What did you watch last week (21/05-27/05)

Gather 'round boys and girls, I reckon it's time to talk' bout them movies mhuh!!!???
I couldn't work this week because of the flu so I watched a few films myself. I think I might have broken some sort of personal record :

1. https://moviechat.org/tt3850214/Dope
Dope (2015 DVD): A charmingly fun movie about young geeks in the hood. We pretty much have all the classic ingredients: The high school, the love interest, the friends, the band, the drug dealer... Even though the story did not really stand out from other movies of the genre (which I saw most of), it was all solidly executed, well acted, had some great songs and there was a positive vibe about it all. That's how the movie stands out. I also have to note that its the first movie I see that involves bitcoins into the main plot. Well done! I'm happy to see that it has 7.3 on Imdb and 72 on Metascore.
I give it a 7.5/10, as in "That was some dope shit."

2.
https://moviechat.org/tt0124298/Blast-from-the-Past
Blast from the past (1999 TV): First, I have to admit that Brendan Fraser was one of my favourite actors in the 90s. I grew up watching Encino Man, Airheads, George of the Jungle, School Ties and I even remember watching a low-profile movie called "twenty bucks" because he was in it. (I'll have to find it someday because I remember it to be good) Blast from the past is also among my good Fraser movies. Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek are marvellous, the story is great and the cinematography is delicious. Plus, I had a crush on Alicia Silverstone at the time so this movie was made for me. Side note, it seems like Brendan Fraser is the main candidate in Hollywood to play the role of outsiders. (Encino, George and this) I would also like to point out that he did three movies that year; the mummy, Dudley Do right (we all make mistakes) and this.
Anyway, I guess we could call it a guilty pleasure of mine although I agree that the first 30 minutes is the best part and the rest is a bit less special.
7.5 as in "it IS a blast!".

3. Arès (2016 Netflix): "In a near future, the world order has changed. With its 10 millions of unemployed citizens, France has now become a poor country. Its people wavers between rebellion and resignation and find an outlet in the shape of TV broadcast ultra brutal fights in which the players are legally doped and unscrupulous. "
Don't you love it when you randomly start a movie you stumbled upon on Netflix and it turns out to be a gem? I actually was looking for Armageddon, I would've never known of this one otherwise. I don't know the director, I don't know the actors and it only has 426 votes on Imdb. It turned out to be a well-made, dark and violent movie with great acting.
7/10 as in "A bloody great surprise!"

4. Armageddon (1998 Netflix): Seeing a part of it on TV made me feel like watching it for the first time since the theatre. So after taking the "Arès" detour, I went and watched it. I can't say that I don't like it but it's way too long for me. The first half was fun, I liked the set-up. The characters are good although Owen Wilson was miscast IMO. The special effects were good but the action was harder and harder to digest as the movie progress.
6.5/10 as in "Good, with a bottle of Tylenol.

5. Are you here? (2013 TV): Talk about a weird movie... It's not funny, it's not moving or touching but it's a comedy/drama. To me it was just people doing strange things. I don't want to waste more time on this title but if you want to watch a real quirky movie about mental illness, watch Silver Linings playbook.
4/10 as in "Why?"

6.https://moviechat.org/tt2017561/Journey-to-the-West
Journey to the west ( " Xi You: Xiang mo Pai" 2013 Netflix) : "An aspiring Buddhist hero tries to protect a village from three demons. He develops complex feelings for Miss Duan, the demon hunter who repeatedly helps him, and finally quests to meet the legendary Monkey King."
After watching a crappy movie, this one did a lot of good. Its weird and crazy in a refreshing way like only Stephen Chow can do. I found the third act to be the weakest but overall it was fun entertainment.
7/10 as in "Who needs a plot when you have action like this? Not me."

7. https://moviechat.org/tt0096734/The-Burbs
The 'Burbs (1989 DVD): Forget about all the bad critics, this movie is a classic. Love it from start to finish and it's always fun to rewatch. It's all about the atmosphere and the characters.
8/10 as in "As tasty as sardines on a pretzel."

8. Dragnet (1987 DVD): this was on the same DVD as The 'Burbs so I watched it. As best as I could. It struggled to keep my whole attention. Dan Aykroyd sort of annoyed me, the script was all over the place and not too interesting nor funny. It does have its moments though.
5.5/10 as in "averagely average."

9. https://moviechat.org/tt0105690/Under-Siege
Under Siege (1992 TV): This is one of the few Steven Seagal movie I remember enjoying back in the days. It deserved a second watch. It's still very badass. Tommy Lee Jone is a real firecracker, and all the ingredients are there for a solid action movie. 7/10

10. https://moviechat.org/tt0099385/Death-Warrant
Death Warrant (1990 DVD): Jean-Claude Van Damme plays a cop that goes undercover in prison. Classic. The final bad guy is one of the craziest, coolest and hardest to kill dude ever.
7.5/10 as in "Jab, roundhouse kick, roundhouse kick, roundhouse kick, head in the dryer combo."

11. https://moviechat.org/tt5686846/The-Monkey-King-The-Legend-Begins
Monkey King (2014 Netflix): This was kind of fun. Sort of. Although I pretty much get the gist of it, many times during the film I was lost. If Armageddon gave me a headache, this one almost made me sick a few times. The special effects were way too much, and it's not like they were that good. Donnie Yen's transformation was remarkable and his facial expression's to. I wanted to watch this before seeing the sequel but now I don't even know if I'll be able to take another one of those films. We'll see.
5.5/10 as in : "Apes, humans, demons, angels, gods, bears, pandas, dogs, dragons, confusion..."

12. https://moviechat.org/tt4591310/Xi-you-ji-zhi-Sun-Wukong-san-da-Baigu-Jing
Monkey King 2 (2016 Netflix): So, just to add to the confusion, they changed the main actor by the guy who was playing the demon in the first movie. That being said, I quickly saw another major change; they took it more seriously this time and the director upped his game. The cinematography and the special effects were better, the script had more structure, the action was awesome, the characters were well established. All that, with a smaller budget. Strange isn't it?
7.5/10 as in "Just skip the first one."

reply

13.
https://moviechat.org/tt4062536/Green-Room
Green Room (2016 Netflix): I have to say that the first half of the movie got me worried as it was not crazy or scary as I thought it was gonna be. The second half though...intense violence right there my friend! The way the action unfold is so surprising and realistic that it makes it all very exhilarating.
7.5 as in "very exhilarating."

Thanks man, uncle John looks decent.

Do you like todays Chinese movies? I've watched every Asian film on your list but I pretty disapointed of them all.

The problem I get with these newer generation of Chinese movies, the usage of dated CGI technology aside, was the blatant attempt to insert pop stars / idols into non-fitting roles.

Yes, Hong Kong movies have always put Cantopop stars into their movies, but at least they have hair and makeup that kinda appropriate for the period of the set.

More modern wuxia films however, tend to disregard any of these and forced too modern looking pretty boys and kawaii girls to play rugged beat-up kungfu masters or experienced generals at war, complete with funky hair and make up.

Last week I watched a movie called The Great Wall starring Matt Damon (but in actuality it really is a Chinese film.)

All the western actors don more gritty and somewhat more realistic hairdo and make up, while virtually all of the Chinese actors, especially the lead female actress, look like pop idols. They are all so clean and pretty and ready for battl... I mean, a concert. It felt jarring and is non-sensical. What were they thinking?

reply

I saw the trailer of The Great Wall. Didn't look good. I know what you mean though. Personally, I've seen hundreds of asian movies from different decades and I enjoy most of them.

1. Le trou (Jacques Becker, French Prison Drama)
https://moviechat.org/tt0054407/Le-Trou
Ultra realistic prison drama done in a documentary style that isn't as famous as Shawshank, Papillon, The Great Escape, Cool Hand Luke etc... but in some ways might exceed all of them. Its main asset is its cast... no French superstars but a group of fine character actors who thoroughly convince as true convicts... it also offers an incredible attention to detail both in the methodology used by French prisons as well as an ingenious method to outsmart them. My only complaint might be they lingered too long on digging and hammering shots... sometimes you'd feel as if you were sitting there watching them in real time. 9/10

2. The Browning Version (Anthony Asquith, Drama)
https://moviechat.org/tt0043362/The-Browning-Version
A touching drama about a once brilliant scholar with a fading career and unhappy marriage who is forced into semi-retirement by poor health. Imagine an English Walter White who instead of Breaking Bad, takes a long hard look at his own responsibility at the course his life has taken. 9/10

3. Sullivan's Travels (Preston Sturges, Romantic Comedy)
https://moviechat.org/tt0034240/Sullivans-Travels
Socially conscious comedy that must have been a favorite of the Coen Brothers (The main character's movie proposal is called "O Brother Where Art Thou" and certain elements echo "Barton Fink") It's about a director who's tired of shallow commercial success and decides to live like a hobo to find out what it's truly like to be poor. Veronica Lake is excellent as the disillusioned starlet who runs into Sullivan (the director) just as she's about to give up her dream and return home.

4. Arrival (Denis Villeneuve, Science Fiction)
https://moviechat.org/tt2543164/Arrival
Amy Adams plays a linguist dealing with the loss of her daughter to a rare illness who becomes enlisted to help communicate with one of 12 enormous UFOs that have suddenly appeared in various locations around the world. Jeremy Renner is a scientist who becomes part of her team who begins to fall for her during the crisis. An important message film about the importance of communication and diplomacy over saber rattling as well as a few other philosophical dilemmas. 9/10

5. Sing Street (John Carney, Musical... sort of)
https://moviechat.org/tt3544112/Sing-Street
John Carney has made another gem of a film about the subject he knows best... the music scene in Ireland. Ferdia Walsh-Peelo plays Conor a suburban kid growing up during the recession in the eighties, who is forced to relocate to a new school in the rough part of town. His family argues and fights all the time, bullies torment him at school and the only happiness he finds is with his music and his fanciful pursuit of a beautiful "older" girl who dreams of becoming a London model. Is it the most realistic movie... no, but if you look at it as a musical rather than a drama then it all makes much more sense.
10/10

6. Split (M. Night Shyamalan, Thriller)
Three teenage girls are waiting at the aftermath of a party with a parent waiting for one of the girl's rides to come. Two of them are good friends, the other (the one with no ride) seems to be a loner who they've only invited out of social obligation.
When the ride doesn't come... the father offers to drive her home, but before they even get started, a strange man knocks out the father and kidnaps the three. The kidnapper (James McAvoy) seems to be at conflict as to what he should do with the young ladies and we soon find out that it's because he suffers from multiple personality disorder. (continued)

6. Split (continued)
https://moviechat.org/tt4972582/Split
The movie then becomes rather silly... or does it?
it really bothered me when the supposedly intelligent older woman gets out of a cab in the middle of the night goes into an isolated underground building... sees how disturbed her patient is... and then after finding one of the girls... stands there like an idiot instead of immediately running for help. However, it then revealed to be more of a superhero film than a psychological drama... so in that context it seems less idiotic
So for I'd give it a 5/10 or 7/10 depending on which category you think it belongs.

I also watched new Twin Peaks... and half of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
https://moviechat.org/tt3339966/Unbreakable-Kimmy-Schmidt
Two unbreakable shows in one week!
Twin Peaks I've discussed in the thread many times. Love it.
UKS is a brilliant show... I don't even like half the characters but the writing is so brilliant I don't mind. Best consistent use of callbacks since Curb Your Enthusiasm.

reply

Re: Split. The
superhero
element was so not set up IMO, that I can't look at it like that. It just happens and makes the previous how-ever-long of the film a bit pointless or irrelevant at least. That's the impression I was left with at least.

reply
Well it does explain (poorly) the way he's able to suddenly resist shotgun blasts to the chest... When he was climbing walls it was getting unforgivably stupid... but then they explain it's part of the Unbreakable mythology so then at least for me... I could forgive some of it.
I do give it credit for being interesting for more than half the film.

reply

Yeah, but that explains it only if you've seen
Unbreakable. It's like two completely different movies otherwise. Half is psychological thriller, the other half superhero nonsense. And I'd argue it also kind of switches protagonists at the end there. I think From Dusk Till Dawn did this switcheroo a lot better.
But still, Shyamalan tried, and there are some good stuff in it, but overall I just can't buy it.

Edit: This formatting bug is really making my spoiler tagging difficult lol

reply

I feel you and 10 Cloverfield Lane also did some variation of this better also. But that's why I said it be a 5 for some 7 for others... At least for me 5 is pretty low score. For acting and production values it deserved at least that.

reply

Yeah, I agree with you. I guess I'm just in an argumentative mood this morning.

reply

Heh... I don't mind... it helps Stonekeeper with his thread.

reply

Hey buddy!

Did you watch Le Trou in French? that's my primary language.
I plan on seeing Arrival, Denis Villeneuve comes from where I live so I always supported him.
Have you ever seen Incendies?
Your thoughts?

reply

Yes, with subtitles.

I think Villeneuve is fast becoming one of the great directors... but so far each film has been one step away from perfection... Incendies was like that... I kept waiting for a huge moment... and although it was good it didn't quite make it for me. Same with Arrival... maybe Sicario or Prisoners came the closest for me. Really looking forward to Blade Runner

reply

Polytechnique is a good one too. A shocking true story.
Sicario I liked the least.
Prisoners is my favourite.

reply

Thanks for recommending Polytechnique... I will try to hunt that one down.

I've had a busy week, so I think the only movie I watched was "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales", which I saw in the theater just today (it's still Saturday where I live). Incidentally, this was the first time i've gone to the movie theater in over two years (I live in a rural area with one little movie theater and it never seems to play anything that looks appealing).

It was fun, though it had kind of a different feel from the other POTC movies, in my opinion. I felt like it had a bit less of the POTC spirit. It was heavier than usual, the dialogue was kind of wanting (particularly compared to the POTC norm), and I felt like Jack Sparrow wasn't quite his usual fun, witty, clever self. Still, I enjoyed the experience overall, and hope the series will continue. And hopefully get some better writers to bring it back to its old glory.

reply

Even the most terrible film will seem pretty good after not watching one in the theater for two years (No troll)

We've all been hoping for a repeat of the magic of the first one for four films now. I'm beginning to think it's not going to ever happen.

reply

I watch a lot of movies, just not in the theater very often. I think my expectations are realistic enough.

Also, I actually really like all the first four POTC movies. It's kind of a sliding scale though. The first one was obviously the best and always will be, there's no challenging that. I really like Dead Man's Chest and At World's End, though I agree with some of the criticisms of them; they weren't perfect. On Stranger Tides was alright, but Blackbeard was a bit of a letdown. Dead Men Tell No Tales, though... It just didn't have the same feel as the other four. Something was missing. It's like the series is getting burnt out.

Maybe Johnny Depp is just getting tired of it, I don't know. He is getting older after all, 16 years since The Curse of the Black Pearl. I'm reminded of that James Bond movie, Diamonds Are Forever, where you could just tell that Sean Connery's heart wasn't in it anymore. Maybe Johnny Depp is getting to that point.

I did like Captain Salazar though, a lot more impressive and menacing of a villain than Blackbeard, who mostly just boasted about what a bad man he was.

reply

I didn't mean to imply anything about your movie knowledge... only that being in theater will enhance the experience way beyond even the best home video set up.

I could enjoy the Dead Man and At World's End but in general they just seem to slowly be deteriorating. I like the original so I keep hoping for someone new to revive the series but it sounds like this just isn't meant to be.

reply

Hey man!
I noticed that you watch a lot of Asian movies so I was anticipating you commenting on those I watched this week.

... Maybe you just haven't seen them...

I only saw the first and 2nd POTC, both at the theatre. I found them to be averagely entertaining. I bought the third one but never watched it yet.

reply

Blast from the Past was okay... but I hardly remember it... if you liked the actors it would help as the story is pretty generic.

Armageddon is a tolerable Michael Bay film... not as good as The Rock but better than all the loud shit that came later. Decent popcorn film... I'll give it that.

reply

I've seen The 'Burbs, and I enjoyed it a lot. Dragnet we used to have on VHS when I was a kid, and I'd watch it all the time. Those drugs looked so much like candy, that my mouth would water. I might hate it as an adult though.

Arès and Green Room I've been meaning to watch for a few weeks now, but I can't seem to get around actually doing it.

Zodiac (2007) Follows the attempts to identify and capture the Zodiac killer in the US. No one ages in this film. It’s Fincher, so it’s not bad. I liked how they showed the passing of time. The performances were good. But I wasn’t as interested in what was happening on screen as I was with other Fincher films.
https://moviechat.org/tt0443706/Zodiac

After Last Season (2009) We have the best worst movies ever made, and then we have the worst worst movies ever made. This one is The Worstest! Pure nonsense and ineptitude. Oh, and then there’s the soul sucking boredom. Is it a scam? A senseless waste of celluloid? Whatever it is, it’s incredibly perplexing and ultimately sad, because if this was a sincere attempt at making a movie it failed on every level. Just feast you eyes on the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7qCOe8WG4I
BTW, this has a 6.6 rating on IMDb! So much for gauging quality from a rating…

The Running Man (1987) Arnold Schwarzenegger “plays” a cop that is inflicted with a terrible condition, that causes him to speak only in terrible one liners. I guess there was also a plot in there somewhere. For what it is, it should have been fun. I did not have fun.
https://moviechat.org/tt0093894/The-Running-Man

Grave (Raw, 2016) A young prodigy goes to vet school. They have some pretty messed up hazing rituals. That unlocks latent cannibalism (and other desires) in our heroine. I came into this without really knowing anything about it. It’s a very well made, unsettling film, with a nice sprinkling of humour. Just don’t go in expecting a gore fest or pure horror, because it really isn’t that kind of film.

Zodiac: goo but too long. 6.5/10

Running man: not as good as it was back in the days. Did not age well at all. 5.5/10

I think it's awesome that Arès is on your wachlist but I'm curious, how did you hear about it?

reply

I thought Zodiac was great, didn't have a problem with the length at all ; truly a thinking man's movie .

reply

I have trouble remembering this movie. My quick googling reveals apparently there are two of these Zodiac movies. One was 2006 by Bulkley and Fincher's was 2007. I'm pretty sure I've watched both, just mixed them up. Maybe I'll rewatch one of them to make sure which is which.

This is just like Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down. Sigh.

reply

I was referring to the 2007 movie.

I'm surprised you didn't respond to Only the Strong. I thought this was right up your alley given your previous comments.

reply

What do you mean by Only the Strong?

reply

It was a martial arts action movie I watched this past week and critiqued on here; just thought it might be something you would enjoy.

reply

Ah, I haven't see that movie. Mark Dacascos doing Capoeira? Interesting.

reply

I accidentally discovered Arès browsing a site and the premise seemed interesting. So I didn't really hear about it, as much as stumbled upon it. Now, all I have to do is watch it lol

reply

I remember the period detail in Zodiac being excellent... it's a true story so that could account for the more low key narrative.

reply

I changed it. Thanks for that catch :)

It's still a very good film, and there's a lot to like about it. I don't know if subtlety was my "problem" with it. I would've liked if it was a bit shorter and more condensed. But that would've taken out a lot of the story, and make it a different kind of film maybe. So the problem is with me really, not the film itself.

reply

I don't blame you... it is quite long... I remember it starting out with a bang... and then it kind of dragged on and on... but that was the case, so what can you do. Obviously they couldn't do much with the resolution either. I saw it in the theater so it was probably easier to watch that way also.

reply

I agree. If they wanted to present a more full view of the investigation, that was pretty much the only way to go.

And watching anything in the theater (for me at least) makes the film watching experience itself (even the film sometimes) a lot better.

The Homesman (2014) https://moviechat.org/tt2398231/The-Homesman

A gritty tale of characters in a frontier town during the American settler days, and the journey of a tough woman played by Hilary Swank, who gets Tommy Lee Jones to accompany her in a wagon ride to take to safety three women who have lost their sanity on the prairie. A very good "new" Western.

reply

Hey, Stone . My contributions for the past week are :

Only the Strong -- a very unoriginal, predictable movie in the vein of Dangerous Minds and The Substitute films . What was different was its utilization of the unique martial art of capoeira and the scenes where it was displayed was probably the best aspect of the film. 6/10

Spy Game -- a very enjoyable rewatch of this top notch espionage thriller. Good, dynamic interplay between Redford and Pitt. 8/10

Barton Fink -- Wow ! The sudden change of direction in what initially appeared to be a quirky film caught me off guard and startled me . But then, after I reminded myself it was a Coen brothers film, it naturally made sense. And of course, it's loaded with ambiguity. 7.5/10

Jackie Brown -- another enjoyable rewatch; it had been a number of years since the first viewing and I had forgotten much of it. Good characterizations by all the actors IMO but the ending left me feeling disappointed. 7.5/10

Pi -- this movie was often harsh and disturbing to the senses but I decided to follow it through because I was genuinely interested in the basic premise. Again, ambivalent about the ending. 6/10

reply

Spy games: I really like it too! 7.5/10

Barton fink: this one has all the elements but somehow it just didn't quite do it for me. 6.5/10

Jackie Brown: I'm due for a rewatch too. Remember most of it though. I think. 7.5/10

Pi: a good debut for a great director. it's definitely not for everyone. 7/10
