I bet the Kennedy clan would dispute that claim. JFK’s ancestors hailed from County Limerick in western Ireland. Only Northern Ireland is part of Great Britain.
No one I know with an Irish background claims to be British, including friends and some relatives by marriage, e.g., the wives of some of my uncles.

Just a little anecdote, many years ago I worked with someone who was Irish American. Due to my last name which is very WASPY and definitely British in origin, he used to make some nasty remarks.
He never considered our somewhat common background. Oh well…
