Because I'm so f***ing happy this website exists. Mostly because the majority of the threads and messages from the original IMDb message boards were saved.
I love you to the people who did this! You made my day. I hope with time this place blossoms.
" that's not a boundary i'm interested in pushing." Agreed. And I was taught "Only those whom don't have a command of the english language resort to using swear words." I don't care if someone uses them, but to use them purely to get a rise outta others, naw.. Now, hate-speech is on an entirely dif level. I abhor the N word, and every other derogatory word for a group of people.
Yeah...that is the one word I hate with a passion as well. I think it is the most vulgar, disrespectful word one can say. I definitely hope I don't see this here again as it is a huge turn off for me as well. I'll ignore anyone I see use it immediately! Hope we get a ignore button soon too.
I agree. It's attached to too much horrendous history and pain, past and present. There are thousands of swear words that could have been utilised and the n one didn't have to be one of them. I hope he made a genuine mistake and didn't mean anything by it. That word is used so often in modern culture, music and films that it makes youngsters desensitised to it thinking there aren't negative repercussions with its use.
I guess it's okay that it's between them because they know they're not being racist towards each other but rather calling each other 'bros'. It has two connotations, and it depends on the race that uses it to decipher which is being used, I'm thinking.
Then why is it socially acceptable? Why did our former first lady hold vulgar rappers in high regard as "role models" for young people? I think it is a double standard.
Those are questions I'll never understand. I grew up in a era where it was NOT a friendly word. I still agree with that as words do not change meaning with time. Maybe you should ask the former first lady that question.
All I'm saying is what I think of the word...and I KNOW for a fact that I'm not alone on this.
LoL @ little trolly minds. Troll is such a cute little word, too bad they have to be such nasty little things. But you're probably right Apis...hopefully. π
Was he a troll before? I seriously doubt mental sanity of people who enter some place, see one post they don't like, make a public announcement that they didn't like it, and run into their safe zone without giving it a second chance.
If you were referring to me, you couldn't have it more wrong. Someone posts a comment and doesn't follow-up with further replies is....OMG....a troll or a sock, whatever that means. I don't recall stating I was leaving MovieChat, just this thread. You and those that follow don't know me. Yes, I was greatly offended by that poster's remarks and I had a right to say so. If you accept comments such as those that is your choice, but I don't accept profane language. Today I happened upon this thread again and after reading the replies made against my statement, I know I made the correct decision.
Oh, believe what you will. As stated, today is the first day back to this thread. Why should I return? When I made my comment the thread was fairly new. Little did I know I was setting off a firestorm! I chastised the poster and left.
I don't know who is who but this makes it all the more obvious that we can't be trusting people who claim to be previous IMDB members on their word alone.
I'm definitely an IMDB member. Have been since 2007. And, why are you the way you are? Throwing the query back to you! If you are referring about the gossip mongering, I can't help you there. It seems these message boards have become a cesspool of naysayers. Akin to a neighborhood with cliques. Several getting together, tongues start wagging, because a new person has moved into the neighborhood. "She/he is not very friendly. She/he keeps to herself/himself. I wonder what she/he is up to? Very suspicious if you ask me." After that folks who would not necessarily be guilty of gossip gets sucked into the cesspool. And, these are the ones who were so nice to the newcomer! Strange, isn't it how the pack mentality works with humans, also.
Thank you! You made my day! I felt like a leper on this board/thread, whatever. All due to my reply to a foul-mouth poster. I was the "newbie" and how "childish" it was for me not wanting to play the game. How dare I "pick up my marbles and go home!" This is where we are today....anything goes. There is no delineation between right and wrong. If we protest uncouth remarks and prefer civil discourse, we are "thin skinned". I, for one, refuse to succumb to the barbs social media has wrought and those hiding behind an electronic device with anonymity. Again, pack mentality...and as you say "popular mentality".
I'm standing beside you on every word, kspkap. This, all of this, is why I haven't been on any other social media site almost 2 yrs now; Facebook after 13 months, I decided to deactivate 4 nights ago, and if those personal (as in real outside of FB) don't stop pestering me as to my reasoning, I will totally delete my account (there IS a way). Example of the worst: A certain someone, my Beloved, told me he didn't appreciate me showing such disrespect for him by deactivating my acct. WTF?!?
I know it's going to get even worse over time, but I don't have to be a party to it now or later in person, or online. This free-for-all has led to open violence in..our..streets, not to mention online behavior prompting more & more of what we're seeing in the news. I'm totally sick of it. It's getting to the critical point when one can't go to the post office or the local Wally World without caution, and being older, it's a sad thing to see given the fact we use to be able to sleep through the night with our windows AND doors open.
I can hear the tongues wagging over our desire to have a cordial communication board. "Why are we here if we cannot get past the profanity, if we are offended by the hateful vile spewing forth, etc.?" We should go with the flow? Discussions with lively debates are what these boards should adhere to. Their response, "Must be a troll with socks on!" Here's a troll, there's a troll, everywhere a troll! Nonsensical comments! Just for calling to task a poster with a foul mouth!
Can you believe I signed up for FB just a few weeks ago? Not to post or get into the game, but to locate a business owner who had moved her shop. I had left an item to be repaired. I've been a member of IMDB since 2007 and started posting to one board just last year due to an interesting tv program. I have no need to tell the world about my private life. I did make a cyber friend (pen pal) on the now closed IMDB message boards. We exchanged email addresses so we can continue to correspond each other.
"I can hear the tongues wagging over our desire to have a cordial communication board. Why are we here if we cannot get past the profanity, if we are offended by the hateful vile spewing forth, etc.? We should go with the flow? Discussions with lively debates are what these boards should adhere to. Their response, "Must be a troll with socks on!" Here's a troll, there's a troll, everywhere a troll! Nonsensical comments! Just for calling to task a poster with a foul mouth!"
Nope, the world is certainly not what it was. Can you imagine how it'll be once the generation of those who remember civility are no longer among the living? No wonder my son's thought about a vasectomy!!! Saddens me, yet I completely understand.
"Can you imagine how it'll be once the generation of those who remember civility are no longer among the living?"
Not only has our speech become severely coarse, our culture has spiraled downward. It's become like a cancer which has metastasized even reaching our once great bodies of government. Respect for others in mixed company has disappeared. "But, they're just words!" They reply. How sad those that utter such foul language, spew such vile venom are unable to curb themselves among strangers. The f-bomb has become a normal part of their limited vocabulary. We hear it in movies, so it must be OK. Do movies reflect society or do we as a society influence the movies? Odd thing though, many great movies of yesteryear were produced without the foul language.
The mores of our culture began the downward spiral in the 1960's. The free love, anything goes, hate the establishment mantra had begun. I regret to say the only good thing that came out of those tumultuous years was giving blacks equality, the right to vote, etc. I've lived through both cultures so I can say without a doubt...I prefer the genteel culture. We could listen without flinching, we spoke without causing someone to flinch. Respect! That is the society I miss and sad to say it's forever gone.
I just joined, but due to your childish post, I'm calling it quits....all within five minutes."
I respect your decision to leave But I do find it strange that one would register on a site and only go to the one thread where swearing (something you find childish) is being discussed.
I mean, there are so many other topics to choose from here..... so many discussions on film and television.
There are so many intelligent posts and topics to choose from. I just find it childish to register on a site and leave it within 5 minutes over one topic that you find childish.
I don't feel the need to use colorful language all of the time and I certainly don't care for that N word being used but I'm not about to blast someone for expressing themselves or quoting lines from films in colorful language.
I like the very fact that we don't have to filter ourselves a refreshing change.
I guess I just find it odd that this person comes to this one thread that they find so distasteful when there are so many topics here to explore.
Suspicious was what I really wanted to say but I didn't want to sound paranoid.
This person obviously didn't want to be here in the first place....
Hell! Maybe I am paranoid! LOL!
Surprise! You do know me. We've engaged in pleasantries recently. You folks shouldn't jump to conclusions and gossip about someone you don't know. In fact, you shouldn't gossip at all....Woodstock!
Sorry ksp, but considering it was shortly after this site opened, you have to admit it DID seem rather odd at the time. We were all getting the feel of things then, so were unsure of each other and whether or not some people could've had their old IMDb user names hijacked by trolls.
Which brings me to the question: Why did it take you 23 days to reply to this? You have to admit, that's kind of odd too. Don't get me wrong, not saying you're a bad person as we've had lot's of great, friendly convos since then...but it's just weird that you would wait so long to reply to something like this and I'm curious as to why.
And you're right, gossiping is not nice. I generally try not to get caught up in such a devious practice as it really isn't friendly at all! So, again...I'm very sorry.
"Sorry ksp, but considering it was shortly after this site opened, you have to admit it DID seem rather odd at the time."
My answer would be like so many other "refugees" from IMDB, I was searching for a good message board. One where I could be comfortable. I happened upon MovieChat so I registered. This thread was the first I went to because I abhor profanity and lewd comments. It was a new thread and to my dismay the third post was vile! "Well, strike this thread!" I said my piece and left.
As to why it took me 23 days to reply. I had no reason to return to the thread. I put it aside. I concentrated my reading and replies on tMDB. The administrator had installed a profanity filter. In the meanwhile I was searching for posters I knew at IMDB so I would drift to other sites such as this one.
As it so happened last week I located one here on MC. In order to make contact I had to login. Since it had been awhile when I registered, I could not for the life of me recall my password! I had to register again as a "newbie". If you recall I stated I had difficulty logging in so I just added an "s" to my screen name with a new password. I also, regretfully, got involved with the online game of "Pearl's Peril" which takes an inordinate amount of time. "You can't fix stupid!" The message boards were put on the back burner.
It was still bugging me though about the prior registered ID and password. Good Grief! I had two accounts with MC and surely did not wish to be called that evil name that is so freely thrown about....A TROLL! BTW, I was named such due to me not posting again. All of you were in that gossipy "clique" I wrote about. This week I began entering every password I could think of I had used in the past...voila'...I got it! Now, I'm in a quandary. How do I delete one of them? I think since this one has been a bone of contention I'll sign out and use the revised one. As of yet no one has raked me over the coals with using that one.
But, to alert everyone, I don't post/reply often so please don't refer to me as that ugly thing who lives under bridges! So sad how freely people refer to others as Trolls, Doxxers?, Socks, Nazis, Racists, etc. To me...that is nothing more than online bullying!!
Understood. Yeah, I realized, after asking you why it took you 23 days to reply, that there were no notifications available at the time, so you couldn't have known that anyone replied to your comment unless you happened to return to this thread on your own. I probably wouldn't have returned to this thread either had it been me.
Yes, I DO remember you having stated that you forgot your password and had to add the "s" to your username. I am very forgetful these days as my short term flew out the window around 05, due to a strong epileptic medication that I take for severe back spasms. It has graduallly depleted my short term memory to a point of, often times, forgetting things within a few short minutes. Some memories last 10 minutes and some, more repetitive things, I can manage to hold onto for a bit longer. But it really sucks for the most part. But...there is an upside to it...I can re-watch a lot of newer films as if I had never seen them before...lol! π Thankfully, my long term (before 05) is still pretty sharp though. I may have told you all this before but I can't remember...so pardon me if I have.
Yes, I see you got your old account up and running again, good for you! I don't think there's a way to delete multiple accounts yet, perhaps later on Jim will implement that in. I think right now, he's just focusing on the absolute necessities. I know how you feel when you can't remember the simple things though...such as your password or something...it drives me nuts too! But no worries, I won't rake you over the coals for that, no matter which account you use. And again...so sorry I got caught up in that convo on the swearing thread, I feel really bad about that...honestly. You've been pleasant to talk with and I enjoy that. π I'd be a bit pissed at being labeled as a troll too...especially at a new site where I just registered. It wasn't fair to attack you like that and I wasn't really paying attention to what I was saying. At least I haven't run across the one with the vile mouth again and he/she DID have the decency to finally delete his/her nasty comments.
I never posted nearly as much on IMDb as I do here either. Too much BS to wade through. I was more of a lurker and enjoyed reading a lot of the more, educational, comments on older films for different insights or things I wasn't sure of. But this place seems quite a lot better than IMDb as far as the people being friendlier and more genuine...except now we're getting a lot more trolls now so I'l, stick more closely to the good people I'm more familiar with and continue to enjoy conversing with them...including you of course. π Right now, I don't want to ignore too many trolls because my convos with good people will also disappear, and I don't wanna lose all that in the process of ignoring 1 troll. When Jim irons out the ignore button so that it'll delete JUST the troll, then I'll start cleaning house. So far, I've only put 2 on ignore. And I'm with you...bullying is ugly and I'm not in the habit of being one but HAVE been on the receiving end enough...so, I know how you must've felt. I'll be more cautious of who I following suit with in a convo from now on. π
"I am very forgetful these days as my short term flew out the window around 05, due to a strong epileptic medication that I take for severe back spasms."
I'm well aware of the effects of anti-epileptic drugs. My daughter takes Neurontin for pseudo epilepsy, another drug for back spasms, something else for another ailment. I've seen how weird these drugs can make you. She also has suffered from short term memory loss and hallucinations.
As far as the undesirables go on these threads, just use the minus sign on their posts. You've shut the door on them temporarily while still retaining your favorable conversations. Of course they'll turn back up like the obnoxious relative or acquaintance we all know!
You do seem to be a nice person who got caught up in the "game". It's easily done. Years ago when I lived in a neighborhood I too got caught up in a gossipy clique. Nice to the person's face, but we could sure tear her apart behind her back. It wasn't in my nature to do such hateful things, but there is always a leader of "the pack" and I wanted to "fit in". I was a stay at home housewife with two small children and I was bored. One day I heard a very wise statement to the effect of: "If these people are talking about her this way, what are they saying about me when I'm not around?" I realized I didn't need the busy bodies anymore and concentrated on getting a good job in order to better myself. I worked nights until my girls were in school. My husband cared for them in the evening. OMGosh! I'm so out of tune with today's way of doing things! Geez! All of the above occurred before the "net". Funny, isn't it...the "net"? The net that caught us, the good and the bad!
This is serious stuff! Kids have committed suicide due to bullying. These so called trolls as you refer to them are nothing but the lowest common denominator on the human scale. But, we need to be attentive to the vernacular we use when referring to people we don't know or who don't quite fit in with our way of thinking. Just sayin'
That's exactly what I take...Neurontin/Gabapentin 1800mg a day....along with 9 other meds 2x a day. Started at 1200mg in 02 and felt like I was on a non-stop acid trip for 2 weeks...lol! Colours were super vivid and beautiful, my walls were melting in my bedroom, I would walk aimlessly into traffic while going to the grocery store. Things like that...lol. On my 2 week follow-up with my orthopedic, he asked me how I was feeling and, I told him, "I'm feeling pretty good but, are the walls suppose to be melting?" He laughed and said, "Maybe we better lower your dose for a bit." It was wild, man...I was Julie Andrews twirling on the mountain...lol! So, I was lowered to 900mg and was fine then. After a few weeks, I went back up to 1200mg and no more mountain twirling or melting walls. But I did notice, after a few years, my short term memory was really starting to get bad and, continued in a downward spiral ever since then. It's very nerve racking but if I stop taking the drug, my pain will become unbearable. I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't.
Yeah, I've used the [-] sign a few times but it gets to be a hassle having to keep doing it every time you go back to the page or refresh it so I just sort of step over them now.
And you're right, I'm as nice as they come, and can fall into that web of deceit all too often if I don't pay enough attention to it. I have to remind myself that not all people are as nice as me and can be really ugly with gossiping and lead me straight to it without me realizing it. They're sneaky that way. It's definitely not in my nature to purposely be cruel to other's, never was. Yep...the good ol' "net". Funny how they call it that, eh? π
I know, bullying is nothing to be taken lightly, it's a serious problem! Fitting in with the likes of these bullies/trolls is never going to happen either, they are just scavengers who prey upon us good people so they can tear us down below their level in order to feel powerful and feed their ego. That's pretty much what it's all about in their little, useless minds. Otherwise, they basically have no self worth.
"That's exactly what I take...Neurontin/Gabapentin 1800mg a day....along with 9 other meds 2x a day. Started at 1200mg in 02 and felt like I was on a non-stop acid trip for 2 weeks...lol! You were tripping, my cyber friend! Sounds just like LSD which was prevalent in the free love '60's, man! You were playing like one of those flower gals!
My daughter's soon-to-be ex-husband had her Baker Acted three times to no avail. He's been dealing with her for over eight years. She was seeing phone numbers on his truck steering wheel so she accused him of cheating! The violence she accused him of doing was done by her...doors kicked in, cabinet doors ripped off the hinges. She had him arrested for knocking her down....he didn't. He put up with more than most men would do. He lived in fear she would have him arrested again as she threatened to do when he didn't abide by her demands. After six years he left, as his stress factor was through the roof, his BP was skyrocketing, he couldn't sleep. etc. As a result of leaving he's off medication, his health has returned, but we've lost the best son-in-law anyone could hope for. Such a sweet, decent man. He'll always be the son we didn't have. So sad what prescription drugs are doing to society. She continues with the doctor who is a known pill pusher.
Yep...it was definitely a trip to watch me trip...lol. I was like a flower child that didn't have a care in the world. Love & Peace and flower power was what it was all about for me. I actually grew up in the 60's...or I should say, was born in 60. But all in all, it was an awesome time to be around. I truly miss those days. It was a nice, temporary return trip there on the neurontin too...lol! π
Wow, that's terrifying! π² So sorry! There are a lot of pill pushing docs out there, fortunately, mine aren't. Can't she maybe see a different doc? Or maybe try a different med? That's just too dangerous to keep her on meds that cause that to keep happening.
So sorry about your son-in-law too, he sounds like a saint. Hope you guys still stay in contact. Maybe if your daughter can get a better doc and get stabilized on some different meds, maybe they can reconcile and get back together...if the meds were the only problem. I know, it's easier said than done but, not impossible.
Well, either way, I hope things get better for her and all of you.
Off topic. There is something strange included in my list of replies. One states I replied to you about The Exorcist. I didn't. Could you check your notifications to try and locate it? I'm unable locate the reply. When I click on the reply it takes me to the Exorcist home page board.
Looks to be that the troll must've gotten angry at what I said and deleted our convo there. But, yes, I did reply to a post that you left there and now my reply, your reply, and the, person I think may have been a troll that kept replying to me about having so many posts, is gone. The whole thread is gone and I can't retrieve it. And that's why you can't find it now. Maybe he put us all on ignore...lol. π
Is that the one where I defended you and your frequent posts? If he did delete, how did he do it. On IMDB only the one who sent the reply could delete or they fell off after 21 days?. How dare he! I put a lot of thought into that defense! LOL!
Yes it is. I was thanking you for it and agreeing with you.
I should've said, he put us on ignore, not deleted. I did that with someone else and it took away a whole convo that another person and I were having too. When the other person got the notification, he also couldn't see our whole convo and didn't see my reply. Luckily, I was able to CCP our convo and start it in a new thread.
Well, we didn't lose anything important at least. And thanks for helping me out there. He probably put us both on ignore cause he couldn't handle 2 of us...lol. π
Why suspicious? Just because I chastised a foul-mouthed poster and left the thread? I don't accept the vile language used. That's all...nothing more. I felt when reading his/her post why waste my time? I'll leave and go to more pleasant boards. And, I was correct in my choice. Just read the shallow comments made about my reply and decision to leave.
As I replied to Apis, you don't know me. I choose not to engage in profane language. My comment was directed to the poster who chose to lace his/her comment with profanity. You folks stuck your noses into a reply which didn't concern you. Please respect my choice. I also did not state I was leaving the site...just the thread. How shallow, and also childish it was to deride me for my comment. If this is all you had to comment about, then nothing was to be learned from this thread. I made the correct decision to leave. So, back to the more informative (not gossipy) sites I shall return.
My apologies...... I made an assumption and the assumption was wrong. I assumed by what you said, that you were leaving the site because of the bad language and you had only been on the site for five minutes. As I said in my post, it seemed odd that out of all of the boards and all of the threads here, you chose one about profanity..... the very thing you don't like. Forgive me. It seemed strange at the time.
I'd like to get along with people here and that includes you. I don't propose a close and meaningful friendship. Being civil will do.
I would like to point out that I did not feel that I was sticking my nose into something that did not concern me. Most people do chime in on a public message board. I wasn't aware that your announcement that you were leaving was a private message to someone. My bad!
Anyway, I wish you well. Hope you don't sour on this site altogether. Most people here, including me are quite nice.
Apology accepted from you also!ππ€π€ We shall continue to converse as the air has been cleared. There is enough discord on these sites. We don't need to add to it. How's that for a new beginning?βΊοΈ
BTW, I was so taken aback by that vile poster's remarks, I didn't think beyond my response and wanted to get the he-double hockey sticks out of here. Remember it was a new thread and he was the third poster. You are correct in stating it is an open thread. I just didn't realize the firestorm I had created by replying and leaving.
Altairo...Personally, I find your choice of words repulsive...namely the N word, it's a great way to turn people away from this site...as you just did with, kspkap. We are trying hard to build our community, not chase them away.
Yes, you can. However, even though I've been indulging in it here and there, out of respect for the site being so new I've been trying to exercise some self-discipline in this area.
Noooo, combat it with your better posts! If all the good people stopped posting than the place would really become nothing, but a swamp and this will get shut down too. As bad as IMDb was, from my experience, there was still enough of a balance between the crappy and the awesome to not make it miserable.
Having posters like you will make be what makes people stick around and make it worthwhile and maybe think, "well...that one person is shit, but look how many others aren't!' I don't know, I just feel like that's a surefire way of this all going down the tubes.
That's exactly what I've been trying to explain to the registered users of other IMDb alter-ego sites with the intention to bring them in here. I wish people had a stronger troll filter and better focus on the good stuff.
People who used to be moderators or admins of other sites used to tell me on IMDb that there were ways of getting rid of trolls if it was actually desired by the folks running the site. Apparently, they'd banned a few trolls themselves and saw what good it could do. We'll see if Jim is really serious about cleaning up Dodge, or if he's just going to talk about it like Col Needham did, then blame the trolls when he has to throw his hands up in despair. (Although actually, I think the trolls were secondary, as bad an issue as they were on IMDb. Amazon simply couldn't make any money off of the boards.)
I agree. But I honestly wasn't planning to. I only asked this question to colourfully emphasise the gratitude I have for this board. But swearing is the lesser of two evils where trolls are concerned, so I'm not going to complain if people did swear.
