Movies featuring enemy portals in the sky over a city

Been a lot of this in the last several years, but please list older ones too.

Avengers 1

Infinity War

Thor: The Dark World

TMNT 2 Out of the Shadows

Transformers 3 or 4... The one where Cybertron is portalling into Earth orbit.

Were there sky portals in two Transformers movies?

Honorable mentions: Underwater portal in Pacific Rim, non-portal sky swirlies in original Ghostbusters and Suicide Squad, among others. Please help with honorable mentions too.

reply

Yes it was...silly fun!

forgotten about this movie

IW is doing another portal? Itโ€™s going to be the Death Star of the Marvel universe.

reply

Well, the attack in Avengers was done with Thanos' army, so that's just how Thanos rolls.

That round thing in the sky in the IW trailer has to be for a portal, like perhaps a long-term stable gate that will stay open, in order to differentiate it from the free-floating one in Avengers.

reply

Makes sense. The trailer looks good but I really hope they improve the Thanos cgi considerably.

reply

Im certain they will
Trailers are such rush jobs...

Stargate counts?

reply

Stargate is definitely an honorable mention.

I'm mostly trying to remember the portals that are threats, used by enemies and must be shut down. Stargate still counts for that since the gate belonged to the aliens, even though it was mostly used by the good guys and helped them win in the end.

As popular as it has become to have a "bad guy's portal opens over the city," I'm trying to see how often it has been used lately, and historically.

I need to brush up on my Transformers because I swear there have been two sky portals in the five movies.... But I MIGHT be conflating the Technodrome portal in TMNT2 with the Cybertron portal in Transformers 4.

Elysium ??

reply

I didn't see that, but your question marks are questionable... I don't recall reading anything about Elysium that would entail a portal.

What is it from the movie that you're thinking of?

reply

I was thinking of another planet or habitat which was endangering earth.

reply

Interesting take...

I actually thought at first that you might be comparing the ring-shaped habitat with the ring shape of portals, but I like that you were focusing on the violent clash of two different cultures in two separate "worlds," so to speak.

reply

From what i remember,in Elysium didn't show portals.

reply

I bet there is a TV Tropes entry for sky portals.

Hold on... NOPE. Wow, TV Tropes actually doesn't have something!

I am aghast.
