What did you watch last week? (25/06-01/07)

Good morning ladies and gentlemen and welcome to another edition of this weekly thread. I don't know what's going on but it's raining since the month of May over here (canada, Quebec) and there's been floods and everything. So what do we do when it's depressingly ugly outside? we watch movies!

In Hell (2003 DVD): This JCVD prison movie is extremely dark, brutal and violent and that makes all its charm, because there really isn't anything else. Just raw rage and bitterness. It doesn't come close to Death warrant even though it has a better rating on Imdb. It's well executed, well acted but it's too much of your "typical prison story". 6.5/10

Can't hardly wait (1998 DVD): This was one of my favourite movies at the time and is still one of my favourite "teen party" movies. Lots of nostalgia watching this. It showcases what might be one of the greatest casting job ever done on earth. There is over 20 characters and you get to like or hate each one of them, even those with less then 5 mins screen time. This summer hit jump started so many careers it's nuts. Just great. 8/10

Hotel Rwanda (2004 DVD): I'm a fervent consumer of movies about African history and been wanting to see that one for a while now. I wanted to make sure to be in the right mood for it as I expected a gripping, terrifying and poignant tragedy. To my surprise, it actually felt light and easy. IMO, a story about a genocide cannot be too bright or else it just conceal parts of the truth. I understand that this is a story about the actual hotel and it ended well for some of them but every time something bad was going to happen in the movie, you realize a bit later that actually, it was all fine. And that happened a lot. Plus, what was I to fear with Nick Nolte's reassuring presence? Also, the 2 hours length felt longer to me as the movie seemed to take time to progress. Overall, it was well executed and the cast was solid but I just didn't get the big emotions I thought I was gonna have. 6.5/10

#Horror (2015 Netflix): I stumbled upon this by accident and the first minute got me curious so I kept watching. I now see that it has many bad reviews and a very low rating but to me it deserves a little more credit. Considering the budget, it was well done, I liked the settings, the atmosphere, the music and the acting was not THAT bad. I liked the blonde woman. I think each actor really pulled their heart out and did their best at tackling the serious subjects. I wouldn't recommend it but for me it was OK. Although I have to say that I fast-forwarded a few parts. (I recommend you watch the 56 seconds trailer though, it's hilarious.) 5/10

Everybody wants some (2016 DVD): Dazed and confused is one of my favourite movies so I was a bit anxious going into this one. I enjoyed it, it was fun and refreshing but there was no memorable moment. The story is like an harmless straight line with no high, no low, no curve, no hit and no reward waiting at the end of it. I, too, noticed some of the actors were too old for their roles but one of them is actually justified in the movie. Apart from that, the characters were cool. So the movie wasn't bad but it wasn't great...how we say that again? Oh, yeah, t'was good. T'was alright. 7/10

The impossible ( 2012 Netflix): The trailer was attractive enough for me to watch this. I thought it would be more intense with disaster action but it was actually more of an emotional drama/thriller. The acting was OK and everything else too. No major flaw, but I was just not in the mood. For the first 45 minutes it was fine but then they just ride the drama round and round with the same redundant sad and stressed pattern. Well, at one point I stopped feeling sad and started being anxious to watch something else. 5/10

Police Story: Lockdown (2013 Netflix): I don't think this addition to the franchise was really necessary. It has its moments and there's a few good action scenes but overall the story and acting felt outdated. 5.5/10

True Detective (2015) Season 2 - I put off watching S2 because of the mixed reviews - I finally binged it Friday and Saturday nights. It was disappointing - some good performances but the story line was a joke. Hard to believe that the mayor and a few cops from a small town had so much power over all of CA. The body count reminded me of the wild west. The last scene with Vince Vaughn in the desert was suppose to be profound - it made me laugh. 5.5/10

The Treatment (2014) - a Dutch language crime drama which was very well done. A very disturbing pedophilia story line and a tormented lead detective kept me enthralled. 8.5/10

The Eyes of My Mother (2016) - some people seemed to like this short horror film about a disturbed young woman growing up on a farm in Portugal. Jumps from one scene to the next with a lot of mayhem. A strange waste of time. 5/10

Hell (2011) - A French language post-apocalyptic movie - the earth is burning up and four people are trying to get to the mountains in hopes of finding water. They stumble upon a farm which seems like a sanctuary but it becomes clear that the owners of the farm have different uses for the four travelers. A well shot movie - very gritty. 8/10

The Host (2006) - A Korean monster movie with a cult following - way too much humor for me to like - I just didn't get it. 6/10.

A mixed week

Only saw The Host and liked it a lot. Loved the ambiance, the atmosphere and the actors. 7.5/10

I really liked The Impossible... but as you said, maybe it was just a mood thing.

I haven't posted much because I've made the mistake of catching up with Grey's Anatomy. I really liked the early seasons, and I wanted to be able to casually watch each week... so I binged five seasons in a row to catch up and they were mostly mediocre. Every once in awhile, a moving episode would come along to keep me going but overall I felt it was a waste. I used it more as background viewing while I was doing other things so I could justify the time investment.

I also saw Baby Driver in the theater which was excellent.

Finished Fargo and have been keeping up with Twin Peaks. Love both of those shows.

What I wouldn't give for some rain just about now. We've been hit with a heatwave, that's left me half-melted. Anywoo, Can't Hardly Wait is a favourite. I really liked it growing up, I rewatched it a few years back, and I still enjoy it! And the cast is just great!

The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond (2008)
Fisher, the daughter of a plantation owner, is back in town and ready to stir some trouble. Everybody hates her because her father killed a bunch of people. She sets her sights on poor Jimmy, and informs him that heā€™ll be her escort to all the fabulous parties sheā€™d be attending as a debutant (not that many invites arrive). Suits are bought; people are being cartoonishly evil; an old lady is euthanased; love is lost, or won, or somethingā€¦; and Tennessee Williams mustā€™ve gotten a lot of exercise in his grave, from all that spinning. This movie is mesmerisingly bad. The acting, the dialogue, the plot. And yet I couldnā€™t stop watchingā€¦ In fairness, there were a few moment, when I genuinely felt for the characters, but sadly, those were not enough for me to like it.

Blow Dry (2001) /rewatch/
A small town hosts a hairdresserā€™s championship. Old rivalries are revived, hatchets are buried, corpses have their hair coloured, and someone has cancer. And apparently small Yorkshire towns are in a weird time vortex, where itā€™s still the 90ā€™s, in the 00ā€™s. Itā€™s a fun, enjoyable movie, with heart. The cast is the best thing about it. So many wonderful actors in it (and Josh Hartnett for some reason.). I really enjoyed it the second time around, as well.

Chamane (Shaman, 1996)
A Moscow violinist and a Yakut shaman escape from a Soviet Gulag. But while they escape, the shaman is killed. That doesnā€™t stop him from guiding the violinist, though. A lot of wondering through the wilderness happens, helpful people are met along the way, and spiritual growth is reached by the end. A wonderful film. The music is the great and fits the landscape well, and the performances are enjoyable. I liked it.

(M)uchenik (The Student, 2016)
Veniamin is a little too fond of the olā€™ Bible. At first he challenges the girlā€™s bikini swimsuits for P.E. class, and then things escalate. A lot. The schoolā€™s administration is pretty rigid and useless, except for the Biology teacher, who tries to understand and oppose Veniaminā€™s views (and the whole world it seems). His mother is a bit useless, as well. The film deals with fundamentalism and lots of other topical issues, and itā€™s all done with hilarious satire. I mean, this film is funny! And scary! The performances are great. I only disliked the way some of the teacherā€™s interactions with other characters were written andā€¦ staged I guess. But I loved the film, and greatly recommend it!

For how long didn't rain in your country?

reply

I'm not sure... it wasn't that long, but it was very hot this past week. And it actually started raining this night. Was it very hot with you guys as well?

reply

Actually,in past two days was very hot...i think 30+celsius.Then in the afternoon we had some short and violent rainfalls.

reply

Yup, that must have traveled down to us, thunder and hail all night. At least it's cool now lol

Meetings with Remarkable Men (1979) - based on a book by the mystic and mystificator Gurdjieff, where he tells about supposed strange experiences and acquaintances in the Orient. Beautiful scenery, sets and costumes, but mostly fails as a movie - the incoherent scenes and lack of character development make it boring. Could have been a great spiritual adventure movie, but it is not. 6/10

Firebase (2017) - two weeks ago I was telling you about my love-hate relationship with Niel Blomkamp and his new project - series of unconventional short movies, which he hopes one day to turn into full movies. The new short, Firebase, is a nightmarish almost surreal story taking place in Vietnam during the war. I would call it "a twisted superhero movie". It is available on Oats Studios youtube channel. The next one, Zygote, is coming in two weeks. 7.5/10

reply

Awesome! Thanks

Slow week for me, no movies, only TV series. Had to do a lot around the house and garden. A bit of rain would be nice here too :)

casting jonbenet (2017): very weird approach to a crime documentary. totally failed in my opinion. 1/10
pretty little liars season 1 - 3 (2010): so far so good. not sure how they gonna drag it out for 7 seasons, but it keeps u hooked enough to continue watching. basic story arc is fine with some filler episodes, but oh well. also, 2 of the gals are really pretty. 7/10

The Untouchables-1987 Still a great movie 8

Billy Liar-1963- Tom Courtenay, Julie Christie. About an emotionally immature man who has fantasies and makes up stories to survive in this world. Usually at the cost of his friends and family. It does have a comedic premise but is really a very
sad story about the loneliness of one person who can't relate. 7.5

Reservoir Dogs -1992 Another Classic -8

Mistaken For Strangers-2013 A documentary about the music group The National. Very well done. It turns into more
of the relationship of 2 brothers. 7.5

Youth-2015 -Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, Rachel Weisz A terrific movie about getting old, relationships, regrets and life in general. The cinematography is beautiful, the music is incredible. A superb performance by Caine. 7.5

Stone, I just watched Everybody Wants some last week I think. I totally agree with your review.
I liked Hotel Rwanda a little better than you. If you want a powerful movie about that war see Sometimes In April.
You won't be disappointed.

reply

The untouchables is one I always liked. I agree with your rating. I don't understand why but there always seemed to have a 'hater's club' for this gangster flick.

reservoir dogs need a rewatch for me too, I mostly remember the 'big scenes' but i remember giving it a 8 too.

Youth looks interesting.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll look it up.

Transformers: The Last Knight- this movie was so bad that I walked out in the middle of it. 1/10

Baby Driver- pretty good movie. I'd watch it again when it comes out DVD. 6/10

Been bingewatching season 3 and 4 of Homeland. 8/10

reply

Haha, another great review of The last Knight... looks promising.

I re watched my username on a plane because I was bored, 9/10

Chungking Express: This is my first Wong Kar-wai movie, and it was pretty great. I'm looking foward to watching his future movies, especially In the Mood For Love, 8/10

Baby Driver: I don't think ive ever laughed out loud in a there since I was like 8, but this movie changed that. (SPOILERS: The scene where he shows his voice recordings in front of Kevin Spacey). Great movie, 8.5/10

I also watched the first four episodes of Black Mirror season 3, and I fucking love that show, but I can't really give it a rating.

reply

Chungking express is on my watch list.

A I might give black mirror another try it I started the first episode once but I was too tired and fell asleep

reply

The first episode of the first season is one of the less interesting. The next two episodes are of the best!

reply

Ok, ok, you motivate me.

reply

Black Mirror may be hard to get into because every episode has a different cast and usually the plot is slow burning but if you stick with them, it's usually worth it. A really great show, imo.

reply

Hey, I don't think i've posted on one of these for a few weeks. I've been busy lately and doing more book-reading than movie-watching, but I did watch a couple this last week.

The Pit and the Pendulum (1961, US)
In the 16th century, Englishman Francis travels to Spain to visit the castle owned by his brother-in-law Nicholas Medina, to inquire into the fate of his sister after he hears about her death. Nicholas is evasive about what exactly happened, raising Francis' suspicions. As he continues to investigate, it gradually comes out that the castle has a dark history and Nicholas' father was a brutal torturer in the Spanish Inquisition, and that Elizabeth's death may somehow be related to the history of the castle.

Panic (2000, US)
This movie is a bit of a hidden gem, which I only found because Donald Sutherland is in it. A middle-aged man whose father runs a contract-killing business is facing a midlife crisis, stuck in an unhappy marriage and mired in self-doubt, and gradually comes to the conclusion that he wants to get out of the "family business". He approaches a therapist to find some direction in his life, and meets a younger woman who makes him feel alive again. But his father isn't willing to let him go, and threatens and blackmails him to get him to murder his next target, which turns out to be his therapist himself.

reply

Cool, I did not know about Panic. Thanks

reply

I've seen it Stone and will vouch it's worth viewing.
