What did you watch on this final winter week? (11/03-17/03)

Hey guys, here I am, faithful to the post.

My week:

The Gift (2015 Netflix): This movie offers a good but ballsy idea that was executed very well with a talented cast. The whole thing reminded me of those intense Asian thrillers. I found it to be a slow burn with a finish that won’t leave you indifferent. Formulaic but entertaining. 7/10

Batman V Superman (2016 Netflix): Not even 10 minutes in, I saw Ben Affleck save a little girl from a crumbling building, and at the very last second on top of that. I puked a little in my mouth. But I stuck with the film because, you know, it’s Batman VS Superman and it’s my man Zack Snyder. 20 minutes after, I realised it was literal bullshit and no dramatic violin could save this mess. When Bruce Wayne woke up from a nightmare involving computer generated imagery, mine was just starting. Eisenberg also made some noise with his mouth…I lost interest and started doing other stuff. It’s actually still playing in the background as I write this. Right now a creature appeared straight out from Middle-Earth. Pretty rad. 4/10

When we first met (2018 Netflix): Yeeah… killed that one too. Barely 30 minutes in. And that’s coming from a Workaholics fan. 2/10

Ferris Bueller’s day off (Bluray 1986): I had three teen comedies of the 80’s I needed to watch. Fast times at Ridgemont High, which I loved and rated a 8. This one here, which I tough was good but not outstanding, at least it went by very quick and I rate it a 7/10. Next one I aim is The Breakfast Club.

Coût de chance (2014 TV): This French DTV movie was perfect for a lazy afternoon. It even made for a great debate between me and my wife afterward. Good acting, good story, cheap filming. 6.5/10

Love Season 3 (2018 Netflix): ‘’ A program that follows a couple who must navigate the exhilarations and humiliations of intimacy, commitment and other things they were hoping to avoid.’’ This was my favorite season yet, very good stuff. Strong start, strong finish and a consistent middle. Binged it like a boss. 8/10

I plan on checking out The Gift, BvS is on the list but I just cant seem to get the desire to watch it. My wife picked out When We First Met and I found it tolerable for what it was so it was a 5/10 for me. Ferris Bueller's Day off is an 80s classic so 8/10. I haven't seen the rest.

Lawless Kingdom "The Four 2" (2013 Tubi TV): "Four detectives, each with supernatural powers, dedicate their unique and special skills to solving crimes and apprehending powerful criminals." Stars: Chao Deng, Yifei Liu, Anthony Chau-Sang Wong, Collin Chou 6/10

Kingdom of Blood "The Four 3" (2014 Amazon Prime): "Emotionless has left Six Doors, as has Cold Blood, who has decided to investigate the death of Lord Bu on his own. The departure of two of the four constables has effectively left Six Doors defunct. At this time, trouble begins to brew in the Imperial Palace as Emperor Huizong plans to travel incognito to the outside world. When he is almost assassinated and subsequently disappears, Cold Blood, Emotionless, Iron Hands and Life Snatcher must band together once again under Master Zhuge to save the empire from a massive conspiracy." Stars: Chao Deng, Yifei Liu, Collin Chou, Ronald Cheng 6/10

Wind River (2017 Netflix): "A veteran tracker with the Fish and Wildlife Service helps to investigate the murder of a young Native American woman, and uses the case as a means of seeking redemption for an earlier act of irresponsibility which ended in tragedy." Stars: Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Graham Greene 8/10

November Criminals (2017 Amazon Prime): "After his friend is murdered, a Washington, D.C. teenager undertakes his own investigation of the crime." Stars: Ansel Elgort, Chloë Grace Moretz 5/10

Heart of a Dragon (1985 Amazon Prime): "Story of a cop who forsakes his dreams of sailing around the world so that he can care for his mentally disabled brother." Stars: Jackie Chan, Sammo Kam-Bo Hung, Emily Chu 6/10

My Friend Dahmer (2017) - A small independent covering the last weeks of high school in 1978 of serial killer Jeffery Dahmer and his friends. One of those friends John Backderf is a writer and the movie is based on his graphic novel. A good look at Dahmer's home life and Anne Heche is especially good as his mentally unstable mother. You see Dahmer's obsessions with roadkill and animal abuse. You also get the impression that Backderf may have some guilt in his treatment of Dahmer. A great scene at the end when Backderf is left alone with Dahmer at his house. 7/10

The Hanging Tree (1959) - Gary Cooper who plays a doctor who saves the life of a young criminal in a Montana gold town. Karl Malden plays the heavy and Maria Schell plays the way too young love interest of Cooper. Cooper was getting too old for fight scenes. Decent enough. 7/10

Kansas City Confidential (1952) - An ex-con trying to go straight is framed for a million dollar armored car robbery and must go to Mexico in order to unmask the real culprits. Very good story line for this film noir which I had never seen before.
7.5/10

Nightmare Alley (1947) - Tyrone Power plays Stanton Carlisle, a mentalist, whose lies and deceit prove to be his downfall. Power was known as a pretty boy but he shows some acting chops in this classic film noir. I enjoyed this all around with some interesting characters especially the deceiving psychologist. 8/10

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane (1962) - Bette Davis plays a former child star who torments her paraplegic sister (Joan Crawford) in their decaying Hollywood mansion. Davis can sure play crazy and was nominated for Best Actress. The movie has mystery, intrigue, terror and violence. There are some faults but overall a classic. 8/10

Annihilation (2018) - A group of all female scientists enter into an environmental disaster zone called The Shimmer. I enjoyed this sci-fi which is reminiscent of the Invasion of the Body Snatchers in places. There are unanswered questions and you will question some of the decisions made. 7/10

Lots of people watched Annihilation this week. I'll have to get to it too.

reply

I completely agree on BvS. Terrible film all around and it's probably the #1 reason Justice League did so poorly at the box office. JL wasn't great either, but it was a lot better than this one.

Hi Stone!

The Salvation: Mads Mikkelson western...pretty standard revenge story but very good and violent
Damn i like this Mads guy!!
The lovely Eva Green was sort of wasted in her role but good fun overall

#Captured: low budget garbage...a bunch of 30 year old 'teens' are stalked by a weirdo...bad acting, ridiculous story and the violence on women thing is getting a bit tedious in these DTV low budgeters...
Give this crap a skip!

The Walking Dead: im loving Negan and im enjoying the rise of Maggie...the politics, the gore and the occasional scares keep me hooked

Landmine Goes Click: speechless...watched this one because TheMan18 mentioned it
It was unsatisfying in its conclusion and not all of the characters behaved like people really would and the audio went to hell in the final scenes and some of the editing was questionable...but damn...i need to rewatch this nasty movie again!
Very rare for a flick to switch gears midway through and catch you off guard
Kind of shocked and sickened by parts of this one...i honestly cant say if its crap or a modest budget winner

Jessica Jones season 2: just started this last night...im the one superhero fan here lol!
I enjoy these shows and Ritter is ridiculously cute, sexy and mean!
Loving it

reply

Just watched the trailer of LAndmine. It looks like something I could enjoy.

#Captured: Sometimes I wonder how you pick your movies and where you find them.

reply

I have a few problems with Landmine...the script needed to be tighter, i wont spoil anything...i was engaged in the tale but there were some issues...it was nearly a homerun

I have a few streaming services...i watch unknown, low budget movies very often out of respect for the people that make them...i really admire the lunatics that re-mortgage their homes and ruin their social lives in order to film a $10K horror cheapie in the woods with their friends
Ive seen a lot of garbage and found a few gems...long live the indies!
