It's a less invasive way to get news than Facebook. If you only follow trusted sources and people who you really enjoy hearing from or about, it is an excellent way to get information. If there is a news break... type it into the search engine or use a hashtag and you will get real time stories and comments about that news. With Facebook you must use your real name or at least use a realistic sounding name... with Twitter you can call yourself anything. If you follow back advertising and spammy accounts then your experience might become less than ideal but if you choose wisely it is very efficient. I'd start with following 10 newspapers or magazines and 10 celebrities who you like and watch your timeline. If nothing shows up very often, add some more. If you don't like someone or find it uninteresting just unfollow. You can follow famous people in films, television, music, sports... you can follow journalists and politicians. It's only as good as who you choose to follow.

That's the key.

shareIt depends what you use it for but I fucking LOVE Twitter! I use it for interacting with people about horror films. You can use it for whatever you are interested in... just follow people who are into the same shit be it skydiving, knitting, rope bondage, voodoo or what ever.
You will always get off topic stuff coming through your notifications but if it is one same person just unfollow, mute or block.
I am following on my main account about 10k people and have 25k following me & even with that amount my timeline is still fully dominated with shit that interests me... also the people you interact with and retweet the most you get extra "in case you missed it" notifications so when you log in the first stuff you see goes by your history.
