Best Serene Movies?

A movie without conflict.. I'd love to see a movie with a lake in view, nature, quiet, besides some nice, easy talking, not a lot of movement. A few lazy characters. Doesn't even have to be great, I just want to remember how it felt to be outside of the city.

This is tough, considering conflict is what drives most narrative, but one that came to mind is Days of Heaven, not totally conflictless, but it does make you yearn to be in that beautiful landscape.

reply

I saw it, think it's a great story. I did remember it being very slow in some areas.

In that vein I would add The Blue Lagoon.

Good picks Twin

Im due for a Big Fish rewatch...loved that one

The first half of The Truman Show :)

Before Sunrise with Judy Delpy and Ethan Hawke, and its sequels, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight, with the same actors.

reply

These are really good examples that definitely satisfy the prompt

Thank you. What's not to like? Vienna, Paris, and then Greece. Not necessarily conflict-free, but I still think of them as quiet movies.

reply

The conception is great, ideas formed by the director and two stars as they go. Ethan Hawke credits Before Sunrise as the first time anyone gave him a chance as a writer, and he pursues it quite a bit now

I'm hoping for one in 2022 (they seem to make one every 9 yrs!).. It's original.. Now, how about some more originality (I doubt someone will try to make similar pictures, anyway).

Into the Wild
Lost in Translation
Moon

"Into the Wild" is serene? Huh? The dude ends up dying!

"Moon" is serene? Huh? With clones of Sam, the main character, running around all over the place?

Death can be serene - you have to consider the entire movie.

reply

Yes, but death by stupidity, which was what killed the idiot in "Into The Wild", is definitely not serene.
It's pointless, stupid and depressing.

95% of the movie was serene - how about that ??

reply

No sorry I can't agree with you there. The film was mostly me wondering why the hell this guy was so stupid.
For example, why did he give away all his money at the first of the film? That was stupid. What if his grand plan to go into the Alaskan wilderness failed miserably? (Of course it did, spectacularly, he died.) Wouldn't he need his money later?

I always had the feeling something to happen - and not for the good. Then again, I saw Herzog's documentary first.

reply

I did too. Tension is not serene.

On Golden's Pond had some conflict as to family relationships but was pretty peaceful and sweet overall

reply

Fine movie.. Henry Fonda is always pretty, relaxed, even when he's angry, lol.

The Enchanted April, which is also one of my favourite movies. Some witty dialogue with depth, to boot.
