What did you watch this week huh? (22/10-28/10)

Hi everyone, let's spend a bit of time together before jumping back on the ice, before running back on the battlefield and before turning the ovens back on. Yep.

My week:

Boys in the trees (2016 Netflix) : “ Childhood is over and adult life beckons. But for Corey, his past has some unfinished business. When he encounters Jonah, a former childhood friend and now intimidation victim, Corey takes pity on him and agrees to walk him home for old time's sake. What starts off as a normal walk through suburban streets descends into something darker and magical.“
It looked like a horror but it’s not. It happens on Halloween night but it’s actually a touching coming-of-age drama about friendship. It suffers from a few random parts but on the whole I was agreeably surprised. The ending got to me I must admit. 6.5-7/10

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of destiny (2016 Netflix): “A story of lost love, young love, a legendary sword and one last opportunity at redemption.”
The cinematography was nice and the acting was good. The fight scenes and the story were standard. It’s nothing new or remarkable but it was well executed. Im honestly tired of seeing Donnie Yen in so many movies. Can’t stand his face anymore. 6.5/10

1922 (2017 Netflix): “A simple yet proud farmer in the year 1922 conspires to murder his wife for financial gain, convincing his teenage son to participate. “
What I liked: Acting, atmosphere, the first hour. What I didn’t like: The score, the script, the second hour. Basically it’s the story of a man who really wants to keep his house so he kills his wife and drive his son away from him until he’s all alone and lose the house to the bank. It was not a bad movie but the story had much more potential. I wish the father and the son would’ve kept killing people trying to get in their way in a good horror fashion. Instead, it was more of a dramatic movie. 6/10

Napoleon Dynamite (2004 Bluray): I’ve wanted to see this for a long time, I know it’s a polarizing movie and I wondered on which side I’d find myself. Well I had a lot of fun; it made me laugh and was filled with unique moments. I really liked the scene where they eat egg sandwich after work, the dance scene and the wedding scene after the credits. Also, I could look at Napoleon walk/run out of a room all day long. My only critic would be that even though the absence of a storyline didn’t affect the movie, I wished there would’ve been a bit more hilarity and action. Now I’m off to the t-shirt store because I want one that says Vote For Pedro. 7-7.5/10

Rasputin (1996 TV): “HBO biopic about the infamous "mad monk" Rasputin from the court of Tsar Nicholas in Russia.” I almost deleted this from my PVR without watching it but a good thing that I decided to take a look at it, I ended up watching it all. This is the proof that when you have a great story and determination from everyone involved you don’t need a huge budget to make a good movie. Alan Rickman delivers a powerhouse performance that deserved him a Golden Globe and Ian McKellen also won the supporting role award. 7/10

Harbinger Down (2015 Netflix) 6/10 If you have seen The Thing than you have the basic idea of this film. The setting is on a crab boat in the ice and they find an old Russian lander. Its goes badly for crew from there. The reason to watch this are the practical effects and Henrickson, reason not to watch it is pretty much everything else. The film had a good set up for a solid Thing clone but the acting and writing let it down. I still went with 6/10 because I overall liked the film but I wouldn't recommend it to many people.

Krampus (2015 Netflix DVD) 6/10. This is a fun film in many ways but it didn't click with me entirely. Its a Christmas horror film that is on the edge of acceptable for some children to watch. I do like the story they come up for Krampus, and the flashback sequence is nicely done. I just didn't love the film as a whole, but it does have the Christmas movie feeling, just with a darker tone.

The Stunt Woman (1996 TubiTv) 6/10. If you like Michelle Yeoh then this is something to watch that is a little bit different than what she normally does. Its primarily a drama following the life of a stuntwoman. Most of the film is spent during the behind the scenes work for creating action scenes for films, pretty interesting overall. This she does for the head of the stunt team played by Sammo Hung! For martial arts fans there are some good scenes here but it really is primarily a drama. The film is basically broken up into three parts for the story the first and best is her time as a stuntwoman, where the film starts to fail is the romance she goes through in the second part and then the corruption and murder in the third part where it seems it will devolve into a typical action film..but doesn't leaving the film's end feeling off and disappointing. The film I believe is worth a watch, but its latter portion brings the film down in my opinion.

Koma (2004 Asian Crush Streaming) 8/10. This score is probably higher than the film deserves it is a 6.1/10 on IMDB and that’s probably an accurate representation, but for whatever reason I really liked this film. The film revolved around two women in different financial situations competing for the affection of the same man with a backdrop of a series of kidney thefts occurring in the city. Somehow the one girl who suspected the other being involved befriends her and they become intertwined as they both struggle with their issues, one with money issues and a dying mother and the other with kidney disease made more difficult with a hard to match blood type. The ending of the film is how I expected it but at the same time I thought it would get there differently.

is there a character limit?

reply

Haven't seen those movies mate.

The character limit is irregular, as some times it seems to be there and other times not. I don't understand it.

reply

Yeah I was confused by the limit, it just suddenly stopped letting me type. My post was shorter than your original one...odd.

reply

Stranger things: I only watched the first episode, I'll watch more this week so I'll review it in next thread.

I gave an overall of 7.5 to season one so I liked it a lot but Im not one of the hardcore fans.

reply

Hey, I forgot to ask, I watched two movies from your post last week. What did you think of my reviews?

Hombre (1967) - somebody mentioned this movie last week so I had a look as I hadn't seen it in awhile. Great cast with Newman, Richard Boone, Fredric March and Barbara Rush. A solid western somewhat similar to Stagecoach. The movie falls short of a classic as I didn't like the ending. 7.5/10

Creep 2 (2017) - I loved the first one and I expected a huge drop off for the second installment. But there wasn't. Creep 2 is very good with a female videographer this time who gets more involved with the creep. The guy playing the creep is great again. Very good ending. 7.5/10

Unknown (2011) - I missed this 6 years ago. A good premise but I was able to foresee what was going on. Nothing special 7/10.

Happy Death Day (2017) - A fun movie where a young college coed keeps living the last day of her life over and over. Geared toward a younger audience. 6.5/10

Dracula (1979) - A reasonably good adaptation with Frank Langella as Dracula and Lawrence Olivier as Van Helsing. Some thought it ventured too far from the book. Probably the most sensual of the Dracula films. 7/10

Shortwave (2016) - A young couple's daughter is abducted by aliens. Then the father tries to contact the aliens via SETI signals. I am not sure what was going on in this movie especially the ending. It seems that the aliens had already taken over the mother and she kills people. Don't bother watching 4/10

The Eichmann Show (2015) - A BBC films production - it follows the crew who televised the Adolf Eichmann trial in 1961 and the effects of that trial on them and their families. 7/10

"somebody mentioned this movie last week so I had a look as I hadn't seen it in awhile. " - Just another reason why I love this thread.

I didn't know there was a Creep 2 !! I'll definetly watch it. Is it with the same creep? Oh I hope it is! Is it still directed and written by the two guys?
Im too excited, heading to Imdb right meow.

reply

yes the same creep as the first.

I tend to watch a movie (or two) every day. What's even worse is, I keep a month by month list (sad, I know) So far this week, I've watched:

Demonoid (1981)
Wild Beasts (1984)
Human Centipede 2 (2011)
Home Sweet Home (1981)
Containment (2015)
Ghoulies (1984)
Man At The Top (1973)
Brady Bunch Movie (1995)
Geostorm (2017)
A Very Brady Sequel (1996)
Give And Take And Take (2002)
Hooligan Legacy (2015)
Point Blank (2010)
Gods Of Egypt (2015)
Acts Of Vengeance (2017)
Class Act (1992)

Eclectic....if anything?

reply

I have only seen one and it's ..... human Centipede 2.
Yeah...
The first one was weird and meh but the second one is sick and bleeeeaargh!

reply

how bad was Geostorm ??

reply

Actually, I really enjoyed GEOSTORM (it was solid disaster/conspiracy flick that didn't take itself too seriously) and it looked great on the big screen (just a shame that it's tanked at the box office)

reply

thank you

reply

And since typing this, I can now add:
The Hot Rock (1972)

To my list :)

reply

I was thinking of watching Acts of Vengeance - whats your opinion. thanks

reply

It was ok for the first half, but resorted to cage fighting mentality in the second (blame the director, I guess?) but pretty well made for a DTV release.

Slither-- https://moviechat.org/tt0439815/Slither ideal, appropriately ghoulish fun and escapism during a blustery October week-end just prior to Halloween. Contains some great darkly- humored dialogue. 6.5/10

reply

Slither is great! I really enjoyed it. James Gunn knows how to make a fun movie.
