Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: No, Bill Maher Shouldn't Be Fired For Using the N-Word

General Discussion - News, Rumors & Gossip
"Intent is important," writes the NBA great and THR columnist, and the HBO host's use of the word merely shows poor taste — and it could even raise awareness of today's race issues. Political comedian Lenny Bruce, who was often arrested for the ... read full story on Hollywood Reporter

Kareem is wrong. Not firing Maher encourages casual use of this word.

reply

No it doesn't. Not even close. The word is already casually used by a thousand rappers and likely more rednecks.

reply

Yeah, ka-ching for the hip hop industry whenever it is ; and conversely, " peckerwood " and "cracker" have been around for decades as well, just not as overused.

reply

According to you, since rappers and rednecks use it, everyone should use it regularly.

reply

Nobody said that at all. You apparently have a serious reading comp problem. You said not firing Maher encourages casual use of the word. I responded that it's already casually used. Not even on the same planet as "everyone should use it regularly."

How about just admitting you really want Maher fired because you don't like his politics and this was a convenient thing to jump on? If Limberger or someone on Faux did the same thing, you'd be defending them

A Conservative would be nailed to the wall for using that word, but Liberals can get away with just about anything since they control the media, Hollywood and the universities.

reply

What, exactly, don't you understand about the fact that context/intent are key factors? When has any conservative used that word strictly as a joke? Please provide some examples.

reply

Conservatives use it to cause offense, Bill Maher used it to make an inappropriate joke. There's a difference. He shouldn't have used it but I don't think he should lose his job either. He was also referring to himself as a "house nigga" so the joke was on him. It's all about context.

reply

Oh so now you can see into people's minds and know their intentions? Oh yeah right. I forgot. You're Jesus Christ.

reply

If you can't understand the difference between a bad joke and malicious intent, you should be back in school, not posting on internet forums, because you're woefully uneducated

reply

Kareem is right. See, he comes from the old school where logic and reason prevailed. Not all this fake internet/media outrage that permeates today's society.

INTENT IS IMPORTANT.

reply

I agree.
