Yes, a function of society. The same societies that are responsible for an inordinate amount of human progress during the past few centuries. No one should ever feel guilty over that, nor feel guilty for maintaining an in-group preference. And more importantly, no one should feel constrained from making decisions based on that in-group preference. Those arguing that you de facto shouldn't are to be ignored. They're attempting to impose an immoral standard of behavior on others.
