What did you watch this week (03/09-09/09)

Busy week for me so not a lot of movies.

DOA : Dead or Alive (2006 DVD) : I stayed away from this movie as long as I could but always was curious about it. Especially since I fell in love with Jaime Pressly in My name is Earl. The trailer is better than the film, that’s for sure. I wish it could at least have been a ‘so bad it’s good’ kind of movie but it’s not. Just a bad movie with a few moments of good fighting and one or two highlights. 3.5/10

The abominable Dr. Phibes (1971 DVD): ’’ A doctor, scientist, organist, and biblical scholar, Anton Phibes, seeks revenge on the nine doctors he considers responsible for his wife's death.’’ Strange and intelligent, weird and funny, creepy with a cool atmosphere and solid acting. I think that’s a good description for this film. The two investigators were fun to watch. The murders were even more fun. (Except the one with the rats on the plane) 7-7.5/10

The Chinese Zodiac (Sap ji sang ciu 2012 Bluray) : Those who follow this thread for a while now know that Im a loyal Jackie Chan fan but this one was a miss for me. It’s too childish, the story was too standard, the special effects were poor and it seriously lacks realism. Otherwise, it was colorful, the pace was good although it was a bit too long and the fight scenes were okay although there wasn’t enough of them. 5/10

Preacher Season 1 (DVD): I loved it. The Pilot was good but episode 6 (The Sundowner) was the best of all. The last episode left me with mixed feelings but I hope to find Season 2 on AMC.com because I can’t wait to continue this show.

I have three submissions of good movie entertainment :

A Bronx Tale --- an interesting collaboration of talent between the two leading stars. Chazz Palminteri wrote it and De Niro produced and directed it. It's obvious both actors were in their element with this story of a boy growing up too fast in a tough, predominantly Italian/American NY neighborhood in the 60's. 8/10

The China Syndrome --- just couldn't resist a rewatch of this great thriller of post Atomic Age lingering angst. Solid performances by Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas but Jack Lemmon was superb as a dedicated employee becoming progressively more conflicted with the subterfuge of his employer. 8/10

The General's Daughter --- A good whodunit which ultimately also becomes a very sad story. Travolta has some really great wisecracking lines in this and there's a memorable scene of some good banter between him and James Woods. 8/10

reply

ABT: I actually watched the trailer for this a few days ago and added it to my list.
The CS: Looks good. Lemmon is such a great actor, I never disliked a movie with him in it.
The GD:Was a bit young when I saw it, due for a rewatch. From what I remember it was a good movie indeed.

reply

Glad we're on the same page with these. I admit I'm favorably biased with my ratings.

reply

We are together on Bronx Tale and China Syndrome.

I am biased in the opposite direction when it comes to John Travolta.
I gave it a chance but didn't really like General's Daughter. Even with James Woods.

reply

Fair enough, dewey. I'm sure you've got your reasons.

In hindsight, I can see that I probably bumped up its rating a bit too high.

reply

To be fair I'm sure I already made up my mind before I saw it.
Not a big Travolta fan. I'm sure I rated lower than it deserves.

reply

I'm not either. I've liked him in some films and then, not in others.

reply

[deleted]

I saw Rememory - strange that no one mentions Dinklage's size

reply

Heathers is such a great movie. Christian Slater is incredible in this.

reply

I watched two movies this week...

Colossal (2016)
https://moviechat.org/tt4680182/Colossal
This is ten percent sci, twenty percent fi
Fifteen percent korean monster by the bye
Five percent action, fifty percent drama
And a hundred percent rom-com, cuz remember it's a chick-flick at heart

Wonder Woman (2017)
https://moviechat.org/tt0451279/Wonder-Woman
She is ten percent Cap, twenty percent Thor
Fifteen percent concentrated power of Vision
Five percent Hawkeye, fifty percent 'Ron-Man
And a hundred percent reason to remember DC

reply

I like those reviews. Keep up the good work! ;)

reply

Colossal: I must have forgotten what happened in that movie, 'cause that rom in the com went weird fast.

I like those reviews BTW!

reply

I didn't watch any movies in the last few weeks, but I watched several this week.

Identity (US, 2003)
A series of unfortunate circumstances causes a group of strangers to wind up at the same hotel on a stormy night, where a psychopath begins picking them off one by one. Sounds pretty generic, but there is an unusual twist to this one. Still, I wasn't very enamored with it. But that might be partly because I watched this movie on the same day I got some terribly bad news, which may have tainted the experience. Others may like it better.

House on Haunted Hill (US, 1999)
An eccentric amusement park mogul invites a group of strangers to a party at an abandoned former asylum which is said to be haunted, due to the torture and murders which had taken place in it. He offers each of them a million dollars if they spend the night and survive. This movie is a remake of a classic horror film from 1959, but far inferior to it; the only thing I liked about it was Geoffrey Rush, one of my favorite actors, who is also the main reason I watched it. For the life of me I can't understand why an actor of his caliber agreed to be in this.

Gamera (Japan, 1965)
Another Japanese monster movie about the dangers of nuclear weapons. In this one, a group of scientists are in the Arctic when a conflict occurs between American and Soviet aircraft in the area, resulting in an accidental nuclear explosion. The explosion releases a giant turtle monster from beneath the Arctic ice, which the Inuit call Gamera, as the scientists learn from a chieftain. After destroying the scientists' research ship, Gamera disappears back under the ice, later appearing again off the coast of Japan. Destruction ensues. It sounds a bit silly, but it was well-made and I quite enjoyed it.

To be continued.

Kaibutsu (Japan, 2013) [English translation: "Monster"]
This is kind of an unknown TV movie. Tired detective Kozai is looking forward to being reassigned away from murder cases, when he learns of a rising young political star named Dojima, who also happens to be a former suspect in a child abduction/murder case that Kozai investigated. Kozai knows he's guilty and is infuriated to see him getting away with it and succeeding in life, and takes it upon himself to bring him down. Kozai soon comes across a woman who claims to also have been abducted by Dojima as a child, and he arranges a confrontation between them to expose his crimes. In the process Dojima is accidentally killed, and Kozai is forced to take extreme measures to cover up what happened, enlisting the help of a sociopath to dispose of the body. This sets off a process that leads everyone involved down a road that brings out the demons in all of them.

My Cousin Vinny (US, 1992)
Two college boys from New York end up in the wrong place at the wrong time and are arrested for murder while passing through Alabama because they match the description of the culprits. Facing the death penalty if convicted, one of them calls in his lawyer cousin, Vinny, to defend them, unaware that Vinny's only been practicing for 6 weeks and has absolutely no experience in court. Vinny, played brilliantly by Joe Pesci, comes down with his fiance and their New York manners and he proceeds to make a mess of the entire situation, butting heads with the judge and continually flubbing the defense. I can't really say why this movie works, but it does. It's both funny and clever. One of the best movies I've seen in a while.

reply

Identity: I liked it. Great atmosphere, cool characters and the twist was good. The way your learn it was strangely executed though. 7.5/10

House on haunted hill: Im not a big fan of the genre but this is one of the 'less worst'. 6/10

My cousin Vinny: been too long. Way too long.

reply

I would say Identity was above average.
It is a story that has been done several times before.

Vinny is very good. I thought it very original and funny.

The Confession-L'aveu -1970-Yves Montand, Simone Signoret,- Based on a true story. In the movie a vice minister of
foreign affairs is put in prison. He is mentally and physically tortured as well as are several of his colleagues.
The Soviets are looking for them to admit to treason. This an extremely powerful film. It gives a great glimpse
into what happened during this time. I also think it is probably as real today as it was back then.-8.5

The Birds- Hitchcock, what can you say-7.5

King Rat-1965- George Segal, Tom Courtenay. Takes place in a POW camp in WW2. George Segal is the man who
can make things happen. Buying, selling and dealing with the enemy. Always been a favorite of mine.7.5

Man Who Knew Infinity-2015- Dev Patel, Jeremy Irons-True story of Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
Possibly one of the greatest minds ever to have lived. Takes place in the early 1900's. The relationship between
Ramanujan and Professor G.H. Hardy played by Irons. The suffering and racism that Ramanujan had to endure.
A lot of his theories are still used to this day. Excellent-8

Patterns-1956-Van Heflin, Everett Sloane, Ed Begley . A terrific movie about the cutthroat world of big business. Even
back then. A new man is brought aboard to take the place of a founder of the company. -8.5

Ballad of Nayrama-Narayama bushikô-1983-Japanese. Takes place in the 19th century in a small village where on
their 70th birthday people make the journey to Narayma. Which is basically a mountain where they go to die.
At 70 the main character still has all her teeth. She is looked upon as evil because with all her teeth she would
be able to eat more food and take food from the village. This is tradition. In order for the people to survive this
tradition has been established. Still relevant today. -8.5

reply

I would give The Birds an 8.5/9.0

reply

I really don't like rating Hitchcock movies. It's so hard rating one better than another one.
I don't know that I've seen one I don't like. They are all very good. IMO

reply

I watched Strangers on a Train last nite - never tire of it.

reply

I'm with you.

reply

Man who knew infinity looks very interesting.
Ballad of Nayrama do too.

reply

Man Who Knew Infinity is very good.
Especially if you like true stories and what people had to overcome.

Ballad of Nayrama looks like it all filmed on a stage. It kind of reminded me of a ancient folk tale.

reply

Three generations in my family that have seen The Birds. All scarred by it for life.

reply

Are you included in one of these generations ?
It's pretty common here. Sure you don't want to come over ?

reply

Huh? Are you implying some sorf of insest?

I don't know a better way to put it, so you figure it out, but yes, I'm included, not in an insest-y kind of way.

The Birds is still terrifying.

reply

No, what I meant is I thought maybe the scarring stopped with your generation.
That it didn't scare you. Which I now know was incorrect. Me wrong-imagine that.

Then I meant that these kind of bird attacks are common over here.
Happens all the time. You just get used to it after while.

reply

[deleted]

Ha !
I read it again. I realize it wasn't very clear but don't know where that came from.
If I were you I would be ready at any time to click the report button on me.
Of course this is just a suggestion not a demand by any means.

reply

[deleted]

It's inevitable.

Love is on the way
I can see it in your eyes
Let's give it one more try tonight baby

reply

We've gone too far with the tomfoolery if I read insest into that comment. My bad.

I don't know if it's a "my g-g-generation" thing, or a "me" thing, but it was scary. I think nature gone wrong would always be scary on some level. Because it is a universal thing, across different time periods and cultures. It could also very much be /and is/ a real thing, anywhere.

So on that level, it is a more universal and timeless theme, than Psycho for example. Still a great, well crafted film, but not as scary anymore. Just as we no longer find toilets flushing on screen to be scandalous, I think we are a little desensitised to that sort of maniac story /especially with all those true crimes shows being much more shocking/. Whereas various critters attacking you, I think that's hardwired into our psyche to be instictively afraid of.

I don't know if you can make a teenager today sit down and watch it, without protest of "how old it is" and how "stupid the effects look" /unless they're interested in film, that is/.

reply

No worries Mina. Even I have a line. Although slightly askew still a line.

I don't think it's just your generation. Like you said nature gone wrong can be scary. Except
maybe The Happening. That's a whole other matter.
Every time I look out my window and see a large group of birds in my yard I still think about
this movie. You always think "what if". Or if you see a bunch of spiders you always think
of Arachnophobia.
We have become completely numb to movies like Psycho. Even the the next level movies
like Saw or Hostile. We see enough of those things everyday in the news.

I wouldn't think that kids of today would get the same kind of feeling as we did watching it for
the first time. It wouldn't have the same affect. IMO

reply

It can be scary when made well. The Happening is great, but not for any good reason.

I do the same with the birds congregating in the trees around my house in the fall. They get very loud, and very scary...

Saw and Hostile are so over the top, I can't see how they're scary. They're more disgusting in my view.

I don't think it'd have the same effect either, and I'm less than 20 years removed from the current generation. They're too heavily influenced by CGI for one thing IMO.

Twin Peaks The Return. It was typical Lynch: brilliant, tense, mysterious, unexpected, and for every question they answered, they posed three more. I LOVED it, and hope we get a season four, hopefully not 25 years from now!

😎

"What year is this?"

reply

that's the problem with Twin Peaks - there will never be answers - it just goes around and around.

reply

I know that drives some people crazy (me too sometimes), but that is what I love about it, the never ending mystery and never ending questions. Call me crazy, but I do love it so.

😎

"I AM the FBI."

reply

I loved the atmosphere don't get me wrong but I need answers at some point.

reply

I hear and understand you, and I believe most people would agree with you. I think perhaps you have to have a slightly different sensibility to enjoy the constant questions with no answers. It's the mystery that I love. As the late, great Alfred Hitchcock would say "What you don't see is more freightening than what you do see."

So are you rooting for a season four, or are you done with it?

😎

"He's dead."

reply

I haven't watched any of the 2017 reboot - if I watch one episode then I will be drawn in again.

reply

Oh okay. That's probably a good idea because I believe you would be drawn in again. I actually subscribed to Showtime just to watch it, but then that's why they make chocolate and vanilla.

😎

"What year is this?"

reply

did you go back and watch the original ??

reply

I bought the DVD Box Set of the original several years back, and watched it. So I did not have to wait 25 years like most of the fans did.

A Room With a View-1985-Maggie Smith, Helena Bonham Carter. Stellar cast and story highlight this movie.
Romance, comedy, drama this movie has it all. -7.5

So Big-1953-Jane Wyman, Sterling Hayden. Story of a woman raising her son with hardships after her husband dies. Laughs and tears.-7

Trouble With Harry-1955-John Forsythe, Shirley MacLaine- A Hitchcock comedy. A good story with a great cast-7.5

Love Nest-1951- A disappointing comedy drama about a couple who buy a run down apartment building. Marilyn
Monroe has a very small role-6

Beau Brummel-1954-Stewart Granger, Elizabeth Taylor, Peter Ustinov- Story of an officer who befriends the prince of Whales. He becomes famous for brining a certain type of trousers to the UK. Not horrible.-6

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance-1962-James Stewart, John Wayne, Vera Miles-Lee Marvin
One of my favorite westerns of all time. Although it could be argued it more about the end of the old west.
Some consider this one of Fords best if not the very best.-8.5

I haven't seen Phibes for awhile but that sounds about right.
Preacher season 1 is awesome. Almost finished season 2.

reply

You watched some great movies this week.

I love A Room with a View. Daniel Day Lewis is such a chameleon and he's a perfect Cecil. Helena Bonham Carter was so beautiful in that movie. Maggie Smith and Judy Dench are delightful to watch.

I just rewatched The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. It's such a good movie. Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne and Lee Marvin! Lee Marvin is so evil in this, with the whip!

reply

They said John Ford specifically wanted Marvin for this role.
He was known for being extremely hard on his stars including John Wayne.
When it came to Lee Marvin he did nothing. No berating or intimidating.
Nothing but respect. He probably was scared to death of him.
Lee Marvin plays an excellent bad guy.

reply

Only seen Trouble With Harry. I agree with you. It's a fun little film. 7.5/10
