Do you like seafood?if so what do you like?

Not many people i know like it. I enjoy some of it like cockles, king prawns and ocean sticks.

reply

It's not my favorite thing but I do eat it sometimes.
Not into the raw thing.

shrimp
lobster
crab legs
sea bass
smelt
I do enjoy a good fish fry.

reply

I love shrimp too. You have to be careful with seafood because of food poisoning.

reply

Yeah, I really don't like to eat seafood when I go out.
You never really know how it's being handled. This true with anything though.
Unless it comes out of a deep fryer.

reply

I've had food poisoning twice and both times were because of fish. Fish burger from McDonald's and cod from fish and chip shop.

reply

You're braver then I am.

I don't think I've ever had fish from a fast food place.
Just the thought of it makes me shudder. lol

reply

I know i always hope it's been cooked properly 😬

reply

You can always ask questions of the chef,a good chef will be able to tell you when the fish was delivered, how it's been stored and at what temperature.
In our chippy they cook the fish to order and you can see them do it,it's all open.

reply

Some places over here prepare it ahead of time to keep up with the rush then
put it under a heat lamp.
You just never know how they store it.

I’d trust a place like you described much more then McDonalds.

reply

Our local chippy is fabulous. They always tell you there will be a wait but nobody seems to mind.
I've never had a filet o fish but I thought McDonald's had rules about not hot holding anything for longer than 5 minutes? I may be wrong though.

reply

I never mind a wait either when I know I'm getting fresh, good, proper food.

I haven't been to one in 20 years.
I'm sure they must have some sort or rules.
I'm not sure how they would enforce it though.
Some of these places get crazy busy.
I really don't know though. I don't eat much fast food at all.

reply

Not even a pizza once a month...in a really good restaurant?

I prefer Burger King myself but we don't have one anywhere near.
A good tip is,if it doesn't taste right don't eat it.I wish I'd taken that advice when I ate crab, having to taste it twice once in reverse was horrendous.

reply

I really don't.
I always prefer to eat my own food.
When I do go out it's usually some fancy place that you over pay for your food.

I only eat pizza a couple times a year.

I try to eat healthy. For a lot of good that did me right?
To be fair over the past couple months I have eaten more than I
have in the last 20 years. Why not.
There was a time when Burger King had Whoppers for 99 cents.
Back in those days I lived on Whoppers.
I can’t even stand the thought of them now.

reply

Yes, that's a good chef. Try finding a chef of any kind, let alone good, in, say a Golden Corral or a Sizzler or an Outback Steak House.

reply

I don't know what's more dangerous, Russian roulette or eating a Fish burger from McDonald's

reply

Filet-O-Fish are actually really the safest bet you can get in a McDonald's. The fish is grilled in a clean, timed oven, the bun steamed and it is prepared away from all the other burgers.

I don't know how it is in the US but for the UK, Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia that's how it is done.

I don't do McDonald's often but sometimes anything familiar is worth a shot and I watch like a hawk.

reply

Especially during the hot, humid days of summer. Often, during a heatwave, and/or if when the temps go into the upper 80's or higher, I'll avoid eating seafood, despite my intense love for it.

reply

I’m a Florida gal...what is Florida’s main fare? You got it! Fish! I move to South Mississippi on the Gulf. What is MS’s main fare? Fish! But, an emphasis on shellfish. All of the casinos offer all you can eat shrimp, crab legs, crawfish, etc. When we dine at the buffets we pass up the shrimp and crab legs as we’ve had our fill.

Yummy, a fish fry with hush puppies! Oh, don’t forget the buttered grits! Coffee made in a coffee can on the Coleman stove out by the lake. Swimming, skiing, boating...doesn’t get any better!

“Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days”

reply

That reminds me of the days when I still had my boat.
Weekends on the lake and camping on the sandbars.

Those were definitely the days.

reply

"McDonald's Fish Sandwich" should be a post of the Words That Don't Belong Together topic.

reply

Anything preceded by the name McDonald's should be on that thread.

reply

And, you know, I did this same topic a month ago. What, exactly, has changed, other than a newbie couldn't be bothered to scroll through what has come before?

reply

You know as well as I do that unless it's right in front of people and not older than 5
minutes long it never existed.

reply

I’m from a landlocked city, so I always make a point of getting some good, fresh seafood whenever I’m in Vancouver or Seattle.
And I love sushi.

reply

Sushi good one too.

reply

I never liked sushi, really. Raw fish doesn't appeal to me.

Yet, I see where many people would like it.

reply

I am also of English heritage, so sometimes some good ole’ greasy fish n’ chips hits the spot.

reply

I LOVE seafood. My favorites are:

1. Lobster
2. King Crab Legs
3. Shrimp
4. Crabs
5. Certain types of fish

Mmmmm.

😎

reply

Love the stuff. Muscles, calamari, prawns, flathead tails, whiting, tuna steaks cooked medium rare, salmon raw with wasabi and soy sauce and of course lobster.

reply

Yes, I like most fish. Lobster, shrimp, scallops, clams, mussels, oysters, calamari, tuna, swordfish, cod, salmon, and my favorite - red snapper.

reply

Oh, yes. I forgot scallops, mussels, and calamari (on occasion). Red Snapper is okay. Clams--not so much any more.

reply

Oh, yummy! I do love seafood.

Alaskan Wild-caught Sock-eye or King Salmon

Swordfish

Lobster

Shrimp

Prawns

Hake

Halibut

Occasionally, when I go out to eat, I enjoy a great fried seafood platter.

Tuna Fish

(I don't eat swordfish or tuna that often, however, because they do have a great deal of mercury in them.)

reply

I love seafood but im only so-so on sushi...not awful but im not a fan
Anything else and im all in...
And i need to google cockles, i keep hearing that but i have no idea what they are
And now i want fried clams
Damn

reply

You're smart to lay off sushi, Shogun. Raw fish can be dangerous. On an episode of "Monsters Inside Me", a woman got a vicious parasite from sushi made from catfish they had caught during a trip to Africa. That was the end of my sushi eating days. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

😎

reply

Yikes! That sounds awful
I googled cockles btw
Small clams...i never knew

reply

Also a part of numerous jokes, and what sweet Molly Malone sold in Dublin. She has a statue there, you know.

😎

reply

Cool
Ill have took that up
Its been awhile

reply

Here it is:

BTW, the song is also sunk by the old drunk beaten up by Alex and his Drooges in A Clockwork Orange.

😎

reply

Thx
I need to see Clockwork again...great and gruesome stuff

reply

One of the greatest films of all time IMHO.

:-)

reply

Ouch!! I hope the woman recovered and is okay. Raw fish is dangerous, which is why I won't eat sushi, but I loved many, if not most cooked fish.

reply

I believe by the end of the show they managed to kill the parasite.

😎

reply

Even if the parasite was killed off, the thought of eating raw fish really doesn't appeal to me, plus I consider raw fish too risky to eat.

reply

A wise thought.

😎

reply

Thanks, MovieManCin2.

reply

You're welcome, mplo.

😎

reply

Fear mongering, sheesh ! Artery clogging baloney ( not to mention yours ) is probably more so. 🙄

reply

Not eating sushi is probably a good idea. It's too risky, imho. Also, raw fish, generally, has never appealed to me.

reply

Fresh raw fish, from the top of the catch, is extra healthy and good for you. No experience = no valid opinion.

Chacun a son goute

reply

To each their own, R_Kane, but I simply don't buy that.

reply

Fresh fish, especially straight from the sea is low risk.
In order for food poisoning bacteria to grow on food it needs heat, the danger zone to keep food is between 5c and 63c.
Bearing in mind that fish is already cold,it will be kept on ice or in a chiller until used.
Added to this that heat is not introduced into the sushi making process it's just not possible for bacteria to multiply.
You are far more at risk from the rice element of sushi.Rice is a high risk food and once cooked it needs to be cooled quickly.

Anyone who's ever had food poisoning from fish it will undoubtedly be due to bad food handling/storage or spoilage.

reply

Some foods, however, are more vulnerable to bacteria growth than others through heat. Raw seafood is one of them.

reply

You wouldn't be heating sushi.

reply

Most sushi (and I say most sushi, because there's vegetable sushi, as well). however, is raw fish, which is still perishable, and is therefore more vulnerable to the proliferation of bacteria that can cause serious food poisoning, ranging from minor discomfort, paralysis, or even death, in some people. That, imho, is not something to scoff at or take lightly.

reply

Not "more vulnerable" at all because there is no heat involved in the preparation process.Fish comes from cold water and is often frozen straight away to kill parasites.
As I mentioned earlier in order for bacteria to multiply it needs heat, between 5c and 63c being the ideal temp for bacteria to grow.Below that it cannot multiply and above that bacteria is killed.

reply

How come cooking kills germs then? It involves heat, that's why.

reply

Only above a certain temperature, between 5c and 63c and it's a playground for the multiplication of bacteria.

reply

Raw fish is still much more vulnerable to bad bacteria, and/or spoilage, especially if it's not stored or handled properly.

reply

Any protein based food is unsafe if it isn't handled correctly.
Raw fish is most certainly not "much more vulnerable".

reply

I have to disagree somewhat, Dazed. I think that any perishable food that's uncooked, or not cooked properly is vulnerable to the proliferation of deadly bacteria, and raw fish is no exception. I stand by what I've said.

reply

Your own statement was that raw fish is "much more vulnerable"?
It isn't, it is less vulnerable for the reasons I've told you more than once.
You can take it to the bank, this is my job,I know this stuff,I have to know this stuff. You can't argue with facts.
My statement that :-
"Any protein based food is unsafe if it isn't handled correctly." also correct.

reply

Your statement "Any protein-based food is unsafe if it's handled or stored incorrectly is true, Dazed, but that doesn't mean that raw fish shouldn't be included in that category.

reply

The clue is in the word "any".

reply

Correct, Dazed. I've eaten a lot of sushi, sashimi and raw herring in my life, even the cheap kind, and I've never had any food poisoning. Never had any problems with raw beef either. Knock on wood!

reply

I'm glad about that!

reply

Maybe you just got lucky, Stratego. I'll tell you, however, that raw fish and sashimi don't appear to me, neither does raw beef, pork, chicken or lamb, and neither does herring, whether it's cooked or uncooked.

reply

So my whole family, friends and colleagues have also gotten lucky? They eat sushi and raw herring all the time. I think I've only met like two people who claim to have had food poisoning. It still doesn't stop them from eating raw fish.

reply

Raw salmon, for some reason, is very tasty.

reply

Any particular type of salmon, Strat? Sockeye, Coho, Irish, Scottish? All are yummy, but I will get Scottish when I can get it--and a stuck (speared) fish over a netted fish.

reply

Oh, I got to admit, I never really pay attention to where my fish comes from.

reply

Cockles are delish, I prepare them just like mussels. Also tasty are razor clams and periwinkles.

reply

Yum to all the clams!
I like white wine/lemon/garlic for the boiling
Oysters raw with cocktail sauce or lemon (or both)

reply

I haven't had oysters that often, they're a bitch to open!

Even though we've got the best here in Zeeland!

reply

The best of everything i bet😉

reply

We've got the best of everything here in Holland! Come on, isn't it obvious?!

reply

It most certainly is😃

reply

Ahhh . . . hashish . . . opiated hashish, in a hookah filled with Absinthe and not water . . .

This is a replay to Stratego's post directly above you, Shogun. I know that you would never use drugs.

reply

I was rather thinking of clogs and tulips and bicycles and prostitutes.

reply

So, a prostitute wearing clogs and riding a bicycle with tulips in her hair about sums it up? Okay, but factor in the hash and the Absinthe bong, and THEN you've got a party!

And maybe a movie.

reply

All you need for a party is me, everybody here in Holland knows that.

reply

I call mussels in the shell "the chicken wings of the sea." There's not enough flesh inside to justify the work it takes to jimmy it out. SHELLED mussels, on the other hand . . .

reply

Most of the shells open when cooked, so I've never really had that many problems. I prefer to eat them from the shell, steam cooked with some white wine, herbs and vegetables. Yummy!

reply

I was thinking of raw mussels, like raw clams, oysters, shrimp and . . .

Raw is the best. I don't like raincoats.

reply

Raw mussels? Hm, I don't know about that. I like them so much prepared this way.

reply
