What did you watch this week? (05/28-06/03)

I'm posting a bit earlier because I am leaving tomorrow morning and I know I won't be watching anything else. I will add the links later. I'm a in a hurry now.

So here it is.

Casanova (2005 TV): I had this on my PVR and looked it up. I almost stopped after 2 minutes when I realized there was at least 30 minutes missing to the beginning and it looked cheap. But then, a scene between Casanova and his son made me laugh so I kept watching. Then another funny scene, then another... Good thing I did not give up on this 3 hours mini-serie starring Peter O'toole and David Tennant because it was way better then it looked at first glance.
6.5/10

The arena (2011): I had to see it, I couldn't help it....
I know, I know...
Here's my exhaustive analysis:
Gore: 6/10
Sex: 4/10
Fights: 3/10
Acting: 3/10
Story: 1/10
Overall: 3.5/10

The God of Cookery (1996 Netflix): I saw this one once before and it was my least favourite Stephen Chow movie but on rewatch I enjoyed it a bit more. The first half is average but the second half is funnier. 6.5/10

Double Impact (1991 DVD): Double the Van Damme, double the fun! It's all a question of perspective, obviously. JCVD Is one of my childhood heroes and this is one of my favourite movie of his. A big bias 8/10.

F/X (1986 DVD): "A movie special effects man is hired to fake a real-life mob killing for a witness protection plan, but finds his own life in danger."
This movie was included in my JCVD combo DVD and I had no clue what it was. When I looked at the premise it looked interesting but also like something that could easily be a stinker. But the rating of 6.7 on Imdb impressed me so I went in with mixed expectations. The story was good, the FX aspect was indeed clever and original but there was too many boring "cop talk" scenes. I would've sharpened the edges and made the movie a bit shorter. Overall, it was a fun action flick with that good'ol 80's vibe. 6.5/10

I watched Twin Peaks 2017 episodes one through five, one of the best shows ever on TV. I give it 9.5/10.
I also watched Fargo (9/10), and Better Call Saul (8.5/10).

The first season of Fargo is one of my favourite thing ever. The second season was great but just not the same. I don't think I have the channel to watch the actual season so I'm waiting for it to come out on DVD.

So you're not watching season three on FX?

😎

reply

I'm afraid I don't have it. Like 95% sure.

Well okay then.

Green Room (2015) I finally saw it. Punks and Nazis and horrific violence. Everything was executed very effectively. The performances were great. And it was tense. I really liked it.

Tickled (2016) A documentary about tickling, and more. I don't want to say more, because it's best if you come in cold with this one. I liked it a lot, and it had a very interesting subject matter.

I don't know if I've seen any of yours, except Three Kings. Umm, from what I remember, not my favourite film in the world.

reply

Glad you liked Green Room. Did my review from last week inspire you or...?

reply

I had it in mind to see it for a while, and reading your review kind of finally made me sit down and watch it. So, yeah, I guess it did :)

And I have to recommend Tickled again. I know I didn't write a review, but it unfolds in such a way that I don't want to give anything away.

reply

Cool, I'll put it on my watch list.

This week was all about watching previous seasons of shows whose new seasons started recently. I watched the whole Twin Peaks and 4th season of House of Cards. It was exhausting, I must say.

reply

Haha, I feel you!

In advance of your next update, I'd like to offer my newest contribution while it's still fresh in my mind. It was a welcome respite this afternoon after weeks of reruns.

It's an Australian film titled Rogue, another giant, man-eating crocodile flick but surprisingly credible and entertaining. So much so that I thought it surpassed Lake Placid at times. The premise was plausible until the last half hour when some suspension of belief was required. The characters came across as believable and ordinary, everyday people. The scene shots of the locale were often impressive.

For any members here interested, it needs to be typed in as Territory in the search bar, an AKA title.

I'm going to bump it up to a 6.5/ 10 rating.

Hey, im waiting for your report on Hell or high water! :)

I'm actually pondering it right now, lol. I had a response prepared immediately following yours on Sunday, along with a couple of other movies because I thought it had been interesting in how we had overlapped on that movie by just a few hours on the same day. At the most inopportune time, just seconds away from completing my last sentence and posting, my pc locked up on me. I waited and no matter what I tried, couldn't seem to undo it. I had to finally just reboot which naturally erased everything I had written. I hadn't been so damn frustrated and pissed off in a long time ! Today is my first time back since then. Hey, in the meantime, check out my post on that movie's board and let me know what you think.

Arrrgh! I write all my thoughts on my iPhone and it happened in the past that some of them got deleted by my baby boy. Totally understand the frustration.
