of a highly charged, dynamic interplay between the two characters. It's capped off with a great soundtrack in which Quincy Jones and Ray Charles collaborate. 8/10

I forgot to mention :

The Falcon and the Snowman (1985 ) ---This movie is based on the true story of the brilliant son of a retired FBI agent selling highly classified information to the Soviets. It kept me interested enough to see it to its conclusion. Timothy Hutton was adequate as the protagonist but Sean Penn as his partner in crime was often annoying and downright obnoxious, as if he was trying to steal the scenes. 6/10

Capote I got on DVD a while back. Still need to see it.

Peter Pan (2003) (re-watch) - 8/10

Hugely underrated flick. PJ Hogan's Peter Pan manages to capture all the magic and wonder of the 1953 Disney version as well as the psychological depth of its source novel. Like Steven Spielberg's Hook, it tries to get into its title character's psyche a bit and ask "What does it mean to never grow up?" but pushes it further to the forefront and without letting the usual trappings of a kids movie weigh it down. Jeremy Sumpter was also severely snubbed of an Oscar nod in this film.

Dracula's Daughter (1936) - 5/10

This film is a bit of a mess. The general plot and ideas are very good, but its execution leaves a lot to be desired. I love the story of Dracula having a daughter who wants to reject her family curse and be rid of her vampirism, but the problem here is that we don't spend enough time with her, as the film spends a lot of with this other jackass named Jeffrey, played by Otto Kruger, who is honestly a boring, stiff character. There's also a needless of wacky humor thrown in and even kind of a romance with Jeffrey and his assistant. All this just robs the film of any weight and gravitas it could have had. Thankfully though, Gloria Holden gives a truly fantastic performance as the Count's daughter. She's mysterious, conflicted, seductive, entrancing, lustful, yet sympathetic all at once. I just wish we saw more of her. Edward Van Sloan also returns and puts another sharp turn on Van Helsing. So yeah, it's not great, but still worth a watch, if mainly for Gloria and Edward.

The Disaster Artist (2017) - 6/10

This film was a bit of a let down for me. As someone who's read and loved the book it was based on, Franco's film feels very much like a dumbed down, simplified version of the story. The film more or less, sans the darker side of Tommy and Greg's relationship and goes for more of a typical buddy-comedy route. This might have worked if the film was a bit more heightened dramatically and if the fun, upbeat tone it had at the start was kept consistent throughout. Instead, the writers chooses to save all of Tommy's dickishness for the second half, which makes for a very awkward film that seems tonally confused with itself. It doesn't quite explore the complex dynamics of Greg and Tommy's real-life relationship, nor does it embellish itself enough to be a heart-warming underdog story either. It falls right in the middle and doesn't deliver on either end of the spectrum. Dave Franco also doesn't do much for me in the role of Greg, though that may have more to do with how he's written. He's portrayed as this one-note, overly shy, overly timid guy, and I just never bought him as a real person. How someone like him could ever get into the field of acting is way beyond me.

What does work about the film though, is Tommy Wiseau. While the film does soften him up quite a bit, a lot of Tommy's real-life character traits are still intact. Franco does a brilliant job conveying Wiseau's naivety, eccentricities, his sheer lack of inhibition, and even a bit of his dark, jealous side as well. The film never comes to a whole all that well but it is consistently entertaining. There are many scenes that are straight up laugh out loud hilarious, and even a few dramatic beats that work really well. I genuinely felt for Tommy at his lowest lows. So in the end, I'd still give it a mild recommendation, but more for The Room fans, as opposed to general movie fans.

The Cabin in the Woods (2012) - 6/10

I actually liked this one. At least, while I'm watching, that is. The thing is, while I love how the film cleverly makes fun of so many overused horror movie tropes, I feel like it could have been a lot cleverer. For me, it just relies far too much on plot contrivances and things not being properly explained, to the point where it dilutes a lot of the satire. Take for instance, the group splitting up. It's an overused trope in the genre, an excuse to show them all getting picked off one by one when in reality, no one with an IQ higher than room temperature would ever do such a thing. It was great that they chose to address it, but how they handle it with the technicians underground merely pumping some sort of magic gas to make Thor change his mind just feels really lazy. The same goes for a lot of the film, where Whedon and Goddard seem to just not care about explaining things well. I get that it's meant to be satire, but wouldn't it have been much cleverer had if the plot actually made sense? I usually don't like to complain about plot holes, as I feel a film's artistic/entertainment value is more important but here, it dilutes the experience a bit. Still though, the film is overall a fun ride, and I did enjoy watching it, if not thinking about it. So yeah, another mild recommendation from me, I guess.

I should start keeping a log so I can better respond to theses posts. The ones that stand out were Room 2015, Manchester by the Sea, Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Cyborg, JCVD, Total Recall, and a show I was streaming over Netflix "Hitler's Bodyguard." The Looming Tower and The Path on Hulu, The Real O'Neills, and Happy Endings.

You watch some good stuff, you definitely should keep a log with a brief comment and maybe a rating too.

reply

Yeah log is being started just for you Stoney

I like it!

Been a while since I stopped ranking and rating, since there's so damn much I've seen, but I'll give it a go with some of my 1st time watches.

Room 2015 - 10/10, I am a tough grader, or I was when I graded, this was the most emotionally gripping movie I've seen in a long time. Top notch performance by Brie Larson and everyone else was also great. I liked how claustrophobic it felt in the beginning and then opened up and up and sends you into shock along with the characters.

Manchester by the Sea 2016 - 7/10, was really good, I liked seeing Casey Affleck in a lead role, which I can't remember seeing since Gone Baby Gone. He was great but it was very understated, not sure if it was oscar worthy but very good. Kenneth Lonergan directed one of my favorites "You Can Count on Me" and this reminded me of that, great performances all around, especially by the young cast.

JCVD - 7/10, Very funny and touching at times, I loved seeing Jean Claude stretch his wings a bit, but also delivered with what he does best. I was watching a lot of his films recently and this was recommended by a fellow MCer, I think twinA.

The rest I've either seen before or are series I'm in process of watching. I'll do better this week of keeping track, rating, and reviewing.

Awesome.

Room: Good for one watch but kind of regreted buying it. 7/10

JCVD: Agreed. 7/10

Konnichiwa, SK!

I don't think I ever finished watching The Gift (shocking, I know). Not that I though it was bad, I just... stopped. lol

"I realised it was literal bullshit". That's every Zack Snyder film. Especially that piece of flaming dogshit Sucker Punch. *sorry, not sorry* I haven't seen BvS, but have you noticed that the title is just one letter removed away from BS? (Love your review BTW!)

Ferris Bueller... seen it, don't remember much about it.

Since I posted what I watched _this_ week on _last_ weeks thread, I'll post what I watched _last_ week on _this_ week's thread. Welcome to my world!

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)
Four high school kids are given detention for plot reasons and are sucked into the crazy, messed up, shook up world of Jumanji. There they are given avatars to represent a personal journey they must each undertake. The "scared of everything" guy finds bravery and such. The other guy I don't remember what he learns... To carry a bag? The popular girl learns that she also has a brain. The shy girl undergoes the deepest change of them all, that of finding her inner hot girl *rolls eyes*. Anyway, they have to find a thing and put it in another thing and beat the game. They do that, and learn their lessons along the way. It does what it says on the tin. It's a fun action-adventure movie, had some funny bits. Jack Black is having a good time playing a teen girl. I had fun watching this one. Did I mention fun? lol

I'm waiting for your review of Annihilation next week :P
