Really Wish General Discussion Was An Escape Away From Politics...

...And with that any and all bullshit about Trump, Obama, Clinton, and fucking "SWJ's finding it's way into every topic. Don't you people have any politcial groups to infest? Can't there be more thoughtful and entertaining discussions instead of just partsian bullshit. And what is up with topic headers about turkeys, "Do you like Asian women?", and jerking off at work?

Anyway this is just an angry, wish fulfillnent rant I wanted to get off my chest. :p

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

😎

This isn't the kitchen though. That's Retromogul's point. The contents of the kitchen are spilling out where they don't belong, onto a movie site. Retromogul is saying, keep the kitchen stuff in the kitchen and stop bringing it here.

About 1/4th of the active threads in the recent discussions are politics related... However, if you just skip the obvious ones about those three (Trump, Clinton and Obama), then it's fairly easy to sidestep the bulk of them...

Just don't engagge and instead post something movie related or comment on a particular movie...

reply

Yeah. And there is a politics board here, but nobody seems to use it, or at least they didn't last time I checked. This is part of why I've been posting less in general discussion than I used to. I'm quite a political person (and occasionally I can't stop myself from replying to some political thread here), but I'd prefer this site just be about movies and stuff. I mainly keep my political discussion to Facebook.

I suppose a lot of political discussion is going on in the Donald Trump board. Be nice if it would stay there. But then again I hate seeing that bastard's face every time I go to the Moviechat home page and look at the trending section (and for the record I hate seeing Clinton's face as well). But oh well, can't have everything, I guess.

reply

My sentiments exactly. There's no point having a politics board if it's always going to spill out over here. If everyone who wants to talk about politics stick to the politics board then they're more likely to get a response there. If not, bad luck. It just means more people on the site want to talk about movies.

reply

Retro,
I have heard the people speak, well at least you two. In an effort to improve the board, and foster good relationships, I shall forego any political posts for now.

Please feel free to come up with a fascinating new thread. Thanks.

😎

reply

I can't speak for anybody else but when I come to MC I'm looking for some fun.

I get enough of the real world in the real word and want an escape.
Having said that even I have my limits and boundaries.

reply

Agree. I already got enough of the real world and politics as it is too. That at least needs to calm down for GD.

reply

I completely agree with you. Solved 99% of the problem by putting the worst offender on ignore. Oddly, he started out as an okay poster, but over the months has increasingly become a nuisance, to the point where I'd now call him an angry troll.

The only down side to putting him on ignore is I came here about a week ago and couldn't figure out why there were only 7 threads on the first page. Had Jim decided to reduce the # of threads on each page? Turned out it was because that poster had posted 5 threads. I'll bet you can't guess what their topics were. Briefly took him off ignore to see if that was the problem, so I saw the titles.

reply

Cat! Back she is.
Welcome back lovely,hope you're ok?

Fixing the ignore function so that only the specified poster is ignored would really help I think.

reply

YodaDazed! I'm okay, thanks. Still evacuated, and expect to be for another week. But staying at a friend's and taking care of her dog, who I adore and is excellent therapy! So I'm grateful and quite comfy :)

I know what you mean about the broken ignore feature, but finally I decided enough was enough, the worse he got, and it was worth not being able to read whatever few replies made to him by non trolls.

reply

I'm happy to hear that you are comfortable and you have a dog back in your life now,not so happy that you're still evacuated.Hopefully home soon.

Regarding that person, the sad thing is he obviously gets a huge thrill out of posting the stuff he does and receiving the responses that he does. That makes him a troll.

The good thing is that not many people here actually do respond to him anymore.

reply

I took an almost instant dislike to him when I encountered him on IMDb and was dismayed to discover him here, shortly after signing up. So, I wasn't fooled by his facade; I knew his pattern.

reply

He seems to only get one responder and that's our resident (!) Walter Mitty.
Nice that they have one another.

reply

Not sure who you're alluding to here. He actually has several.

reply

He does? Oh well good for him!

reply

First off, I'm glad you're back! I hope you're back back. And that everything is okay.

I finally broke and did the same as you, and was so confused why there were so few threads on the page all of a sudden. But this place is much nicer now, isn't it?

reply

Thank you, Mina :). I think I'm finally back back, barring any other natural (or unnatural) disasters! *throws box of salt over shoulder and knocks on nearby woody things for insurance*

Ha, you too! Oh yes, this place is *much* nicer now! I don't regret it at all.

reply

Oh, goody Cat! You’re back! I was concerned about you and posted about you being missing. I didn’t rcv a reply so then more of a worry. Will the nightmare never end for you?

As far as politics on this board, I prefer them not to be. This is an escape with fun thrown in for me. I will say for the record I’m in the 😎 camp, but I don’t wish to see a back & forth here. I value my MC pals too much to be in a heated exchange. As others have done I also have replied a few times, but then dropped it by agreeing to disagree. I’ve had too many laughs with you folks to jeopardize it over something that will not be resolved one way or the other.

reply

Ksp! I did read your post a few days ago but was too tied up with things to respond, until now. Sorry to have worried you, but I appreciate your concern. The nightmare's gotta end sometime, right? Even the odds say that.

I know you're in MCM's camp politically, but you express yourself *very* differently, and don't post a plethora of "beating the same old tired drum" threads, either. There does come a point where agreeing to disagree is the only sensible thing to do. A certain poster could learn a lot from you.

reply

You seem to be more upbeat which is a good attitude. You’ve had so much thrown at you over the last year to bring you down, so the only way to go now....is UP! Right?

reply

I am more upbeat. Right, so many bad things happened, the only way left to go was up!

reply

For Cat: 😺😸😹

reply

I think it can be an escape from politics. Just don't click on the links of the topics you feel will get you fired up, like a political post. If a reply to you starts delving into politics, ignore it and move on. I gave up awards shows for that very reason, haha. I think there are plenty of people on this site who will discuss anything.

reply

Having read some of the posts here I feel the same way. Any thread about Hillary, Trump, Obama, or whomever almost always says what it is about in the title so a vast majority of the time it is possible to avoid such threads. While successful this board has nowhere near the activity that the old IMDb boards had and that is frustrating to many including myself. More people might be content to stay on other boards if there was more activity on those boards.

reply

For a long time it was tolerable because there were only a few such threads here and there, maybe 1 or 2 a day or every few days. Then it was easy enough to skip over them and move on.

But once they became increasingly prolific, not to mention tediously repetitive, making good use of the ignore feature was the only sensible solution, for me.

reply

^ This

At one point there were about four threads about Hillary!

reply

cat, the internet overflows with angry, emotionally stunted people. A movie I like, and it's not a fred movie, and I accept that probably most people would think it's not even a very good movie, is the crime comedy, Avenging Angelo, starring Sylvester Stallone and Anthony Quinn in his last role as mob Don, Angelo. In this movie, on a DVD from beyond the grave, Angelo tells Madeline Stowe, his daughter, to "beware the person who is in pain, and wants YOU to know about it." Same advice here. There are too many toxic assholes here. IGNORING them is psychic self-defense. Good for you!

reply

Same. You're not the only one that has been feeling this way. Some users on this site just don't know to behave themselves and it's also a bit surprising how the moderators didn't step in regrading this ongoing issue. Some titles of those politics were even outright troll baiting at worst as oppose to be open up for a genuine discussion. Plus the world of politics doesn't always revolve around the US issues for some people on here to relate to. I believe even one of the users stop posting around here over the past weeks since the posts were becoming too out of control.

Granted there is an official politics board on this site that is almost left deserted. But the Trump board so far seems to be the official and the most active substitute for politics.

reply

I don't mind whatever people want to post -- I am all for free speech, but I agree, ideally it would be nice to see those conversations in either Politics or The Soapbox.

Practically speaking, however, Politics and The Soapbox are buried at the bottom of the page. General Discussion seems to have become the de facto place to post anything not related to a movie, actor, etc.

A possible solution: Move the Soapbox and Politics forums to the top of the forums underneath General Discussion and Latest Posts -- temporarily, or as a trial?

I don't think it is a mod issue; maybe people will find their way to those areas so they can discuss with other likeminded people. If they don't and it stays in General Discussion, there is always the Ignore button. At least General Discussion is lively, and while we all may not want to see every post or thread, lively on a message board is good.

TL;DR:

I am fine with having all of it in General if it is too much of a hassle to find the buried Politics forum. I would rather not have the place over-modded (even though I am personally sick of political discussion, haha).

~~~~~~~~~
ETA: I actually like all of it in General, the more I look at it. This place is evolving naturally and that is a good thing. Always something interesting to see!
