Mini Moderators?

Hey, so I just thought of an idea that could help limit troll posts, but not sure how well it would work in practice. Anyway, what if we could delete replies on threads that we post? I.e. If someone posted something disrespectful here, I would be able to delete or hide it. Granted, that could end up being abused, but it might help a little, maybe.

reply

Jim (founder)is steadily updating this site.

reply

I never said he wasn't. I know he's working very hard on this site.

reply

Yeah but...if we could do that to the trolls, then the trolls would be able to do it to us.

reply

Good point... Oh well. Just a thought.

reply

The ignore option sounds better,

reply

True, but this is just a suggestion. Thought of it this morning.

reply

Yes, I agree that the Ignore/Block, Report Post features, are better options. Anything too over the top can be reported, and Admin can handle it case by case. This is one area in which I think that IMDB got it right.

One thing that I noticed about IMDB was that if a post were reported, the Admin's would often delete it regardless of whether it was within the bounds of the rules or not. I had some of my posts deleted, and I never posted anything bad there, but apparently someone disagreed with what I had posted. That's why you have to be careful with this sort of thing.

reply

You mean mini dictators? Like them on theforce.net?

reply

Ah, theforce.net, the board that won't tolerate any dislike for a Star Wars movie or TV show. I know it well, unfortunately.

reply

ikr

reply

Mods aren't evil if you choose them wisely.

reply

Yeah. With great power comes great responsibility.

reply

Right :-)

Oh by the way I'm not too fond of your idea. Being able to delete any post in a thread you created is an open door to censorship and circlejerks.

I wouldn't mind some real mods we could summon with a "report" button though. An impartial team.

reply

Mm. Again, it was just an idea that popped into my head this morning and thought I'd share it. Having second thoughts about it's effectiveness now, lol. But trustworthy mods would be good.

reply

I'm afraid there's no such thing as impartial anymore.

reply

C'mon man, all it takes is a little faith :-)

reply

and Discernment.

Good points. Except insults depends on the situation, I think.

reply

Absolutely.

Their presence is also nice to remind people there's an authority. Because anarchy leads nowhere.

reply

See guys, this is why we need moderation in here.
Look at this guy's posts. But PLEASE, don't feed him.

He's basically trolling, posting things in irrelevant boards. And he is not the only one (there's that one guy calling everything "gay" and yet posting gay NSFW links).

That kind of behavior is just driving this website down, I hope Jim will look into it.

reply

I've only seen his threads here in the General section, but see he's posted the same kind of stuff on a few boards.

I've read a few of his threads and just shook my head, wondering what he's getting out of this -- or hopes to get out of it -- and then move on.

reply

Ohh, now it makes a little sense. I haven't either read the book or seen the movie.

reply

Probably quoting the book and other websites, just like this one (in his "Make Copy Pasting Illegal" thread).

This is just spam, we really don't need this :-/

reply

The guy seems like a real nut bar...the kind that I will gladly avoid from here on out. Thanks for the heads up, Traveler!

reply

Honestly, I didn't think it was that bad, at least the one about brands. Until I realized he could have copied and pasted someone else's work to pass it off as his own.

reply

Well yeah the point isn't that it's bad, just that that guy is spamming these boards by pretending he knows things.

We can see he tried to past too many words in one of his thread because the last sentence isn't even finished. It's ridiculous.

reply

who r u taking about?

reply

It's hard to find a type of moderation that's fair while also not able to be easily abused. It might take a couple iterations to get it right. It's definitely something that needs to be considered heavily, thought out, and properly implemented.

I hope and believe Jim is already thinking over and working on this issue. Any good site needs it in some way!

reply

No disrespect towards the OP, but I gotta admit that I got quite a chuckle out of the title of this thread, when upon reading it, my mind immediately conjured up an image of Napolean Bonaparte πŸ˜€

reply

Lol. No offense taken, that's great! πŸ˜‚
