shareI asked mom about it years ago as a kid, and she explained that it was part of that ridiculous "Back to Africa" movement that started in the late 1960s and exploded in the 1970s, where the Black Community decided to try and get back to their African roots and do some very lame attempts at adopting styles relating to their ancestral homeland (it was all BS, of course, because nobody in Africa played jazz music, sang rap music, or wore Afros or wore those ridiculous, loudly-colored tunics like that), and part of the movement involved giving their kids ridiculous, African-sounding names. The worst one I heard about was a mom naming her daughter "Propecia," thinking it sounded pretty, when it's actually the name of a pill.
