What did you watch this week& (10-01/10-07)

With a busy week at work and the hockey season that began, I didn't watch a lot this week.

Terminator 3 Rise of the machines (2003 DVD): Overall, an average and enjoyable action movie with acceptable special effects and mediocre acting. But I just don’t like the silliness and crappy one-liners from our beloved robot. 5.5-6/10

XXX: Return of Xander cage (2017 Netflix): I never saw the original and never felt the need to see it. The sequel is the only movie from Ice Cube I never saw. I don’t really know why I watched this one but it ended up being a good parody of the James Bond tradition; kick ass, get the girl and look dope while doing it. Seeing Michael Bisping and Tony Jaa together was a real treat and Donnie Yen was at his best. I liked the characters, I laughed and the action was not bad at all. It’s nothing ground-breaking but it’s a positive surprise for me. 6.5/10

Super Troopers (2001 Netflix): I didn’t really enjoyed that one the first time but it was a bit better on rewatch. There is a few good moments and I laughed a few times but Im not a fan of the cast. 6/10

Geralds Game...i was loving it until the last 10 minutes (no spoilers but it took a turn that i thought was cheap and out of place) Gugino's acting was great and she looks super sexy

Curb Your Enthusiasm...hilarious return to greatness by Larry and company...so glad the whole gang is back

I thought EH was kinda goofy. I remember being surprised that they were able to cast so many good actors (Neill, Fishburne, Quinlan)

reply

Haven't seen'em yet

Dark Skies "homaged" so many different movies, but I had fun watching it.

This week I watched:

Paris, Texas (1984) 10/10
Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016) 7/10
Pet Sematary (1989) 8/10
Blade Runner (1982) 8/10 (rewatch)
Rings (2017) 3/10

reply

Loved it
I gotta rewatch it for this Halloween!

reply

I gave Rings a 7/10 thought it was pretty good

reply

Pet Sematary: 7.5/10 Great atmosphere and good acting

Blade Runner: Saw it for the first time last year and loved it. 9/10

reply

Did you see the new Blade Runner?

reply

Yes, I saw the new Blade Runner this week. It was excellent, even better than the original. I rate it 9/10.

reply

A relatively quiet week for me as I was watching too much sports ( hockey and baseball)

War For The Planet Of The Apes (2017) - The title is some what misleading as the apes do very little fighting in this one. A decent story line to wrap up the trilogy. 7/10

Chinatown (1974) - Last week I gave this a 8.5 in response to SK but I hadn't seen it years so I had another look. The movie is great at capturing the film-noir spirit. Great characters and you have to love Nicolson's character - you just know he was going to get screwed in the end. The ending was a bit unsatisfying but it was meant to be. 8.5/10

71 (2014) - The movie is set in 1971 Northern Ireland during The Troubles. A British soldier is separated from his regiment and is forced to survive in hostile IRA territory. This is a very stark somewhat brutal movie where all sides look bad. A very well done anti [war movie. 8/10.

reply

Haha, the hockey season cuts into your movie viewings too huh? Im for the Habs (MTL) What about you?

Chinatown: I always like when we have common movies from one week to another.

71 looks good

reply

habs fan also but it could be a long season

The standout film for me was Notes on a Scandal. I tuned into this while channel surfing, expecting to become bored, disinterested. Was I ever surprised ! It held my attention with every passing moment.

The key was Judi Dench's mesmerizing performance as a Machiavellian spinster. No wonder she has won so many acting awards.

reply

I had the same feeling while watching this movie. Dench was great.

reply

I had never heard from it. Thanks
