What did you watch this week you Marvelous Moviechatter? (03/04-03/10)

Bla bla bla. bla bla bla. Im drunk.

The Man from Nowhere (Ajeossi 2010 DVD): The fact that it was late affected my viewing of this praised film but I can still say that there are too many characters and too many subplots. I felt at lost at least 16 times. If not, the main characters were actually good but not even close to Leon The Professional. The action scenes were very credible and there is an epic 1 VS All fight scene near the end. I’m disappointed because I had high hopes but it was still good. 6.5-7/10

The Godfather (1972 DVD): ‘’ The aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son.’’ Finally! I finally watched that a movie. T’was a good. I loved the first half and liked the second half a lot. 8.5-9/10

The Godfather: Part II (1974 DVD): I have to say that this one was a struggle for me to get through. The dialogues and the script are good but there’s just so much! Plus the plot was confusing. So I looked at my watch a few times lads. I think the highlight was De Niro. His timeline was the most interesting and the less confusing too. 7.5/10

Haven (2004 DVD): ‘’ Orlando Bloom stars as Shy, a small time expatriate fisherman whose life seems perfect, living in the beautiful Cayman Islands where he plies his trade - that is until his relationship with the beautiful Andrea starts a turf war. ‘’ The first half of this movie is actually pretty good. It’s like a cross between The OC and Traffic. Then it gets confusing and I slowly started losing interest in the story. 5.5/10

The Lion King (1994 DVD): Okay so this is my top childhood movie but now, my 3yrs old boy saw it at the kinder garden and now he wants to watch it every single night. Sometimes even twice in a row but I say no, once is enough. The day after I put Madagascar and 20 mins in he tells me ‘’no, I want the Lion king”. It played all week… So I thought I’d add it to the list. 10/10

Lots o f confusion for me this week. I may be turning dumber dumber.

Blood Simple (1984) - The Coen brothers first movie. A rich but jealous man hires a private investigator to kill his cheating wife and her new man. A very good film noir with good performances from M. Emmet Walsh and Dan Hedaya. Low budget but solid. 8/10

The Lady from Shanghai (1947) - This has all the makings of a great film noir but there is one major problem - The plot does not make sense !! I went back over the threads and tried my best to understand this movie, it doesn't make sense. Plus the George character is a bit too much. Rita Hayworth is hot as a blonde. May have cut a few too many scenes from this movie. 6/10

City of God (2002) - Finally got to see this Brazilian film which follows two boys growing up in a violent neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. Based on true events which makes it disturbing and compelling. 8.5/10

Veronica (2017) - A Spanish film. A teen girl finds herself besieged by an evil supernatural force after she played Ouija with two classmates. Based on a 1991 police report from a Madrid detective. Better than I expected. The teen girl was great. 7/10

Criss Cross (1949) - Another film noir with Burt Lancaster and a very sexy Yvonne De Carlo. Dan Duryea plays the heavy to perfection. An armored truck driver ( Lancaster) and his lovely ex-wife (De Carlo) conspire with a gang to have his own truck robbed on the route. 7.5/10

Blue Velvet (1986) - This David Lynch movie is weird, weird and weird. It has a cult following and a 7.8 rating. There will be a lot of unanswerable questions after watching this. A tough movie to rate as sometimes it almost seems like a black comedy. 7/10.

reply

Blood Simple is one of my favorite Coen movies. Maybe my favorite.

I haven't seen Shangai In awhile but I don't remember it being that bad.

Criss Cross was also good. that rating seems about right.

I do like Blue Velvet. It's Lynch do there will always be unanswerable questions.

reply

Blood Simple you mentioned in the film noir thread
If you go by the thread a lot of people didn't get the plot twists in Shanghai
You are certainly right about Blue Velvet and Lynch

reply

City of God: in my top 20. 10/10

Blood and Blue are far on my watchlist.

reply

Godfather and Godfather 2 are both 9/10, imo

My son was into The Lion King twenty years ago. Good to hear your young son likes it.

Yeah, I was on vacation this week so I could watch more movies than I usually would be able to.

reply

Manhunter was a great thriller

Barbarella was my first sexy girl poster lol...Fonda was gorgeous

Night of the Living Dead is a classic all-timer

Good stuff!

reply

That's a lot of movies man. I think my record is nine in one week. Impressive.

reply

3.1 movies/day... Good average, good average.

The worst is I don't recall seeing none of them.

Garfield for life though!!

Get low looks good.

reply

I'm always a little jealous of someone experiencing Godfather I and II for the first time. I rate both 10/10, but I think your criticisms are fair.

P.S. If you have any questions about either, I would be happy to answer and hopefully clear up the confusing stuff.

reply

I appreciate that. I might need to rewatch it someday but It would be hard to ask precise questions because my confusion was more like: 'what was that scene? Who was that guy who just got shot in the face? What is going on right now?''

reply

Hi Stone!

The Walking Dead: i know im in the minority on this but i just love the show
Cant stop Wont stop!
I even have a Negan T-Shirt so yes...im THAT idiot you see at Walmart

Life: an 'Alien' ripoff but probably the best of them...almost nothing in this was original but the actors were engaging, the plotline ticked off all the usual points quite effectively and the ending was a real beaut!
Damn good effects too

The Survivalist: a loner encounters two women during the end of the world, sex is exchanged for resources, romance blooms...drama results
Good script, pretty grimy and hopeless atmosphere, very similar tone to The Road but with way less walking around...i 'enjoyed' it for what it was but felt like a shower was in order afterward

Demon Wind: moronic horror film from 1990...im a sucker for the older horrors and watch them when they pop up
It was good, silly fun

Blood Beat: the ghastly spectre of an ancient Samurai stalks and murders a bunch of farmers in Wisconsin...awful SFX, brainless plot and silly hambone acting...i loved it but my tastes are questionable so...1983

Psychos: 3 young women decide to strike back against an abuser from years earlier
Bloody, 'twisty,' very small budget but pretty engaging...i admire the low budget indies and this one was worth my time

reply

I thought Life was better than Alien:Covenant
The Survivalist was a bit creepy. The girl was really young.

reply

Nothing, I have seen NOTHING!

reply

I wish there was more backstory to explain what was going on in The Survivalist. Otherwise, it was a good movie.

reply

Fuel shortages led to widespread production problems in agriculture and as the population began starving off the survivors ganged up and things went south...the story took place 6 or 7 years after the disaster

Why fuel became scarce was never explained...
Pretty good, grim stuff

reply

Oh ya, that rings a bell now. So it must have been a global thing, not just the UK.

reply

That wasnt clear but i remember thinking that The US would have Englands back if it were able to so i assumed the disaster was global...

I sort of like a certain ambiguity in these end of days films...allows the audience to 'participate' a bit more if you get my meaning

reply

Godfather 2 was amazing and yes to the DeNiro scenes!
They really created a believable turn of the century Lower East Side in this movie
I just love that era in American history...Hopeful immigrants, corruption, old traditions transplanted to a new world...wonderful stuff

reply

I really loved the atmosphere in Deniro's epoch. You could almost taste the textures.

reply

Great scenes for sure

Movies:

-Friday the 13th (2009)
Absolutely horrible remake. Only watched it again to remind myself how bad it was.

-The Pit and the Pendulum (1961)
I have to admit I didn't see the whole movie. Despite Vincent Price being in it, the movie was boring and hardly resembled Poe's short story.

-The Fugitive (1993)
Solid 90s action thriller. Ford and Jones especially were excellent. Despite being Dutch, I thought Krabbé was awful.

-U.S. Marshalls (1998)
Definitely not as good as The Fugitive. Just too silly.

TV Shows:

-The X-files - "Familiar"
I liked the idea of the episode, but it has the same problems as the rest of the revival and season 11 in particular. It was just boring and its execution did not feel like X-files. And Duchovny and Anderson look and sound so tired and uninterested.

-Midsomer Murders - "Death of a Hollowman" and "Faithful unto Death"
British detective shows are really good and I have always much preferred Troy as Barnaby's assistant.

-The Flying Doctors - "Public Property"
A favourite from my childhood. But season 1 is not my favourite season and I didn't really like this particular episode.

-Man about the House - "My Son, My Son"
Not quite as good as earlier seasons and also not one of my favourite British sitcoms, but amazing how this typically 70s show still works.

-The Lucy Show - "Lucy with George Burns"
Maybe it was just this particular episode which was nothing more than a silly comedy act with George Burns, but I did not like it at all. I wish they would show I Love Lucy instead!

-Step by Step - marathon
I can't say I was ever a fan of this 90s sitcom, but I've been watching for the nostalgia. The early seasons were actually okay, but this last season sucks big time.

-Hotel - marathon
I decided to check this show out online for nostalgic reasons, but could only find episodes in German. Which actually adds to the "so bad it's good" factor!

-Unsolved Mysteries - marathon
This show was great, why can't shows be like this anymore? Love Robert Stack, who also happened to be in an episode of Hotel.😁

-Buffy The Vampire Slayer - "Welcome to the Hellmouth" and "The Harvest"
I happened to catch these episodes on German tv and I just had to watch. Love it, love it, love it! The first 3 seasons are almost perfect tv for me!

Glad you posted here!
Your first 'What did you watch' post right?

Friday 2009 was horrible...ive managed to forget it ever happened

The Pit and the Pendulum was boring
But damn i loved Price in most anything
Legend

The Fugitive is a great action thriller
Loved it

I need to look into these new XFiles episodes...i enjoyed the original series

reply

Hi, Shogie! Yeah, I think it is.

If you watched the original series, you should probably check out the revival. But I do find it rather disappointing. Especially this season which seems to mimic other shows like 24 or Black Mirror.

reply

Thanks
I should check out Black Mirror too...several people here seemed to love it
Ive got a vacation coming in a few weeks so maybe then

Thanks as always Stratego

reply

No problem, sweetie.😘

reply

Yeah, you did watch more than some " crappy tv " and had some worthwhile contributions to make. 😉

I've enjoyed Unsolved Mysteries for years and still watch it occasionally although I never get through an entire episode because they're all previous ones I've seen. I like Dennis Farina as well as Robert Stack.

Yeah, The Fugitive is a great flick, one of my favorites. I've seen it several times. I also used to enjoy the old b&w tv series. My mom was hooked on it. I've always thought one of the silliest things about U. S. Marshals was that absolutely ridiculous disguise Snipes was wearing at the end.

reply

Ugh, yeah, he looked like André 3000 or something. And then that ridiculous chase that followed. I never saw the original show, it never seemed to be on tv in my lifetime. I'm curious, but it's quite a lot of episodes.

I like Farina, he seemed like a nice guy, but Stack added a certain eeriness, especially with all those different, creepy locations. Seriously, those older episodes always creeped me out, being home alone most of the time didn't help either!

I see I typed 'Marshals' with a double 'l' and you probably unconsciously copied it. My bad!

reply

I think Farina had a classiness about him; had a great head of hair ! He was a former real-life Chicago cop who went on to play cop roles in films. I used to like Robert Stack as Elliot Ness in the tv series, The Untouchables, even further beyond your time.

reply

Yeah, never saw that show either, but it sounds interesting. I love that era.

reply

Welcome!

The fugitive: Solid 90's action flick. 7.5/10
US MArshalls: I find it actually quite fun. 7/10

Btw I don't think thats your first contribution to this thread.

reply

Really? It must've been a while ago, because I totally don't remember!
