What did you watch this week? (09/07-15/07)

Bonjour tout le monde!
Hi everyone!

Don't forget to comment on my movies too guys.

Mine:

Stardust (2007 Bluray): It's the rating of 7.7 and the reviews that got me into buying this one. Well, I didn't like the first hour of the film. There was a little bit of everything but nothing really good. I found some scenes to be just plain stupid. The second half gradually got better ( as did the main character's haircut) and in the end, I found that the whole story wrapped up pretty well. The love story was too corny for me though. Also, the music was good but way too loud, the special effects were okay but not impressive and the casting was good but the acting was average. 5/10

Road to perdition (2000 DVD): Now that was a well-made movie. It's beautiful, everything run smoothly, the music is amazing, the ambiance from the 30's is great and Tom Hanks, to my great surprise, pulled off the role of a stone cold killer quite convincingly. Honourable mentions to Paul Newman, Daniel Craig and Jude Law who played three of the coolest bad guys I hadn't seen since a good while. 8/10

Get out (2017 DVD): This one became an instant favourite of mine. Can't believe I never heard of it before. I loved every second, I was glued to my seat so much it was gripping and yet, it was fun and even funny at times. This first time director did the work of a master, the acting was phenomenal and the story manage to surprise even if partially predictable. I think some of the horror clichéd scenes were not really necessary as was the sound effects for the jump scares. Otherwise I didn't mind the minor script related flaws so much it was an amazing movie. 9/10

Suicide Squad (2016 DVD): Finally decided to buy it even tough the critics destroyed it. The dialogue was mostly execrable and the ending is one of the worst ever. The character I was the most anxious to see was the worst of them all: The Joker (Jared Leto). Apart from that, I enjoyed it as a mindless action movie. The soundtrack was great, the special FX and the zingy settings were good and the characters were interesting (except for the Joker.) 5.5-6/10

The Punisher (2004 Netflix): First, the casting: I thought Thomas Jane was a perfect choice, Ben Foster and the other big guy were good additions but John Travolta was a bad call. Then, the story ( a very intricate and elaborated one): A undercover agent goes on a revenge killing spree after his parents, his wife and his son are killed by bad guys. Honestly, I never expected this movie to be of any real value but always wondered about it. It was actually better than I thought it would be. I especially liked the scenes with his complex neighbours. 7/10

The Playaz court (2000 DVD): This is one of my favourite low-budget movies. I would like to share parts of the two reviews on Imdb:
1."For an extremely low-budget flick this work has all the elements of a mini-masterpiece. With two different sub-plots working together we watch how a typical game of basketball evolves into a murder-mystery and life altering experience. At first dismissing as another typical straight to video "hood flick" I appreciated the direction it took with using the basketball court as a way to work out internal family and neighbourhood problems. Things build quickly, violence ensues and in "Clue" whodunit style fingers start flying all directions. Now the trick here is the basketball COURT ends up a makeshift justice COURT of peers. Justice will be served but the questions of who, what, where, when, and why must be answered under a tense barrage of Q & A."
2. "I too, usually take one look at a film's cover and decide there and then whether it's worth my time or not. Thankfully, I gave the cover of 'The Playaz Court' a second look, and discovered it's far from the 'rap star does movie' clone I presumed it would be.Gritty, Compelling, Fantastically performed..."The Playaz Court" is a refreshing surprise. And despite the fact some of the screenplay comes across a little hammy, it's nothing short of damn entertaining."
My rating: 6.5/10

Ojka (2017 Netflix): A unique film, although we can clearly feel the director's touch, with a unique story and a quirky vibe. I would say that it's somewhere between Babe and Schindler's list. I am not a fan of movies with a CGI'd main character but this is as good as it can get. 7/10

Hi, Stone!

Mine this past week:

Varsity Blues -- a generally entertaining although sometimes far-fetched look at small town Texas culture where high school football is sacrosanct. The best aspects were the cinematography in the games sequences and a standout performance by Jon Voight as an egocentric, ruthless, despicable coach. 6/10

Blood Father -- a machismo laden Mel Gibson action vehicle wherein he looks very solid, rugged for his age and delivers nicely. Good escapism, kept me engaged, which is what I was in the mood for that day. 6.5/10

Babel -- This movie was spellbinding to me, true to life. I mentioned previously that I really like this type of storytelling, where seemingly random lives somehow intersect and collide. This epitomizes that style. 8/10

Of yours, I've seen both Road to Perdition and The Punisher, more than once. I agree that Road is a grimly atmospheric, quality film. As far as The Punisher, again, machismo laden escapism.

reply

Can't remember varsity blues it's been too long but I'd be down to rewatch it someday.

Babel seems to be a polarized movie but I'm with you. Gave it a 7.5 but due for a rewatch too. Maybe this week...

reply

Oooh shhhit, it's great isn't it !?

reply

I have spent the whole week re-watching all 6 seasons of Game Of Thrones in prep for tomorrow and Its my first time re-watching the series and man this is amazing, there are so many things and points I missed the first time around and damn is season 4 good, only problem is I haven't had time to watch anything else

reply

Someone else did the same exact thing last week. Personally, I watched season one but didn't feel like investing the time for the others.

reply

yer I had a friend like this, they couldn't get invested in the show. Everyone's tastes are different shame you didn't enjoy it though

reply

I did enjoy it, it just failed to hook me up. The worst is that I read a lot of fantasy novels in my life and still reading them. ( dragon lance, forgotten realms, The demon cycle (at book 3 right meow))

reply

If that's the case Stonekeeper, I mean the part about liking fantasy novels, please give Game of Thrones another shot.

Road to Perdition: 9/10
Get Out: 9/10

For me this week:

Queen of the South Season 1: 7.5/10
The Big Sick: 9.5/10
I Love You Again: 7.5/10
Shadow of a Doubt: 10/10 (one of my favorite Hitchcock movies)
Castlevannia Season 1: 7/10

reply

Alright, thanks Dr.

reply

Did you see TMC has had Hitchcock on all month?
They also are showing his very early work including his silent movies.
I haven't seen a lot of his early work so I am really looking forward to watching these.

reply

I've been trying to keep an eye on that channel, hoping to catch Vertigo which you mentioned here.

reply

I didn't realize it until recently. Tonight they have Stage Fright and I Confess which I haven't seen in
forever. The DVR is becoming my favorite invention ever.

reply

Yes, I saw that and I did manage to set up some recordings but not having the time to watch it before the DVR starts deleting them. I have the best of intentions! I did watch The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes. Hitchcock was the best, wasn't he? God, those movies are so good. In a way, it was lucky they had the old studio system. Directors like Hitchcock were super productive, sometimes two or three a year. You'd never see a director doing that now. There's no way they'd be able to do it. I've never seen any of Hitchcock's silent movies. So I have that to look forward to. Thanks for the heads up.

reply

I think I recorded about 20 or so. So apparently I'll be watching them for next year.
I've really got an itch to watch his TV show again. I haven't seen it in decades.

BTW, How did your friend like the Avett Brothers at Red Rock ?

reply

Oh, she had a great time. A whole group of moms and daughters went. I guess there were some forest fires in Colorado recently so they didn't make all their plans but they loved the concert. Thanks for remembering.

reply

It always amazes whenever I see them, the different demographics I see at their shows.
From ages 5-70. The last show I saw there was a little girl who was dancing with her dad
and sitting on his shoulders. She knew every lyric to every song. . She knew more than me.
She had to be about 5 yrs old.
I almost started crying. (A manly cry of course). It was a beautiful thing to see.

reply

Yes, I understand, children are very precious in their "humanness". My feminine observation. Well, that band is so good, I think.

reply

They are a good band. I think. I'm sure they are not for everyone. At least they can bring
generations together. That's always a good thing.

reply

Road to Perdition is excellent, I saw it last year. I too was surprised how well Hanks did with that type of role.

I only watched one movie last week.

Samaritan Zatoichi (1968, Japan)
Part of the movie series of Zatoichi the blind swordsman. In this one, Zatoichi is tricked by a yakuza boss into killing an innocent man for non-payment of debts. It turns out what the boss really wanted was to force the man's sister, Sode, into prostitution. So Zatoichi, to make amends for his action, takes on the role of guardian for Sode, protecting her from the yakuza. There's a complex personal dynamic between them, being that she's dependent on her brother's killer for her own freedom. One of the better Zatoichi movies IMO. He doesn't come off as squeaky clean in this one, as he's shown to have a darker side and we're reminded that he is, after all, a yakuza himself, despite that he mostly fights other yakuza throughout the series.

Vertigo-1958 Jimmy Stewart, Kim Novak. Love this movie- 8

Signs-2002 After multiple viewings still like it-7.5

The Heiress-1949-Olivia de Havilland, Montgomery Clift, Ralph Richardson -directed by William Wyler
Story about a plain jane who gets wooed by a fortune hunter. Magnificent performances. -8

25th Hour-2002-Edward Norton, Barry Pepper, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rosario Dawson. Directed by Spike Lee.
About a man's last free night before he goes to prison. Something about this movie keeps me coming back-7.5

Neighbors 2-2016 -Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron - I wasn't expecting much but this was disappointing.
I enjoyed the first one. This had some laughs but very few.-5.5

Jimi Hendrix Legacy-2015- A documentary about his life and what happened after his death. Found out some interesting
details that I did not know. -6.5

Witness for the Prosecution-1957- Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich, Charles Laughton
One of my favorite movies of all time-9

Sk, the only one of yours I saw was Road to Perdition . I don't remember much but I think I liked it. So there's that.

reply

Vertigo I would give a 9/10 along with Witness for the Prosecution

reply

I loved Vertigo. The only thing that bothers me is the special effects. I know they were limited at that time.
It's not that I want all that CG crap. I thought it was a little cartoonish. Especially for Hitchcock.
Is there another movie of his that he had that kind of effects in?
Jimmy Stewart is my favorite actors of all time, but the scene with him in front of the spiral with the front of
his hair blowing around was too much for me.
I know it's petty but I just don't understand why Hitchcock would do that.

reply

Hey Godewey! I think Vertigo is in the masterpiece category. It's one of my favorites of all time even with Jimmy's head mysteriously floating head in the crazy spiral! It's a completely implausible story from top to bottom but it's done perfectly. The thing that is so striking for me is the style of this movie, especially the clothes. Jimmy Stewart's suit and Kim Novak's suit are impeccably tailored. It's such a visually pleasing movie. Plus, the story is great and it's in San Francisco.

I think Witness for the Prosecution is just about a perfect movie. SPOILER I honestly did not recognize Marlene Dietrich as that creepy lady the first time I saw it. Tyrone Power is just great in this. He looks like a harassed man. This is such a great movie!

I think you keep watching 25th Hour because it's a really good solid movie. Philip Seymour Hoffman is amazing in this. The entire cast is terrific. Spike Lee is such a good director. His movies feel like you're watching real people, nothing feels put on. He must be great with actors.

reply

I must re-watch 25th hour as I don't remember it being that good.

reply

What is up Dmack !! I do agree with you It is one of those movies. There are just a few things that have
always bothered me. I do agree it is implausible. Why would Judy even get involved with Scottie knowing what
she had done ? The hotel scene also bothers me. I don't always need things spelled out for me but that whole
scenario seems off. I'm sure Hitchcock did it on purpose.

I didn't recognize Dietrich either. Laughton and Lanchester's chemistry was incredible. I'm sure being married
to each other helped out.

Hoffman was really good in this. I thought all the actors were perfectly cast.

reply

Vertigo: Saw it for the first time last year and I liked it but expected a little bit more about it. 7/10

Signs: didn't see it since the theatre but it was all right. 6/10

25th hour: this one has everything for me to love it but somehow it didn't quite work the first time around but I plan to give it another try. 6/10 for
now
I'll look witness for the prosecution up

reply

I have no explanation of why I like 25th Hour so much. I don't think it was a "great" movie but I really like it.

A movie like Vertigo is tough. It has been built up so much that I can see why some people would not like it as much.
I am a huge fan of Stewart and Hitchcock. Not to mention Novak.
Somebody, I don't remember who, just recently voted it as the best movie of all time. Take that for what it's worth.

reply

a poll of critics in 2012 voted Vertigo the best movie of all time - the poll is done every 10 years

Re Signs, same here ! Wasn't Bo absolutely the cutest little girl in all of moviedom since Shirley Temple? And then there was the adorable relationship between her and protective older brother, Morgan.

reply

Bo was adorable. I know he had a purpose with the story he told .
I thought it was well done, kept me wondering and had plenty of slight subtle comedy.
The kind that happens in everyday life that not all people appreciate.

reply

Strike back, season 3.Anyone else saw this tv show?

reply

I had forgotten all about The Punisher. Good flick, but I agree with you that Travolta was a poor choice. I never like him as a bad guy for some reason.

reply

Yeah, except maybe in Broken Arrow

The Ward (2010)
Halloween (1978)
A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988)
A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989)
Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991)
Friday the 13th (1980)
You're Next (2013)
Baby Driver (2017)
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015)

I've seen bits and pieces of Stardust when my younger sister watched it several times, seemed like too much of a kids movie for me to watch. Road to Perdition is a decent gangster movie, though I found it dragged slightly and had a somewhat underwhelming final act. Jude Law is probably the stand out for me in that one. Suicide Squad was enjoyable, particularly as a fan of the Batman world in comics and animation, the extended cut definitely ironed out a few of the crinkles though it was undoubtedly still a flawed film and disappointing one since it could have been amazing. I'm looking forward to seeing Get Out, I've heard very positive things.

reply

Can you provide input on the last three movies you listed?

Thanks
