the test Black applicants couldn't pass in maryland

you may have heard that there is a settlement coming for poorly treated Blacks in maryland because the tests for police wrongly disqualified them.

https://marylandmatters.org/2024/10/03/state-police-agree-to-pay-2-75-million-to-settle-federal-probe-of-discriminatory-hiring/

"The Police Officer Selection Test (POST) is a written test of an applicant’s abilities in math, reading, writing and grammar. A passing grade is 70%, and would-be officers can retake the test up to four times in a year in an effort to pass. Applicants who fail are eliminated from the program."

"According to the Justice Department investigation, however, the skills assessed in those two tests were not actually essential to a trooper’s job performance. And while 91% of white applicants were ultimately able to pass the POST test, just 71% of Black applicants were able to so. "

one of my favorite twitter follows was nice enough to post the study guide given to applicants that includes samples of the kinds of skill testing questions applicants will face.

you can find the questions starting on page 9 in the link below.

Perhaps you shouldn't be protecting the public if you have the mental age of a 10 year old.

this is a good thing to keep in mind every time you see these perpetual stories of class action lawsuits & payments being made for disparate impacts of standards.

justice is being done again.

https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-secures-agreement-durham-north-carolina-end-discriminatory-hiring

he Justice Department announced today that it has secured a settlement agreement with the City of Durham (City), North Carolina, to resolve the department’s claim that the hiring process for firefighters in the Durham Fire Department (DFD) violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. Specifically, the department alleges that the City’s fire department screens applicants with a written test that discriminates against Black candidates.

Under the terms of the consent decree also filed yesterday, DFD will:

Adopt a written test that does not discriminate in violation of Title VII and provide data to the department on the administration of the new test to ensure compliance;
Pay $980,000 in back pay to applicants who were disqualified by DFD’s uses of the challenged test; and
Hire up to 16 applicants who were unfairly disqualified by the challenged test and who successfully complete the new firefighter selection process.

some people are saying that this isn't right because fire departments should have some standards, but if you look at the test, i'm sure you'll understand why 37% of a certain group couldn't pass it, requiring the feds to step in and right the wrong done.
