Hello Maddyclassicfilms,
among those already listed here, "Rockford" has always been one of my favourites. "Columbo" wasn't bad either; but I don't like that way to develop a story - in other words I don't like when the viewer knows all the time "whodunit"; it's much better IMHO to give the answer only very late in the movie's time...
One series which hasn't been mentioned as yet has been aired years ago on German TV, some time later it got a re-run on another German TV channel - and then it disappeared into oblivion. I'm talking about
"Delvecchio"!
Anyone remember this one? It wasn't a long series; there were maybe 10 or 12 parts, not much more...
I'll never forget that it had a wonderful film music theme while the opening credits were shown. I remember a big-band-style arrangement with much brass, some long trombone (?) or trumpet solo - just wonderful...* sounded like a "clip" from one of those superb LP's of late Billy May, or from a slightly older Ray Anthony LP, who knows :-)
And of course, as it's so often the case with such gems, there's NO dvd-set available anywhere. And there's no soundtrack LP either...
Kind regards
Andreas (123all4me)
*) as an afterthought - could it possibly be on youtube by now? I'd really love to hear that "Intro theme" again...

Columbo and Rockford.

Rockford is my favorite and The Rockford Files holds up, it was a well made show.
I saw an episode of Kojak recently and it was good. Been a while since I've seen Columbo.
Also was a big fan of Barney Miller, which wasn't really a detective show even though they were detectives.
