Hi,raiders...this monday i arrived at work with 3 minutes after the shift started,because the mini - bus that is transporting us was late.The driver's excuse was that the car engine didn't start.Later that day,he told me that he didn't start the car since last friday...and we had low temperatures in that period...i think between 0 and 3 degrees celsius.Now,i have a question for those of you who own a car : can low temperatures affect an engine car...i mean don't start at the first key?

Cold temperatures can affect car engines, but unless the engine is already having problems, temperatures like this shouldn't be a problem. Where I live it's generally around -18 C (0 degrees F) when folks start having problems with starting. But I also understand that vehicles using diesel can be more troublesome.

Low temps coagulate the fluids (make the various fluids very heavy and thick)
They also strain the starting system on older/neglected vehicles
Your bus driver should know better
Vehicles require more attention in low temps
Hope your boss didnt beat you up too much over 3 minutes!

As people here have said, Low temps are hard on an engine if not regularly in operation.

I certainly hope you didn't have a problem being 3 minutes late. That shouldn't be a big problem...
NOT when you are relying on a bus to transport you.
3 minutes is not that huge of an issue, is it??????

3 minutes is big in certain jobs/cities
Ive been late twice (a total of 8 minutes) in my 16 1/2 years at my job and heard all about it both times
Lateness is nearly inexcusible in NYC and chronic lateness brands you a bum and gets you fired for cause
I hope his bus driver wrote him a note...there is no leeway at the office and Croft got screwed for no reason

I understand chronic lateness. I don't tolerate that either, when people are constantly late. They get three passes from me and then they are OUT! It is the same with calling in "sick". It is our policy.
However, when one is reliant on public transportation, this is not always their fault. They got up, went to the usual place to catch that bus. Things occasionally happen. It just seems that 3 minutes isn't too big of a deal. Of course, I guess it does depend on the sort of job you have. If you are keeping people waiting and costing the company a whole lot of money, even 3 minutes can be a liability.

You nailed it with that last part
I get to work at least 45-60 minutes early cuz i CANNOT be late
I drive but my co-workers who train/bus/ferry into the job must show proof of massive commuter disruption (usually a news article)
to be excused punishment
There is NO LOVE here in NY...all about the $$$
But i get it

Well that is bullshit!
If youre gonna leave come to America-we have tons of unions
If you have a degree you will fit right in...you could also get a good degree in two years or so (but you will bust your ass earning it-fair warning bro!)
I think you would prosper in many places here..
Or Canada as Hownoes was trying to recruit you some time ago-youd fit well in either place...

I'm with Shogun on this! Only, I'd advise you to go to Canada. I believe they get better heath care and medicine doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. LOL!

0 to 3 degrees celsius should not affect an engine. I lived in Northern Ontario for five years.

we dont do celsius or decimal here in 'the States (cuz fuck that) but it sounds pretty cold
If under 30 F there is a big difference in performance
Tire pressure, fluidity, springs and shocks tighten up, body even creaks and grinds more...we gotta winterize 'em under 30 F

0 Celsius = 32 Fahrenheit which is the freezing point of water.

The greatest demand in sub-zero temps, is placed upon a vehicle's battery, not the engine. That's why, when purchasing one, the customer needs to be aware of its CCA ( cold cranking amps ), one of its most important features and how it's relative to his environment.

The short answer is yes. Up north above the Arctic Circle, some folks never turn their engines off in the winter because they would never be able to start them again.
