John Denver - Annie's Song

Any woman that has a man who would write this song for her is the luckiest girl in the world. This doesn't bring a tear to my eye. This brings several tears to my eyes. 😢😢😢😢

Thanks. I think it's one of the best.

I forgot how beautiful....you're right....tears to the eyes

reply

It's unavoidable....

reply

To take this back to our posts about "Splendor in the Grass" and Wordsworth's soul wrenching words, Roy Orbinson's "In Dreams" will bring those tears to me.😭😭😭😭

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xplKpL59sPg

"In Dreams"

A candy-colored clown they call the sandman
Tiptoes to my room every night
Just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper
"Go to sleep. Everything is all right."

I close my eyes, Then I drift away
Into the magic night. I softly say
A silent prayer like dreamers do.
Then I fall asleep to dream My dreams of you.

In dreams I walk with you. In dreams I talk to you.
In dreams you're mine. All of the time we're together
In dreams, In dreams.

But just before the dawn, I awake and find you gone.
I can't help it, I can't help it, if I cry.
I remember that you said goodbye.

It's too bad that all these things, Can only happen in my dreams
Only in dreams In beautiful dreams.

reply

This happens to me all too often. I wish there was a pill we could take to shut off dreaming.

reply

You too?😪😪 The difference is I want to dream those dreams. I want to relive...if only for a little while...

reply

I don't want to dream any of it. The awake thoughts are bad enough. I want sleep to be an escape from all those things. But most times I'm haunted in my sleep by those thoughts. Makes me even more dark and depressed.

reply

April....it can't be that bad, can it? Trust me; I know the past can haunt. But letting it keep you depressed eventually kills your emotional spirit. Far easier to say than to do, I understand, but at least try...

reply

My emotional spirit has been dead for years. No lie. But that's enough of this now. Back to more fun things!!

reply

Just pushing stuff like that aside only makes it worse. Seriously. Speaking from experience.

reply

Agree! Back to remembering beautiful things! This is an enjoyable thread, except for the one about killing pigeons. As for me, back to watching for the first time "Saving Private Ryan". Oh dear, did I just write "remembering beautiful things"? You would understand if you knew wacko me!

reply

In Dreams is a beautiful song. I have always loved it and I still do.
That being said, I associate it now with Dean Stockwell lip syncing it in the movie, Blue Velvet.

reply

Your reference to the movie "Blue Velvet" gave me negative vibes. I knew I had seen the movie but could not recall anything. I just now read a synopsis and understand the mind blank. A very disturbing film using two of my favorite songs. Thank goodness I can not vision Dean Stockwell and the always creepy Dennis Hopper!

reply

It is beautiful. Forever songs always are.

reply

This one of my all-time favorite songs. Unfortunately nowhere can I find the lyrics. Glow, by Al Jarreau (who was SO MUCH more than what he's best known for).

"In The Embers," Sleeping At Last:

We live and we die
Like fireworks
Our legacies hide
In the embers
May our stories catch fire
And burn bright enough
To catch God's eye

We live and we die

Like fireworks
We pull apart the dark
Compete against the stars
With all of our hearts
Till our temporary brilliance turns to ash
We pull apart the darkness while we can

May we live and die
A valorous life
May we write it all down
In cursive light
So we pray we were made
In the image of a figure eight

May we live and die

Like fireworks
We pull apart the dark
Compete against the stars
With all of our hearts
Till our temporary brilliance turns to ash
We pull apart the darkness while we can

Like fireworks
We pull apart the dark
Compete against the stars
With all of our hearts
Till our temporary brilliance turns to ash
We pull apart the darkness while we can

Tom Lehrer - Poisoning Pigeons In The Park Lyrics

Spring is here, a-suh-puh-ring is here.
Life is skittles and life is beer.
I think the loveliest time of the year is the spring.
I do, don't you? 'course you do.
But there's one thing that makes spring complete for me,
And makes ev'ry sunday a treat for me.

All the world seems in tune
On a spring afternoon,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.
Ev'ry sunday you'll see
My sweetheart and me,
As we poison the pigeons in the park.

When they see us coming, the birdies all try an' hide,
But they still go for peanuts when coated with cyanide.
The sun's shining bright,
Ev'rything seems all right,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

Lalaalaalalaladoodiedieedoodoodoo

We've gained notoriety,
And caused much anxiety
In the audubon society
With our games.
They call it impiety,
And lack of propriety,
And quite a variety
Of unpleasant names.
But it's not against any religion
To want to dispose of a pigeon.

So if sunday you're free,
Why don't you come with me,
And we'll poison the pigeons in the park.
And maybe we'll do
In a squirrel or two,
While we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

We'll murder them all amid laughter and merriment.
Except for the few we take home to experiment.
My pulse will be quickenin'
With each drop of strychnine
We feed to a pigeon.
It just takes a smidgin!
To poison a pigeon in the park.

OMGosh! What beautiful and haunting words. Words which can cause you to reflect. The following is a link:

reply

He's a little folksy sometimes, but Sleeping At Last has some really nice songs. Problem is a lot isn't readily available!

reply

I knew I had heard this before. It kept bugging me until this morning when listening to it again I recalled...."Criminal Minds"! I did a search: S9 - Ep3 - "Final Shot" Great Episode! CM plays some good tunes at the end of its episodes. Another one is "Be Still" by The Fray:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Vtp-p7qFI2I

"Be Still"

Be still and know that I'm with you
Be still and know that I am here
Be still and know that I'm with you
Be still, be still, and know

When darkness comes upon you
And covers you with fear and shame
Be still and know that I'm with you
And I will say your name

If terror falls upon your bed
And sleep no longer comes
Remember all the words I said
Be still, be still, and know

And when you go through the valley
And the shadow comes down from the hill
If morning never comes to be
Be still, be still, be still

If you forget the way to go
And lose where you came from
If no one is standing beside you
Be still and know I am

Be still and know that I'm with you
Be still and know I am

That's lovely. New to me. His voice reminds me a bit of Neil Young, but better.

The best Beach Boys song. I always thought it would make a good wedding song.

"I Will Love You" by Fisher

'Til my body is dust
'til my soul is no more
I will love you, love you
'Til the sun starts to cry
And the moon turns to rust
I will love you, love you
But I need to know - will you stay for all
Time...forever and a day
Then I'll give my heart 'til the end of all
Time...forever and a day
But I need to know - will you stay for all
Time...forever and a day
Then I'll give my heart 'til the end of all
Time...forever and a day
'Til the storms fill my eyes
And we touch the last time
I will love you, love you...

reply

Very simple song, but it is a "forever" song, which I think are exponentially better than "for now" songs.

Always https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLh-m1Z_feY

"Always"

I'll be loving you, always
With a love that's true, always
When the things you plan
Need a helping hand
I will understand, always, always

Days may not be fair, always
That's when I'll be there, always
Not for just an hour
Not for just a day
Not for just a year, but always

Days may not be fair, always
That's when I'll be there, always
Not for just an hour
Not for just a day
And, not for just a year, but always

reply

Love it! Love it! How could I forget such a great love song? I hum it frequently.

reply

It is a beautiful song, I tend to prefer the old torch songs. This song must have meant a lot to the men and women who had to be parted for a while during WWII.

reply

I'm sure it did. Even with the war going on it was one of the most romantic times in history. I asked my now deceased aunt if that was the case. Her reply..."Oh yes!" I could see it in her eyes. I was just listening to Jo Stafford singing "I'll Be Seeing You", which was played in the movie "Yanks" with Richard Gere. I too prefer the old torch songs. We've lost something.

reply

I'm sure that's true -- it being one of the most romantic times in history. In more recent history, in any event. Wartime, in any era, is always rife with romance and tragedy.

I met Jo Stafford once, and her husband composer Paul Weston. They were the parents of one of my dear friends, who is also a very talented musician.

reply

I love that song too, I think of my late sister when I hear "I'll Be Seeing You". She died at 26, and was a throwback like me, she loved old music, too. :)

reply

I love this song. My favourite rendition is by Harry Nilsson, a singer who's for some reason fallen into the cracks of time and shouldn't have. The Beatles, as well as many others, thought he was an extraordinary talent.

At the time he recorded this, he'd blown out his vocal chords after a recording session with John Lennon, which makes the song all the more poignant.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tM-KAEqbjjQ

reply

Thanks for posting this version, I never heard of Harry Nilsson, this was beautiful.

reply

You're welcome, and thanks for reminding me of the song. If you love this, and the old standards, you'll love his album "A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night." He brings the same poignancy and authenticity to all of the songs he sings on it.

I don't understand why Nilsson has fallen through the cracks of time the way he has, but few have heard of him. Even back when, he wasn't a big name and I don't know why. He was extraordinarily talented, and sang with unusual feeling, even when his voice was blown out.

reply

I listened to "I'll Never Leave You" right after, and it is a beautiful, song as well. So thanks very much for introducing me to a "new" singer.

reply

Beautiful. I don't believe I've heard that one more. Heart-wrenching, and beautiful.

reply

I just listened to his rendition of "Over the Rainbow". What a voice! I don't know why I never heard of him. Great talent!

reply

Oh god, his Over the Rainbow is heartbreaking. Garland's was full of longing and hope, but his was full of longing, and a loss of hope. I'm so glad you appreciate him.

reply

I just listened to it again. You're right...there's a loss of that hope with his inflection at the end.

reply

I downloaded three of his songs from the album available on Amazon. Thanks again for informing us about him.

reply

Cat,

Beautiful! Never heard of him, but I am for sure going to download it. Thanks!

reply

Glad to hear it, Ksp! I think you too would love his album "A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night." The entire album is noteworthy.

reply

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

reply

I don't know Jackson Frank! But will be looking him up momentarily. Tim Buckley, yes. I hope Nilsson and other greats, who for some reason fell through the cracks of time, will be rediscovered.

Harbor Lights

Son of a Tokyo Rose
I was bound to wander from home
Stranger to whatever I'd awaken to
Spun the wheel
Took a shot in the dark
One way ticket
And a runaway heart
A sailors dream came true
The night I dreamed of you

Through the neon doorways
Down the stony streets I fell
All hands high side all eyes a wreck
I followed
Sailing shadows reds and blues
Curtains drawn but I saw through
The window to your soul
And I found you

Whoa oh oh oh
The harbor lights of Venus
Shining through the breeze
That brings me back
To you my love..
To you my love..
To you my love
Oooooh

My eyes must be betrayin'
But that lonesome jukebox playin'
Somethin 'bout the Harbor Lights
Is callin' me
Back to some Jamaican bay
Doesn't seem so far away
Keep the change
But I'll repay these memories

Dawn came in this morning
Like some old junked out melody
The words she spoke as we awoke
Still haunt me
What you feel too
Won't reveal you
Let me steal you for my life

Whoah oh oh oh
The harbour lights of Venus
Shining through the breeze
That brings me back
To you my love..
To you my love..
To you my love...

Whoah oh oh oh
The harbour lights of Venus
Shining through the breeze
That brings me back..
Oh to you my love
To you my love..
To you my love…

Good thread! I'm hearing some beautiful songs I've not heard before.

reply

I suppose I would be remiss not to post the song my user name is from, another "forever" song.

You Were Meant for Me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqsrVQfNYPc

Life was a song
You came along
I've laid awake the whole night through
If I ever dared
To think you cared
This is what I'd say to you:

You were meant for me
And I was meant for you
Nature patterned you
And when she was done
You were all the sweet things
Rolled up in one
You're like a plaintive melody
That never lets me free
But I'm content
The angels must have sent you
And they meant you
Just for me

But I'm content
The angels must have sent you
And they meant you
Just for me

I've seen Singing in the Rain any number of times, and know this (wonderful) song, and yet don't recall this scene, nor the song in it. Thanks for posting the link to the song/scene.

You're welcome, I fell in love with this song back when I first saw Singing in The Rain.

Who can forget "Unchained Melody" (1965) by the Righteous Brothers? It was playing in the sensuous scene of "Ghost" starring Patrick Swayze, every women's heart throb, and Demi Moore.

Forgot to post lyrics:

Lonely rivers flow to the sea, to the sea
To open arms of the sea yeah
Lonely river sigh wait for me, wait for me
I'll be coming home wait for me.
Oh, my, love, my darling I've hungered for
Your touch, a long lonely time
And time goes by, so slowly and time
Can do so much, are you still mine
I need your love,
I oh I need your love,
God speed your love to me.
Lonely rivers flow to the sea, to the sea
To the open arms the sea yeah
Lonely river sigh wait for me ,wait for me
I'll be…
