What did you watch on this faithful final week of 2017? Dada daaaaam!

Yep, here we are gang. The last post of the 2017 edition of this thread. Congrats to all the survivors and I wish to thank you all for coming back every week. I hope we will keep this going for 2018 and hopefully more people will join in. Now let'S take that bottle and make it POP!

My final week of 2017:

Pottersville (2017 Netfilx) : ‘’ Maynard (Shannon), a beloved local businessman is mistaken for the legendary Bigfoot while on an inebriated romp through town in a makeshift gorilla costume during the Christmas season. The sightings set off an international Bigfoot media spectacle and a windfall of tourism dollars for a simple American town hit by hard times.” A very strange movie that was. The script/story was unfortunately too weak, even my man Michael Shannon could not lift this up over the “mediocre” bar. I would call this an interesting failure. 5/10

Le diner de con (1998 TV):” To amuse themselves at a weekly dinner, a few well-heeled folk each bring a dimwit along who is to talk about his pastime. Each member seeks to introduce a champion dumbbell. Pierre, an avid participant of the game, runs into one problem after another that devilishly compromises his secrets, turning the tables on him and his objective, which diverges as the movie progresses.” This is one of my favorite French comedies. It’s simple, funny and effective plus some great acting make this a thumbs up in my book. 8/10

Bright (2017 Netflix): Orcs, Elves, thugs, FBI, Will Smith and a magic wand. There is the recipe for a unique mess of a movie. Actually it’s not really a mess, it’s just that with its unique approach, it somehow manages to remain an average buddy cop movie that fails to distinguish itself from the mass. High note: Cool action scenes. Low note: Failed attempt at humour. 5.5-6/10

Friday after next (2002 DVD): ‘’ Craig and Day Day have finally moved out of their parent’s houses and into their own crib. The cousins work nights at a local mall as security guards. When their house is robbed on Christmas Eve they team up to track him down.’’ This is one of my favorite Christmas movies. What? I thought we could be honest with each other. I just enjoy this shizzle out of this franchise. Well actually, Friday is my fav comedy ever with 10/10, and then we got Next Friday with Mike Epps stepping on my nerves a bit too much for me to enjoy it properly, with 6/10. And finally, 7/10 for Friday after Next

!!!!!!!!HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!

reply

Yeah, haven't seen it either.

reply

The end is coming so...gotham season 2 - good series.
Twilight zone season 4 - not that bad
Spiderman homecoming - blu ray version 7.5/10

reply

Cheers Crofty

reply

Im sorry to say ive missed all of yours
I watched...

Band of Brothers: i saw it years ago and forgot how great it was...amazing cast and the battle scenes were scarier than most anything ive ever watched!
Masterpiece!!

Veronica: Mexican psychological thriller about an unstable young woman and her therapist...i knew almost nothing going in and really liked it
Wow its a doozy and worth the time

Daylights End: the usual DTV junk about soldiers fighting a vampire plague...fun, silly late night nonsense
if you like goofy horror movies

Pusher: UK remake of a very good Danish series i saw years ago...a drug dealers whole life falls apart after a bust...the original was perfect and this probably didnt need to be made but it was very good anyway

Unforgettable: Rosario vs Heigl for a man in this 'psycho lady' thriller...nothing we havnt seen before
Very stupid but both leads are really good looking so why not?

reply

Band of Brothers IS a masterpiece. Undeniably. I own the serie on DVD. 10/10

Wanted to see Pusher for many years but still have some reserves.

reply

Reserves about Pusher?

reply

Yeah, it looks a bit low-budget isn't it?

reply

The original Danish 'Pusher' (1996) had a 6,000,000 DKK budget for the first of the trilogy
The Uk remake 'Pusher'
(2012) had a £2,300,000 budget
Thanks for giving me homework SK;)
So adjusted for some minor inflation id say the budgets were not low but i dont totally understand what all that confusing European funny money is worth lol
Thing is both versions (and
the sequals to a lesser degree) had great sound and picture quality, perfectly good performances, a violent gangland story that reminded me a lot of 'The Long Good Friday' and great camera work...
Zlatko Buric and Mads Mikkelson appear in the various versions and sequals as a big bonus...wonderful actors in this, those guys are amazing!
It would also help if you dont hate techno music because thats pretty much the soundtrack
Id urge you to watch them all...great European gangland stuff!

reply

ooooh thanks, I sure will!!

Shogun, Band of Brothers IS a heartfelt work that is tantamount, or beyond tantamount, a work of genius; but may I recommend another HBO one-shot piece to you, from the same era, completely different in narrative, but, in, my opinion, identical in quality then HBO version of the play, Wit?

You will cry. And also rejoice.

When have I ever streeted
you wrong, my friend? Find Wit on HBO On Demand.

reply

You steered me to Smilf and were right to do so
as for Wit I will seek it out
Thx R_Kane!

Fuck with SK

Y'all know what I do

Banshun-1949 - A Japanese movie about a daughter living with her father. He's worried about her not being married
and she's worried about him being alone. A beautiful heartfelt movie.-8.5

Hangmen Also Die!- 1943- A man kills a Nazi official in Czechoslovakia. As he hides hostages are being exceuted
until they find him. He struggles with not turning himself in. - 7

All Through the Night-1942 Bogart and gangsters and Nazis. This one didn't do much for me.
A typical movie about anti Nazi propaganda which was popular at the time. - 6

The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit - 1956- Gregory Peck plays a business man trying to get ahead while
supporting his family. A great cast in a decent movie - 7

Beyond a Reasonable Doubt-1956- A film noir about a man who frames himself for a murder in order
to show the flaws in the system. Interesting story but predictible. - 6.5

Dirty Dozen -1967- I've watched this movie on Christmas eve for as long as I can remember.
One of my favorite war movies. Men on death row are picked to raid a house in Germany. - 9

Cinema Paradiso - 1988. One of my favorite movies ever. I'll say what I said on the movie board.
When I watch this movie It reminds of what movies are capable of.
What movies are supposed to be. How they should make you feel. -10

Also watched
Supernatural - first half of the new season. Still love this show.
Search Party. Re-watched season one and watched season 2.
First season was excellent. Second season lost a little but still good.
Still continue to watch Sunny at least once a day.

Happy New Year mon ami. Continued success with the longest running post on MC.
Well done.

reply

Can't go wrong with the Dirty Dozen
All Through the Night was disappointing.

reply

Such a great movie.
Great action, comedy, acting and a unique story.
Not that I want them to but I keep waiting for Hollywood to remake this movie.

For whatever reason I never saw this Bogart movie.
I was very disappointed.
Not horrible but not what you'd expect from Bogart.
I'm sure it was a contract film.

reply

There were a lot of war movies which were rushed after Pearl Harbor

reply

The movies made for the people that were back home.
The ones to show people that everything was OK.
The ones to make people think the war was fine.
Don't worry at the same time their family was getting killed.

reply

Thanks man!

I know you have a few big titles in there but as you know, Im not the too keen on old movies. Added Dirty dozen to my list though. Where do you find all those oldies btw?

reply

I know you're not. I'll still try to brainwash you though. ;)
Still some really good ones out there.

Most of the time it's from AMC.
myretrofilx.com also has some good ones.
filmstruck.com is awesome but it's a pay site.

Raw (2016) - A French film. A young girl who is vegetarian starts school at a vet college and is forced to eat meat during a hazing ritual. She then becomes obsessed with eating meat. Her older sister is also a student at the same school and the movie focuses on their relationship and the changes going on with both. A decent story if you can believe it. 7/10

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri (2017) - Has the feel of a Coen brothers movie. Good performances all around esp from Sam Rockwell who will win Best Supporting Actor Oscar. 8.5/10

Lady Vengeance (2005) - A South Korean crime drama. After 13 years in prison for killing a young boy, a woman is released and seeks vengeance on the real killer. Bad start to this movie with many flashbacks and attempts at humor. A great last 30 minutes or so. 7.5/10

Lady Bird (2017) - A coming of age movie. Not my thing but I recognize the talent of Saoirse Ronan. Not much happens imo but IMDB has it at 8.3/10 - 7/10 for me.

Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) - Never heard of this movie before. A young girl escapes an abusive cult and tries to re-assimilate into society while living with her sister and brother in law. Great performances from Elizabeth Olsen and John Hawkes. The movie deserved more recognition. 7.5/10

Graduation (2016) - A Romanian drama focusing on a father's hope and dreams for his daughter and how far he will go to realize them. Solid nothing great. 7/10

I Am Sam Kinision (2017) - A HBO documentary on the late comedian. Loved it all around. 9/10

Big Little Lies (2017) HBO TV series. A well produced/acted crime drama in an affluent California town. I thought the ending was a major letdown. 7/10 is generous.

I almost forgot - A Christmas Carol (1951) on Christmas Eve - still good after so many vewings 9/10.

reply

Lady Vengeance was very good
The director did a couple other Vengeance movies that were fun...
Raw is on my list

reply

I thought Martha Marcy was really good.
Olsen really opened my eyes in this movie.
Very talented. Good soundtrack too.

Glad you started the Vengeance movies.
Have you seen Old Boy?

reply

I have seen the American version of Old Boy. I am told the Korean one is better. Its on the list.
Olsen was good which was surprising as she hasn't been on my radar.

reply

I refused to watch the remake of Old Boy.
I figured there was no way it was better than the original so I didn't even bother.

reply

it's different enough to warrent viewing in my opinion... don't expect it to be like the Korean original, it has a very different feel even though a lot of the plot is similar...

I prefer the Korean version (more intense), but i liked both...

reply

I can't force myself to watch it either. And I saw 95% of Lee's movies...

reply

Raw was awesome! One of my favourites this year. Unexpected, just the right amount of funny and gross. And, hello Female Gaze. It's one of those film I wish I can unsee, so that I can watch it for the first time again to get the full effect.

Why did you think the ending to BLL was a let down?

reply

I was expecting a dramatic murder of some kind re BLL

reply

I though the finale was plenty dramatic. But I get what you mean. The way they set it up with the police interviews, I was expecting a somewhat of a "who-dun-it". It wasn't that, but I was very happy with the way things unfolded. GO BONNIE! lol

reply

I agree for LAdy Vengeance. The ending was siiick!

reply

Bright is off my list

reply

I saw Beauty And The Beast and It's A Wonderful Life on television on Christmas Eve. On Christmas day I watched The Muppet Christmas Carol. I also played old recordings of classic Christmas shorts like "Twas The Night Before Christmas", "Pinocchio's Christmas", "How The Grinch Stole Christmas", and "Frosty The Snowman' on both days. Later in the week I watched Clue, Home Alone, Muppet Treasure Island, and The Muppets Take Manhattan.

reply

Very festive.

I watched The Year Without a Santa Claus. My all time favorite of those movies.
I love The Muppet Christmas Carol. I haven't seen it in years.
"Light The Lamp, Not The Rat!"

reply

Thank you godewey! The Muppet Christmas Carol is one of the best Christmas movies and a favorite of mine. I hate "The Year Without A Santa Claus". It's extremely upsetting and a dull drama instead of one of the cute, spirited stories that Christmas shorts are expected to be. I have a bit of trouble with "The Little Drummer Boy" too, but at least that one is presented in its intended serious manner and uses realistic scenarios to relate to Christmas. While I appreciate the story, many scenes are difficult to watch. "A Miser Brothers' Christmas" is okay.

reply

Say it's not so.
I always thought Year without a Santa was inspirational.
Santa was depressed and was shown how much he means to everybody.
Sometimes we all need to be shown our value in this world.
I thought it was relateble to everyday life.
I also like most of the songs.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town was another one.

reply

I accept your view literally, but don't like it applied to Santa Claus. If the short were a general one about an everyday person, did not include an animal getting captured and extremely ill, and had no trite material, then maybe I would enjoy it. Santa Claus knows that he is worshipped and would never abandon his position. He cannot get sick, either. I can't bear to watch what happens to Vixen, and the irresponsibility of the elves, which the real ones would never have, is so irking. The issues regarding the brothers are constantly repeated which ruins the fun of the rivalry. "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" destroys the image of the titular character. Santa Claus is like God: he is simply so. He has not begun life as a human man.

reply

You may have just destroyed my childhood. lol

Seriously, I get what you're saying.

For me it was better to see these characters as "real" people.
Not just these magical things that just are.
Children are naturally inquisitive. To just say this is what it is wouldn't hold the same power. IMO
For instance if a child asked "Why is Santa so magical?" and the response was "he is simply so"
wouldn't do much for me. It would have the opposite effect.

The brother's issues were relatable to me. Brothers fight. Families disagree.
The elves not being perfect made them more believable to me.
The whole aspect of the human factor made me believe.
For me it just made more sense as opposed to just being told this is how it is.

I do love a good Santa debate though.

reply

Very festive indeed! lol

Cheers

Thank you StoneKeeper! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Thank you for this thread, SK! It's been a wonderful place for exchange of opinions and a source of quite a few good laughs.

I haven't seen any of yours this week (Boo)

Movies I fell asleep to this week:

Psycho (the remake) /have seen it before/
Short review: Thumbs down for the sheer unnecessarity of it (is that even a word). Thumbs up for Viggo Mortensen's butt!
Point of falling asleep: Right during the first office scene.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead men do things...!(question mark)
Short review: Umm, wasn't fun. I liked the effects they had for Javier Bardem's character though. That was cool.
Point of falling asleep: There were people running? Or ships? Can't remember.

Movie I did watch this week (well, I was doing other things too, but I didn't fall asleep)

The Great Gatsby (2013)
Nick is an aspiring writer(?) who is drawn into the life of this Gastby character, who's just so Great. I mean, he throws a mean party. But he's also a tragic character, because of love lost and what-not. And some chick named Daisy's in it as well. Like, I get what Luhrmann was going for, with the excesses of the parties and all that, but it was just too much. Too frantic. It was like watching deleted scenes from Moulin Rouge. But more bad. And the music... awful. It's like he took a random selection of Top 40 songs and just plopped them into the movie. Our man Baz's shtick is starting to wear a bit thin to be honest. He takes something old-timey and just slaps a modern soundtrack to some sped up footage. This for a good movie does not make. Cousin walked in during the movie, asked what Spiderman was doing there. Highlight of the film. It looked pretty though, even if it was 90% CGI, and the costumes were great. I was surprised by how much this film just annoyed me.

Have a wonderful New Years, SK!

reply

Christine (1983)
Kill for me (2013)

reply

Ah Mina Mina Mina, always a pleasure! For a good time this thread does make. :)

The Great Gatsby I was able to watch completely after two failed attempts. I actually didn't find it too bad, but It'S not very good either. I liked the music. 6/10

I think I'll write about the movies that put me to sleep too now. It's fun to see where you fell.
