A movie that only you seem to like?

Billy Bathgate. I'm not even sure people know this movie exists. It's got one hell of a cast -- Nicole Kidman, Steve Buscemi, Bruce Willis, Dustin Hoffman, Steven Hill -- and they're all excellent. Compared to the high-energy likes of "Casino" and "Goodfellas" it's comparatively languid pace might be a major turn-off for some. I, however, find it refreshingly different ... and captivating. It also sports excellent period design and moody cinematography.

reply

Never heard of it but I will watch it based on cast alone.

The movie I like that most people don't is Hard to Kill with Steven Seagal

reply

Seagal's earliest efforts are his best.

"China Seas" with Clark Gable and Jean Harlow. Despite its age it's a breezy, engaging piece of early Hollywood.

Why so much animosity for "The Two Jakes"? Sure, as a sequel to the great "Chinatown," it's rather ordinary. But, if you can curb your expectations, and simply appreciate this follow-up for what it is -- a reasonably well-made period piece with Nicholson, as always, solid-- I see no reason why you should have a painful experience in the slightest.

Senator Trent: You can take that to the bank, Storm.

Mason Storm: Im gonna take YOU to the bank senator...the blood bank!

So awful, so awesome...whats NOT to love right?

reply

What fun it must be writing these moronic scripts.

reply

Remo Williams. Joel Grey's "culturally-insensitive" performance is a hoot.

reply

Oh yes indeed!!!

I LOVE fun and im pretty moronic...i would be sooooo great at writing these things

reply

I would love to write for someone who seems so humorless like Seagal. The fact he doesn't realize he's the butt of the joke makes him ideal for such Grade-A nonsense.

reply

He really is a shady, nasty snot...
It makes his early movies that much more entertaining!

'Ey, who killed Bobby Lupo!?!?!'
*read in the worst Brooklyn accent ever...

Segal is the biggest real life turd of ALL the action stars and man, we have seen some jerkfaces!

reply

Thanks twinA
Segal really is a piece of work!

reply

Out For Justice, what a classic. I lived in that neighborhood for many years, so it’s fun seeing all the local spots on the screen.

reply

Hannibal.

reply

I liked it also, Dazed, have seen it a couple of times. I've definitely seen much worse.

reply

I think one of the problems with Hannibal Rising is that I felt we didn't really need to know Lecter's back story.I'd go so far as to say it was detrimental to the character. It was enough to just know he existed and that there was no name for what he was.

reply

I liked it also

reply

I really like it, not quite so amazing as Lambs, but it has a beauty all its own. I love Scott, and although I was missing Foster a bit, I thought Julianne Moore more than filled her shoes. She made Clarice all her own, I watch this one pretty regularly. Conversely I loathe Hannibal Rising.

reply

I'm so happy to see I'm not alone,it used to get a lot of hate on IMDb.Scott is very gifted and the Florence scenes are amazing.
I actually prefer Julianne Moore by a long stretch if I'm honest and Gary Goldman as Mason Verger was incredible. When I first read Hannibal I didn't think it could be made!
Ah Hannibal Rising! It's not surprising that it was bad since Thomas Harris was basically blackmailed into writing it.
I save my real hatred for Red Dragon.

reply

Florence is my number one desired vacation. I've been a lot of places but I'm going there as soon as I can get the scratch. I loved to see how Hannibal would choose to spend his time if not locked up. What I still can't get over about this movie is that this is the last we hear from H, in the end, he's not recaptured, and he's still out there...

reply

Me too Pete,if I can share a quick story?
My husband knew it was a dream of mine to go there,he never wanted to go on holiday though.Within 6 months of our separation he treated himself to a holiday to Florence, sent me a postcard signed it "H" and when he returned he duplicated all his photos and gave them all to me.
Perhaps the most spiteful thing that's ever happened to me!

Anyway I digress, have you read the book?

reply

No I haven't, I am actually reading Red Dragon right now for the first time, so I'll get there. That husband trip to Florence was cold, I had a hard time reading that. Did you ever get to go yourself? You've got to (civilly) get him back in some way.

reply

I never got to go,maybe one day.My civil way of responding was to admire the photos,I never let him see how much it bothered me!

He died 9 years ago as it happens, alcoholic liver disease.

reply

Sorry to hear that, I guess living on is the best way to move on.

reply

Thank you but you needn't be sorry, addiction has a way of ending love.

It's all water under the bridge now.

I'll tell you something though,I checked out prices earlier and that trip isn't happening anytime soon!

reply

Yeah you don't have to tell me, I will probably go to Florence in 30 years, when I'm 60. When I think of it that way it doesn't seem so unattainable I guess. I can watch Hannibal and Room With a View all I want before then.

reply

You aren't alone. Dazed. I thought that Hannibal was a great movie! Beautiful!
It was also a great adaptation from book to film.

reply

Agreed Margo,as I said to Pete,I really didn't think it could be adapted! But Ridley did a wonderful job.

reply

Karakter. No one seems to know that movie, not even here in the Netherlands!

The Sure Thing

From what I've seen most have never even heard of it.

reply

This rules along with another early John Cusack movie: "Better Off Dead."

reply

Thank you for that.

For a moment I thought I'd made that whole movie up.
I also agree Better Off Dead is ALMOST has good.

reply

How about "One Crazy Summer"? Not as good as either .... but passable.

reply

I'll give you that one.
It is passable for the 80's.

OCS also has one of my guilty pleasure songs.
What Does It Take by Honeymoon Suite.
Still on any of my playlists till this day.

It's so 80's and so bad that it's just plain AWESOME.

reply

Hilarious.

reply

It really is!

They don't make em like that anymore.

reply

You could hide all the winners of "American Idol" behind that hair.

reply

lol!

God I miss the 80's!

reply

Sure Thing is in my Top 25. A sweet, funny, quirky love story.

Rocky V.

The first Rocky was obviously the best and an amazing Oscar winning movie, and it was followed up by an above average sequel, but the next two sequels, and while I enjoyed them because they were Rocky movies, they just really weren't very well made, and just seemed like hour and a half long music videos.

Even so, most people seem to love Rocky III and Rocky IV, and I like them too even though they're cheesy, but it's really cool for everybody to hate Rocky V. I thought it was more well made than III or IV, and I can't watch the street fight at the end without getting really fired up. It's awesome with the exception of Rocky junior saying "Go for it" every two seconds. When Tommy punches Polly in the bar, and Rocky says "You knocked him down, now why don't you try knocking me down now", it makes me want to stand up and cheer!

The point is, I think Rocky V is a lot better than people give it credit for, and it's a more well made movie than Rocky III and IV, with a much better story.

reply

"Rocky V" got back to the more modest roots of the original where The Italian Stallion was only trying to "go the distance."

reply

The fourth kind

reply

I remember liking this a lot and everyone telling me I was crazy. What can I say, we like what we like.

reply

Amen to that😉

reply

Safe directed by Todd Haynes

reply

The only one of his I've seen so far is "Far From Heaven."

reply

I adore Far From Heaven and Velvet Goldmine. I just saw Safe for the first time in the past year and it is probably my favorite of his films now. I absolutely loved it.
