What did you watch on this fine week? (01/07-01/13)

Hi, it'S nice to see you.

One movie and lot's of Black Mirror for me this week:

Ted 2 (2015 TV): I almost turned it off after 5 minutes but gave it a chance and finally, I enjoyed it. There are a few LOL moments, the scene with Morgan Freeman was gold and Ribisi was still great. The ending was copied on Dumb and Dumber To and that was the worst decision.6/10

Black Mirror Binge:
S1E1 : Well, I did not expect that at all. Quite unique, I mean, I never saw anything like it before. The PM has to bang a pig or the Princess dies. Speechless I is. 7-7.5/10
S1E2: Great atmosphere, creepy-hi-tech feel to it. I liked seeing the guy from Get out again. 7.5-8/10
S1E3: Interesting idea, average execution. I can’t say I did not enjoy it. 6.5/10

S2E1: Good execution, good acting, good story, no low no high, that’s the problem. 6.5-7/10
S2E2: An exhilarating ride from start to finish. It was intense and thrilling. I have my reserve concerning the final twist but it really got my blood pumping. 8/10
S2E3: The script was not bad, the cinematography was nice but it’s probably the weakest link here. 6/10
S2E4: I liked the concept, some good ideas were offered here but I felt like the final punch was not as hard as it was meant to be. Hamm was solid in his role. 7.5-8/10

S3E1: Might be my favorite concept yet and it was well exploited, especially thanks to some great acting. The title Nosedive fits the script perfectly. 8-8.5/10
S3E2: It took a long time for it to get to the good part but the good part was GREAT! 7-7.5/10
S3E3: Got me hooked from start to finish, and once more, what a finish! 8/10
S3E4: Very soft for a Black Mirror episode but still a good concept that was well executed. 7/10

I have been watching the old TV show The Computer Chronicles. Not very exciting but it’s good nostalgia.

reply

Hum, never heard of.

reply

It was a show on in the 80s and 90s. They would interview people about different computer technology. Watching is like a history of the personal computer. If your into tech it’s a good watch.

I watched the STEELERS lose and the Vikings WIN on that AMAZING last play!!!! And I LOVED both!

Oh yeah, I also watched some episodes of Black Mirror, one of the best series of all time.

GO VIKINGS and JAGS!!

😎

anyone but New England.

reply

AMEN, Bro! I'm rooting for the Jags and the Vikings. The Jags are one of the four teams never to appear in a Superbowl. And the Vikings are 0 and 4 in Superbowls.

GO JAGS!

GO VIKINGS!

reply

I hate New England so much

I really didn't watch much this week. I finished Season 1 of Taboo for the second time since a friend wanted to see it. Excellent.

I'm not really a comedy guy, but watched Goon: Last of the Enforcers. It was a worthy sequel, but when is a sequel really better than the original?

And lastly I watched the remake of The Hills have Eyes. One of the rare instances when a remake was better than the original.

reply

The Hills remake was really great
Dawn of the Dead was another awesome remake and The Evil Dead one was a real winner!
Funny that they seem to remake horrors but almost nothing else

reply

I agree with you on Ted 2. It was a big step down from the original, although I suppose that was inevitable. I’m glad you’re enjoying Black Mirror.

reply

Word! Have a great one Jack.

I watched series 7 of Vera (DVD, 2017, UK crime drama). Vera episodes never disappoint as there are as many suspects as there are motives, it seems. The closer to resolution, the more twists there are. I find it interesting to watch Vera and her team set out to identify a body with no ID, who nobody knows, especially when the missing persons list gives no leads. 7.5/10

reply

Do you live in the UK?

reply

No, I live in the upper midwest of the US.

Haven't seen any of those mate.

A few episodes of Perry Mason and Knight Rider

David Bowie- The Last Five Years-2017 A documentary about the last years of his life.
I thought it intriguing to see what was going through his mind at this time. There were also
a lot of videos and clips from his early years. The one thing I wish it did have was more Bowie.-8

Odd Obsession-1959 Japanese movie about a man who is losing his virility comes up with ways to get it back.
Strange but interesting -7

Raising Arizona-1987 Coen brothers comedy involving a kidnapping of a baby by a husband and
wife who can't have one. -7.5

Tokaido Yotsuya kaidan- 1959- Japanese movie about a samurai who kills his wife for power and money.
Then is haunted by her and the others he has killed. -7

American Werewolf in London-1981 - Still a great horror movie -7.5

Grey Gardens-1975 Documentary about the Edith Bouvier Beales. Big Edie and little Edie.
Once at the center of society they are now recluses in their family home in the Hamptons.
A wonderful glimpse into what their lives had become. Also very tragic and sad. -8

Desire- 1936 Gary Cooper and Marlene Dietrich,. A standard story about a man who falls in love
with a jewel thief. Some good laughs. -7

The Shape of Water- 2017. I thought this was an excellent shout out to
the old scifi movies. Beautiful Cinematography -7.5

Ted 2 was disappointing for me too. Although I really don't know what I was expecting.

reply

I found Grey Gardens to be very disturbing. I don't know why, but that doc stuck with me for a while after watching it.

reply

It was disturbing. To see how they live and how they interacted with each other.
Holding onto the past the way they did.

I saw the movie not too long ago with Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange.
They really did a good job in their portrayals.

reply

some recent ones - I am impressed

reply

I must have had a moment of weakness.
Won't happen again. Sorry to disappoint you.

reply

disappoint ??? never.

reply

I kind of got roped into going to see Shape of Water.
I'm glad I did. It was a pleasant surprise.

reply

Seems too much of a fantasy for me which is not my favorite genre

reply

It's not my thing either. At all !!!

The story was secondary for me.
I liked the cinematography. They didn't make the "creature" CGI.
Some good comedy.
It's also loosely a sequel to Creature from the Black Lagoon.
I grew up on all those old monster movies.
It kind of had that old school feel to it.
That's probably why I enjoyed it so much.

reply

I may have to watch this for two reasons - I didn't know about the Black Lagoon connection and the movie was filmed entirely in Toronto and Hamilton.

reply

There you go.
You're almost legally obligated.
From the way it looks you either like it or hate it.

reply

I am 24 minutes in - I am wavering on whether to stay with it. Can't get past Richard Jenkins' bad hairpiece.

reply

lol.
His hairpiece is part of the charm

Like I said it might not be for everybody.
Look past the story and appreciate the art.

reply

I didn't The Shape of Water. I tried but failed.

reply

You either love it or hate it.

I'm sorry you were wrong about it. ;)

reply

Raising Arozina: Saw it last year. Same rating as yours. It was really fun.
