What did you watch last week? (25/06-01/07)

Good morning ladies and gentlemen and welcome to another edition of this weekly thread. I don't know what's going on but it's raining since the month of May over here (canada, Quebec) and there's been floods and everything. So what do we do when it's depressingly ugly outside? we watch movies!

In Hell (2003 DVD): This JCVD prison movie is extremely dark, brutal and violent and that makes all its charm, because there really isn't anything else. Just raw rage and bitterness. It doesn't come close to Death warrant even though it has a better rating on Imdb. It's well executed, well acted but it's too much of your "typical prison story". 6.5/10

Can't hardly wait (1998 DVD): This was one of my favourite movies at the time and is still one of my favourite "teen party" movies. Lots of nostalgia watching this. It showcases what might be one of the greatest casting job ever done on earth. There is over 20 characters and you get to like or hate each one of them, even those with less then 5 mins screen time. This summer hit jump started so many careers it's nuts. Just great. 8/10

Hotel Rwanda (2004 DVD): I'm a fervent consumer of movies about African history and been wanting to see that one for a while now. I wanted to make sure to be in the right mood for it as I expected a gripping, terrifying and poignant tragedy. To my surprise, it actually felt light and easy. IMO, a story about a genocide cannot be too bright or else it just conceal parts of the truth. I understand that this is a story about the actual hotel and it ended well for some of them but every time something bad was going to happen in the movie, you realize a bit later that actually, it was all fine. And that happened a lot. Plus, what was I to fear with Nick Nolte's reassuring presence? Also, the 2 hours length felt longer to me as the movie seemed to take time to progress. Overall, it was well executed and the cast was solid but I just didn't get the big emotions I thought I was gonna have. 6.5/10

Again, another solitary contribution for me this past week :

Sneakers (1992 ) -- a basically entertaining jaunt which sometimes seemed like an odd hybrid of The A-Team and Mission Impossible. It contains some impressive names, notably Redford, Poitier, Kingsley, Aykroyd, Phoenix, all of whom perform admirably in their respective roles. It's also peppered with some good humor; one scene in particular had me giggling uncontrollably for about 30 seconds.

However, the last quarter of the film seemed to descend from implausibility, to absurdity to then downright silliness, which is why I downgraded it to a 6.5/10 .

It was an honest assessment Stone, involving both the pros and cons as I saw them, not intended to discourage anyone. If it interests you, by all means watch it and draw your own conclusions.

Yeah, thing is, I had never heard of that movie before so the more I read the more I was like "Hum that might be good".

T'ill that last part.

Shit. Implausible? You don't think that it's possible for the NSA to have devices that are capable of decrypting all encrypted data? I thought they could. And Cosmo was right. These days, "it is all about information." There is Wiki Leaks and thousands of cyber attacks being committed on a daily basis. That's a very true concept. In regards to that, the movie was ahead of its time.

I absolutely loved Sneakers even if other people thought it was absurd. I loved everything about it. I liked the scene where Cosmo is passionately describing to Marty about the new world order crime and Marty is looking at him like he's insane. And Cosmo says, " I don't expect for anyone else to understand this. But I do expect for you to understand this! We started this journey together!" So powerful. This movie made me a fan of Ben Kingsley because I wasn't aware of him before.

I liked the party scene especially their dancing with Liz to Chain of Fools. Liz's date with that boring Warner Brandos at that cheap Chinese Karaoke restaurant that had that Chinease guy singing Bad Bad Leroy Brown off key and with a heavy Chinese accent. That part where the entire crew set up operations at Liz's apartment and they have all that illegal spy equipment all over. She says something to her mom over the phone "No mom. Today's not a good day to visit.." Lmfao!

The way Marty's team sneaked into Cosmos's building that had the super tight security protocols. Marty being framed for the murder of that Russian diplomat. The suspense and mystery. The way they blackmailed the NSA at the end. The humor. So fun. It's great writing. Better than any movie playing in theaters right now.

I loved it all: the characters, the plot and the musical score. I would give it the same rating as you did though. I think that it's time for me to give Sneakers a re watch. Lol

You completely misinterpreted my post. I clearly said it was during the last portion of the film that I began having problems with the plausibility of how it was progressing. I never questioned the basic premise involving the NSA. How you read that into my words is baffling and yet you say you agree with my downgraded rating of 6.5/10. Strange.

Oh shut up. A 6.5 is what I would rate the movie even after watching it at least 5 times since 1992. So that's the only thing we agree upon. Why would anyone rate the movie any higher than a 6.5 is beyond me. It's a fun thriller but it isn't one of the best made. But it's such a FUN movie to watch.

Why don't you take the stick out of your ass because I didn't do anything bad except agree with your rating and discuss the film like we are supposed to do on a movie message forum. DUH.

Also, I did describe why I love this film so much so fuck you and your stupid "downgrade" which was more like a more accurate rating in the first place. At least I have the courage to admit that I enjoyed a movie rated lower than a 7 whereas you have to justify it to impress that insipid stonekeeper. He acts as if watching a bad movie is gonna end the world or something. Lol
How can you appreciate and learn what a good movie is unless you have watched some really bad ones? Stonekeeper isn't a movie buff. He's just a guy trying to impress his friends. He needs to grow some balls and really watch movies.

You do act snobbish. In the past, you have judge me based on the movies that I have told you that I watched. One time you implied that I shouldn't be complaining about how bad a sequel was if I have seen the other movies in the series. You assumed without evidence that I didn't like the other movies in the series. I felt that that was uncalled for, but I never said anything to you about how I felt.

This time with db, you've judged a good movie as possibly being unworthy based upon the reason he downgraded it. 6.5 is not a bad rating at all.

I gotcha. Although You seem to be dwelling on small details (trip on the carpet's flowers, as we would say in French), I will try to justify myself. All I meant is if you saw the first (which was known to be bad) you should've expect the sequel to be bad too. That doesn't mean you can't complain. It was just an innocent comment. Maybe next time you should just mention it so we can talk it out instead of insulting someone days after.

Thd Edge of Seventeen (2016)... I expected it to be just another dreadfull victim narrative, but was pleasantly surprised... lovely little movie...
