I feel that living in Rome when it was a republic, before it became an empire would have been interesting. Or living there after it became an empire and having a decent respectable position in society.

I chose to end at 1966 because after that was the rise of the counterculture, the unrest of the late 60s, and so forth.
California during the 1960s and 1980s. The state was a much nicer place to live back then, and better managed.
