Which decade had the best films?

Based on your own personal opinion and preferences - which decade would you say had the best films?

or even more specifically - which year had the best films?

I personally love movies from the 80s. All very feel-good films with originality.
I don't think there's any specific year i could pick.

reply

Late '80s to early '90s... cheesy and fun.

reply

I have watched so many films.... from the 20's right up to present day over the years, although not as many of the recent ones. I'll get there though. I personally feel that there have been great movies and not so great over the decades. It would be hard to pick any decade.

reply

Same here. Every decade has its winners and losers. Everyone has their preferences, so if horror is your thing, you're likely to choose whichever decade had the most good horror flicks. If you like musicals you may be more like to pick the 40s or 50s.

reply

Same for me. Impossible to pick a decade, let alone a year, with the best films.

reply

I'll tell you one thing I love about 80s films: you can see what's going on! They were generally lit very brightly and had vivid, full color palettes, unlike the more recent trends of ultra dark images with washed-out colors. They also did not employ the dreaded "shaky cam" style, which I hate with a passion.

reply

Count me as another person who hates shaky cam and dark images. I also dislike it when someone is singing (as in a televised concert, for example) and instead of focusing on the performer, they bounce to a different camera shot about every five seconds - to the audience, to a shot from above, to one from front row level, to side view, to a shot from the balcony, etc., etc. I like to see mostly their faces as they sing.

reply

True and a good point, although as I remember it the overly dark screen films started in the 2000s. Can't stand the shaky cam fad either. *Maybe* it was used well in one or two of the first films, objectively speaking. Not that I liked it then either.

reply

I didn't saw many old movies...sorry if i can't be more helpfull.

reply

I prefer movies from the 90s, but the mid to late 80s are great as well.

reply

From what I own, the 80's dominate the other decades (mostly for Horror). Maybe it's because I spent my early teens during the 80's but that whole decade seemed to do all things right. Well, maybe not the clothes, lol.

My opinion is that the worst decade for films would be our current one. I have less than 40 movies owned for 2010-2017.

reply

I agree that the current decade has probably been the worst for films. I'm basing my opinion from the 50s onward because i haven't really seen many movie pre 50s but from 2010-2017 it seems every 2nd movie is either a remake or similar to other movies released around the same time.

There have been some very decent movies this decade that i have really enjoyed and would recommend but i think many are lacking originality. It would be great to have more creative and unique ideas instead of remake after remake (Although some remakes are great too!)

reply

I can't say it's the best decade but a lot of my favorites are from the 50's.
With 53, 54 and 57 the top ones.

I'd say the 1930's, Hollywood's "Golden Age". This decade includes the following films, all of which have an IMDB rating
of 8.0 or higher:

Gone With The Wind 8.2
The Wizard of Oz 8.1
M 8.4
City Lights 8.6
Modern Times 8.5
It Happened One Night 8.2
All Quiet on the Western Front 8.1
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington 8.2
The Adventures of Robin Hood 8.0
Bringing Up Baby 8.0
My Man Godfrey 8.1
The Thin Man 8.1
The Women 8.0
Duck Soup 8.0
La Grande Illusion 8.1

There are also many more rated in the high 7's.

I agree with you, MovieMan. In fact it has been said 1939 was the year for the greatest movies. To name 5, but read the following articles:

Gone With The Wind

The Wizard of Oz

Mr. Smith Goes To Washington

Stagecoach

Of Mice and Men

Yes. 1939 is indeed considered the greatest year for Hollywood. And Stagecoach and Of Mice and Men are also classics.

PS Good articles, thanks.
