So if you knew that a movie could be made into a television show and not fail miserably or kill what you think of the movie.. basically if it would succeed, which do you think would be interesting to see made?
I think Captain Fantastic would make a good television show. It was such a good movie and seems like there would be a lot of story lines they could make up.
I consider the US version original because there is literally nothing else like it on tv and once I'm caught up on the series, I'll watch the UK version too.
I honestly think Salt would have made a good TV Show. I love it as a movie and think it's perfect the way it is but there was definitely possibilities for more stories / sub-plots. I think it could have worked without it seeming too dragged out.
Although, it's not likely Angelina would have starred in it if it were a TV Show so that would be a major disappointment.
Obviously it would be great if Jolie starred in a TV Series version but with that being not likely - I think Alicia Vikander could pull it off. I would quite like to see how she portrays Lara Croft first though.
I also think Margot Robbie could portray Evelyn Salt pretty well. TV Show aside, If the Salt sequel goes on without Angelina, i'd quite like to see Alicia or Margot play Evelyn.
(Although, by then, it might seem that Vikander is just recycling Jolie's roles)
I should probably think on this some more, but I think most book adaptations would be better suited for television, just because you have more time to tell the story.
Matt Ross wrote and directed it. It was his first time directing, not sure about writing. He is from American Horror Story and Big Love. (That I know him from). I don't know why I was so surprised to hear it was him that directed it, maybe because I usually hate his characters on television. (Sign of a good actor right?)
This is a good question.
I can think of two movies of the past that have already been made into successful TV shows. The movies were hits and so were the TV shows.
Mash, with Alan Alda and gang
The Odd Couple, Tony Randall and Jack Klugman.
I'll have to think about your question though. I have seen so many movies. Some probably could make very interesting shows. I'll get back to you.
I'll take your word for it on both because believe it or not I think I am the only person who never saw Fargo. Crazy right? it got so much hype and I don't even have it spoiled on me yet. I saw psycho but didn't see Bates Motel. Are there any you would like to see done but haven't been?
Yeah, strange right. I'm glad I'm not alone. All I know about it is Frances McDormand, I think Steve Bulushi, snow and maybe a wood chipper?
I guess it has to be put on that "watch before I die" list I don't really have. :)
"Watch before I die" list - 😜. Perhaps I'll make a list of things to watch someday when I'm really bored. I like Frances McDormand. Maybe it was the wood chipper that turned me off. Having not watched it means I don't understand jokes that refer to it, either. Oh well.
I hear ya. I absolutely loved her in Burn After Reading, and that movie. Too funny.
Yeah, now I think I might watch it tonight to figure out this woodchipper thing. Obviously someone must go into it? haha. I have no idea.
I don't get the jokes either, and I have no idea if Billy Bob was good casting for the TV show either.
I loved the movie, The Odd Couple with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau You should check that out.
As for Mash, hownos is right. It's a bit darker, but very funny. A bit different from the TV series. I have always liked it, but I like most Robert Altman films.
The Apartment is one of my favorites.
Have you seen Jack Lemmon in Days Of Wine and Roses? It's pretty hard to watch. He plays an alcoholic. A really good movie.
No, but I had no idea he did anything serious. I was confusing the movie with another. Isn't there a movie where a man and woman share an apartment but never see each other? Seems to me it was famous, but I can't for the life of me think of it right now and google wasn't even my friend on this one.
Thanks so much for the suggestions, I will seriously check it out. I think Grumpy Old Men was what I pictured from he and Mathiau as since that's what was popular when I was young. That would be like looking at the Bucket List (not that it wasn't good) and thinking that was Nicholson and Freedman at the top of their game. Certainly not. He was super good in Glen Garry Glen Ross though too.
I bet there are tons of movies that are great that he has been in. Thanks for the suggestion.
While Lemmon has been in many comedys, he isn't always known for those roles.
did you never see The China Syndrome?
There is a great version of A Long Day's Journey Into Night on YouTube starring Jack Lemmon.
He really isn't just known for his wonderful comedic roles. He really was incredible in his dramatic roles as well.
Check out this man's filmography. You would be amazed.
Crazy I had no idea. I did check out his filmography earlier when you mentioned him, but not in depth or anything but there looked to be lots of his movies that I hadn't even heard of. Feel bad I wrote him off to just being in comedy roles. Classic comedys are not always my fave. I haven't seen the 2 you mentioned either so I must check that out. Thanks :D
Funny how you can take a chance on one movie like I did with the Apartment, and you find lots of others. I really thought I was going to hate that one, so I'm glad I gave it a chance and was wrong.
I love finding new films and I especially love discovering actors in a new light.
I am so glad that you liked The Apartment. It opened up new doors where Shirley MacClaine is concerned. She was fantastic in that movie as well!
She also seems to be someone I supposedly have looked like for MANY years.
I never quite saw it, BUT, I can't complain over the comparison.....
I always thought that she was kind of cute. You can't go wrong with Shirley !
I was actually thinking how pretty she was while I was watching that last night. So quite the compliment. :)
The Children's Hour has got to be one of my all time fave movies and I was blown away by her in that. That was the first movie i had ever seen of her in her "younger years" as well and was totally impressed. I was wondering if she had gotten one role because of the other.
OMG! Wasn't The Children's Hour interesting? I will say that it was groundbreaking for it's time. I still think it is good, but in a different way now. It is so sad to think that there were times when homosexuality was against the law, and later, something to be ashamed of.... hidden!
Our son is gay, and he is happily married to the nicest sweetest man. They have been together for 20 years now. I thank GOD that he never had to go through the pain that others have had to go through.....
Oh, I know that there are still homophobes out there still, but not quite the way it once was.
I cry every time I see the ending of The Children's Hour.
I also find it overly dramatic by today's standards.
You may butt in any time you please!
I have actually seen These Three. I think it's interesting that Miriam Hopkins was in both films. In These Three, she played the role that Shirley MacClaine played in The Children's Hour.
In The Children's Hour, She played the role of Shirley's stupid aunt.
"The later version closer resembled the Hellman Play. I think. :)"
That's right.
What was the big secret the little girl told her aunt in the first one that was white washed? Was it that the boyfriend stayed over night? I can't remember.
I agree that it probably couldn't be made today.....
UNLESS it was a period piece. That could be great.
They wouldn't have to pussy foot around the subject. Somehow, I think it could be one interesting film.
The New Odd Couple was a hit? I had no idea. I didn't think it made it back season 1. Goes to show what I know. You are talking about the one with Matthew Perry? Just curious. :)
I didn't think it was a hit.
The series starring Tony Randall and Jack Klugman was a hit though.
there were three Odd Couple TV series, actually. One had two black guys playing Felix and Oscar.
Daisy, I have to ask you how old you are....
You have been either WAY too busy to have followed most of this stuff..... OR?????
You are very young and you still haven't seen a whole lot of classic films and TV shows.
Maybe it is a bit of both. No problem!
It really doesen't matter what your age may be.
You are here on MovieChat!!!!!!
We are here to LEARN!!!!!!
I come here each day just to find out new things.
I'm going to try and watch it tonight. I was going to go out to the movies, but I think I'm getting cancelled on because my friend had to work later than thought. Oh well.
There are some movies I would like to see as tv shows...
300 - TV series is about world building. And with GoT being such a runaway success, a 300 tv show is the perfect competition. Better than Vikings and, dare I say it, even better than LoTR. It has sex, blood, decapitations, historical fantasy badass warmongers, insanely large war elephants, ninjas, etc.
Man from UNCLE - The movie version was nothing special and deservedly bombed, but it actually was not that bad. It might be better as a tv series. Much more time to explore the characters and the world building. It should have more comedy and action scenes. Think of it as a tv version of (cold war era) Kingsman.
Baby Driver - One of the more recent movie that was good and feels refreshing. I would like to see more conflicts and intricacies of Baby and his boss character. It can even be made as episodic tv show like in the good old days with heist of the week, showing more ridiculous heist plots and increasingly ludicrous car actions in each episode.
I did not know that. Thank you. I thought it was based on a comicbook. I checked Wikipedia and turned out the comicbook is the one that was based on the tv series. My bad.
Thanks. I still think it's a good idea to make a new Man from UNCLE tv series. Just make it more Kingsman than Bond. Oh, and while we're at it, please MGM, stop making Craig Bond. It just doesn't work anymore. Move on.
The Man From UNCLE WAS a TV series, in the 1960s, created by Ian Fleming and starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum. It was miles better than that shitty movie.
And 300 as a TV series has already been done. It was called Spartacus.
