What did you watch this week huh? (22/10-28/10)

Hi everyone, let's spend a bit of time together before jumping back on the ice, before running back on the battlefield and before turning the ovens back on. Yep.

My week:

Boys in the trees (2016 Netflix) : “ Childhood is over and adult life beckons. But for Corey, his past has some unfinished business. When he encounters Jonah, a former childhood friend and now intimidation victim, Corey takes pity on him and agrees to walk him home for old time's sake. What starts off as a normal walk through suburban streets descends into something darker and magical.“
It looked like a horror but it’s not. It happens on Halloween night but it’s actually a touching coming-of-age drama about friendship. It suffers from a few random parts but on the whole I was agreeably surprised. The ending got to me I must admit. 6.5-7/10

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of destiny (2016 Netflix): “A story of lost love, young love, a legendary sword and one last opportunity at redemption.”
The cinematography was nice and the acting was good. The fight scenes and the story were standard. It’s nothing new or remarkable but it was well executed. Im honestly tired of seeing Donnie Yen in so many movies. Can’t stand his face anymore. 6.5/10

1922 (2017 Netflix): “A simple yet proud farmer in the year 1922 conspires to murder his wife for financial gain, convincing his teenage son to participate. “
What I liked: Acting, atmosphere, the first hour. What I didn’t like: The score, the script, the second hour. Basically it’s the story of a man who really wants to keep his house so he kills his wife and drive his son away from him until he’s all alone and lose the house to the bank. It was not a bad movie but the story had much more potential. I wish the father and the son would’ve kept killing people trying to get in their way in a good horror fashion. Instead, it was more of a dramatic movie. 6/10

Napoleon Dynamite (2004 Bluray): I’ve wanted to see this for a long time, I know it’s a polarizing movie and I wondered on which side I’d find myself. Well I had a lot of fun; it made me laugh and was filled with unique moments. I really liked the scene where they eat egg sandwich after work, the dance scene and the wedding scene after the credits. Also, I could look at Napoleon walk/run out of a room all day long. My only critic would be that even though the absence of a storyline didn’t affect the movie, I wished there would’ve been a bit more hilarity and action. Now I’m off to the t-shirt store because I want one that says Vote For Pedro. 7-7.5/10

Rasputin (1996 TV): “HBO biopic about the infamous "mad monk" Rasputin from the court of Tsar Nicholas in Russia.” I almost deleted this from my PVR without watching it but a good thing that I decided to take a look at it, I ended up watching it all. This is the proof that when you have a great story and determination from everyone involved you don’t need a huge budget to make a good movie. Alan Rickman delivers a powerhouse performance that deserved him a Golden Globe and Ian McKellen also won the supporting role award. 7/10

I was going to say I haven't seen any of yours this week. Then I remembered I watched Napoleon Dynamite. It was alright, but I don't understand the big deal over this movie.

I also started 1922. When I'll finish it, I don't know! But Thomas Jane DON'T HAVE A WIFE ANYMORE! (Maybe I'll do a double half-feature with it and Automata)

This week for me:

Before the Rain (1994)
During the Bosnian war, a small village in Macedonia is suffering from it's own ethnic division. A film in three parts, that leaves you scratching your head, sad about humanity, and a little hopeful for what we _can_ do if we want to. Excellent all around!

4.3.2.1 (2010)
Mickey from Doctor Who directed a movie. And what a dumb movie it was! The intertwining, or diverging...? stories of 4 friends over the course of 3 days. Also something about blood diamonds? #1 (I don't remember their names) had an abortion and now her mom and everyone hates her. Or at least she thinks that. #2 Goes to New York for an audition and is taken advantage of by some shady guys. #3 is a lesbian. #4 has to go to work because her sister has some very important dates to go to. They all have a connection to those diamonds in some way. In the end nothing really happens, except "friendship is magic" or some shit. It had it's moments of hilarity. It's one of those bad movies that sucks you in and you can't look away. Also, Eve (the rapper), Kevin Smith (the director) and Mandy Patinkin (the avenger) have cameos in this film for some reason. I can't say it was good, but I can't say it wasn't enjoyable.

11:14 (2003) /I sense I theme this week/ ATM pick.
Again, a bunch of intertwining stories, from different characters' perspectives. A bunch of unlikable people do a bunch of questionable stuff. Some end up dead. Some end up in handcuffs. Some end up with no dick. A better film than 4.3.2.1. Better made, better stories, better intertwining. The cast is great. It wasn't as fun as I though it would be, though. Hated the music! I can't say it was bad, but I can't say it was enjoyable.

Watched the first few episodes of Stranger Things' new season. I like this kind of show and story, so I'm enjoying it. I like how they've continued the story. Also they acknowledged (or made fun of) some of the derivativeness of season one in a short scene, which I kind off liked. Dartanian was cute, until he wasn't. More next week, if I don't forget the whole thing by then.

EDIT: For more Stranger Things things. Millie Bobby Brown was the stand out last season, but who knew this kid playing Will was so good at the acting (well, the people who cast him probably). I'm very impressed with his acting so far!

Hey Mina! I didn't forget you don't worry.

I think the thing with Napoleon is the brand of humour it represent. It's very absurd and I love it.

1922 and Automata: I also love your humour, it's funny!

Havent seen yours.

Thanks for not forgetting me, SK!

I guess I go more for the snarky humour, than absurd (if that wasn't clear before lol). Napoleon was still enjoyable enough, though.

My humour is an acquired taste sometimes, so I'm glad you're enjoying my nonsense :)

Brut Champagne is also an acquired taste, Mina, but one worth acquiring. Like you are.

Stranger Things 2: im loving it as much as the first...only up to ep 5...good stuff! Toothless is the best!!

Hard Candy: possible pedo adult lures an underage girl to his home for 'fun and games...'
It goes very badly for him
excellent performances...

The Walking Dead: following the comic 'Negan War arc quite nicely...as usual TWD seems not to understand how firearms work but lets let that slide...And whos cooler than big Jerry!?!

reply

Wrong threah but okay...

Hard Candy I liked too. The story is good but, as you said, it's the performance that made it really good.
