Your favorite movies of 2017?

Not a great year for me...

1. Get out 9/10
2. Trainspotting 2 8/10
3. Guardians of the galaxy 2 8/10

HM: Okja 7.5/10

I'd be hard pressed to say a film from 2017 that I'd recommend to anyone.

Thor : Ragnarok was fun, as was Wonder Woman but reasonable adult movies were in short supply this year.

Some good TV shows though; The Hand Maiden's Tale, Big Little Lies, Top of the Lake: China Girl, Preacher, The Marvelous Mrs something or other, The Orville, Peaky Blinders and Taboo to name a few.

Down year. ‘Sacred Deer’ is the only worthy cinema coming to mind. At least there was Twin Peaks to salvage something.

reply

Oh, Mother! definitely makes my list too, which now stands at, erm, two films.

worst film of the year imo

I have yet to see a lot of the year-end dramas and thrillers (why do they hold them out until the end of the year?)...

So my temporary favourite list is (in the order in which I saw them)...

- Dunkirk
- Blade Runner 2049
- Mother!
- The Killing of a Sacred Deer
- Wind River

I'm sure one or two other films will make the list once I see a few more...

Get Out might have made the list if it weren't for the cop-out ending 😉 ...

Also, Crooked House and Murder on the Orient Express were close to making the list as I enjoy a good murder mystery, but each film was slightly flawed in execution... Crooked House looked too digital and Murder on the Orient Express was too blue & orange and I prefer the ending in the original (executed better there)... Both very much worth watching...

I enjoyed Wind River. It was the only movie I saw in the theater this past year. There was only one other patron in there with me. Telling ?

reply

Yeah, the smaller independent movies have smaller crowds... Especially the non-CGI ones... I don't mind it as it feels like a private cinema, but it also might mean that these films are at risk of not being shown as much...

Wind River is the only one on my list that I missed in theatre as I was travelling that week... Also, Crooked House didn't show at my local theatre...

The only ones that had big audiences at my theatre were Dunkrik and Blade Runner 2049... The only ones without walkouts were Dunkrik and Murder on the Orient Express!

Going by what I've rated on IMDB (the only way I can keep track of what I watch), I've hardly seen any 2017 movies so far. I'm yet to see Mother!, Blade Runner *year*, The Killing of the Sacred Deer or Three Billboards.... Or anything not American/English language. I'll probably be able to name any serious favourites of the year late 2018...

Anyway, out of that list of 12 movies (lol) I think Dave Made a Maze is the thing I've enjoyed most this year, just because it's so inventive. I love a small, quirky movie like that. Anything else has just been blah, fun fluff or a let down (*cough* Trainspotting and Baby Driver *cough*).

:))

Try TheMovieDB (TMDB) to keep track of movies instead of IMDB... it's what i use...

reply

As far as I can remember the only 2017 I've seen was Alien Covenant and that was terrible.

reply

but had the best line of the year "I'll do the fingering" 😂

1. Lady Bird 10/10
2. Dunkirk 9/10
3. Get Out 9/10
4. The Shape of Water 9/10
5. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri 9/10

reply

I don’t think I had seen Lady bird and Shape of water at that time otherwise they would’ve been there too.
