Neglected Gems

Name a movie that you love that almost nobody you know has seen or cared for
It could be brilliant or silly, funny or scary...anything goes!

'Ride With the Devil' is my pick...
A quite good cast, performances were great, the bittersweet romance and brutal violence were perfectly portrayed, some of the dialogue is still with me after many years and the production values were top shelf
This is one fine forgotten beauty of a film!
See it if you can find it:)
You got one?

The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey - 1988
Dead and Buried - 1981
Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead - 1995
Living in Oblivion - 1995
The Ascent - 1977

To qualify your answer I've never heard of Ride With the Devil.

reply

'Ride...' is amazing
A perfect time capsule of the post Civil War era South when some guys wouldnt give up the fight...great romance, action and tragedy
I saw Dead and Buried and Denver...liked both a lot
Ill seek out the others
Thx:)

reply

Is that the Skeet Ulrich movie? Because I remember pretty bad reviews at the time.

reply

Yeah Ulrich was the 'hot/hunky' hero guy, Jewel (that pretty folk singer girl) was his gal and Maguire was a sort of everyman type
I recall the crappy reviews but i promise if you seek it out you will dig it...
Great story!

reply

Living in Oblivion was the first one that came to mind!

reply

Great movie!

"Ride with the devil" 1999 starring Tobey Maguire

I'm going to go with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, although I know of one person who has at least heard of it!

Also Karakter, my favourite Dutch movie, which actually won an Oscar.

And speaking of favourite 80s horror movies in the other thread, I'm also going to nominate the director's cut of My Bloody Valentine. I really think it's underrated compared to other old school slashers.

Ooh, and The Room, no one besides my sister and mother knows or appreciates this movie!

reply

Im very well aware of Kuch Kuch because of a very funny lady i know (thank you very much Strat...Bollywood sheesh!!)
Ill look around the usual sites for Karakter...i really enjoy 'foreign' stuff
'Bloody' is an all time slash classic (maybe my favorite genre so i get that!)
'The Room'...i simply wont speak to anyone who hasnt been subjected to this masterpiece of masochism...God i adore this dreck-fest!!

reply

I have tried watching The Room about five times and I get about 10-15 minutes in before bailing out.

reply

I really don't get that. I admit, the first time can be a little difficult at times, because you have no idea where the movie is going, but every time I watch the movie now I still find it hilarious. I only skip through the vomit-inducing sex scenes. Maybe you should first check out some of the famous scenes on youtube.

reply

I heard about Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Never watched it though.

reply

It's quite a sit! A little over three hours! I always split it in half, most Bollywood movies have an intermission halfway.

reply

Burnt Offerings 1976

reply

Hell yeah
Thats a beaut!
Also, in these revenge/slasher tales i often find myself siding with the killer...the preppies who ran him over/tossed him out a window/set him on fire etc all seem to have it coming in these toolshed chopper movies
I love these movies:)

The Adventures of Ford Fairlane

I love Dice, but let's face it -- his comedy is pretty limited to a few riffs that were already played out a bit by the time this movie was released. But the movie was crafted brilliantly around those riffs and fit Dice to a "T". I don't think anyone could have produced a better film for his character. It was stupid and silly and I just loved it.

Sambuca milkshakes, Koala bears, the lovely Lauren Holly, the peerless Wayne Newton, and Ed O'Neill's acapella version of "Booty Time"...what's not to love?

reply

Saw it ages ago and recall it as being ok
I should give it a look again
And yes, he was limited but I enjoyed The Diceman too;)

reply

Ace in the Hole (1951)
Paths of Glory (1957)

reply

Missed both unfortunately!
Im on a war movie kick this week...rewatching The Pacific right now
Its really good ( i think Band of Brothers might be slightly better tho)

reply

Great scene in Paths of Glory where Kirk Douglas is leading the charge, loses his rifle and keeps on going with a pistol.

reply

I gotta see it
Kirk is 101 years old btw
Quite a fella!

reply

Silent rage - 1982.Everyone i know either hasn't seen it or has and didn't think much of it.But i've always loved it and consider it one of my favorite slasher films.

reply

Great stuff!
When Chuck walked into that MC bar...man you just knew those bikers were in for it✊🏻

reply

Thought of some more from the 90's

Shallow Grave
Palookaville
The Funeral
White Sands
The Last Supper
City of Lost Children
Lone Star

Not classics but all decent movies.

reply

You got me there
I only saw Shallow and White
You are a fellow of fine taste so if i can catch the others i will
Thx GD:)

Wristcutters: A Love Story (2006)

There's something about this movie that really appealed to me that I can't quite place my finger on. It's definitely a character driven plot that sucks you in from the start. If you have a chance, check it out. It's free on Prime.
