Dominik Hasek calls Alex Ovechkin a 'chicken sh-t,' wants NHL to suspend all Russians

Hockey Hall of Famer Dominik Hasek has called for the NHL to "immediately suspend contracts for all Russian players" amidst Russia's deadly invasion of Ukraine.

The 57-year-old Czech also had some choice words for Washington Capitals' Russian-born star Alex Ovechkin, a supporter of President Vladimir Putin.

Hasek, who played in the NHL for 16-seasons and is widely considered one of the best goaltenders of all time, called Ovechkin an "alibist," a "liar" and a "chicken (expletive)" after Ovechkin failed to publicly denounce Putin and his country's aggression.

"Every adult in Europe knows well, that Putin is a mad killer and that Russia is waging an offensive war against the free country and its people," Hasek, 57, tweeted Saturday.

A day earlier, Ovechkin was asked whether he supports Putin amid the invasion.
"He’s my president but … I’m not in politics," Ovechkin told reporters on Friday. "I’m an athlete and how I said, I hope everything is going to be done soon. It’s a hard situation right now for both sides... I'm not in control of the situation."

While I wish all Russian athletes would speak out against Putin, I can understand their reluctance if they still have family back in Russia.

I also see Hasek's point of view, who was born in Czechoslovakia, and has personally witnessed the effects of Russian/Soviet aggression.

Wow, doesn't take Americans much to turn on the bigotry...

Not sure how you're getting that from this article. Hasek was born in Czechoslovakia and currently lives in the Czech Republic. Last I heard he's thinking about running for president there.

What do hockey players have to do with government of their country of origin? That's textbook intolerance.

This is straight up commie shit right here. Russia doesn't want nuke pointed at them from Ukraine. Nato is infringing where they shouldn't be, and Russia is responding appropriately. I'm sure Russian people do not want their families under the threat of missile attacks, any more than the Ukrainians do...

And? He played in the NHL from 1990 to 2008. He spent 18 years alone in the US playing hockey that's plenty of time to adopt American attitudes and values. Being an American is mindset, not skin color or genetics.

That's crazy talk.

Here's a guy who is Czech, who witnessed Russian aggression in his lifetime, and is speaking out against Russian aggression, and somehow that translates for you into 'Americans turning on the bigotry'?

"Being an American is mindset, not skin color or genetics."

Skin color or genetics were never mentioned. American is a nationality, as is Czech. Until the majority of actual Americans start calling for Russian players to be suspended by the NHL, you can't say that's the 'American mindset.'

These people are hockey players. They have no say in what their countries do. Sports are supposed to be politic free, to bring people together. But the communist Democrat party/media and their lemmings have politicized sports, like they do with everything they touch.

The places where politics should be discussed and debated openly they shut down open minded discussion and censor. They’re a cancer.

As I recall, Hasek was a great goalie BUT he was a bit of a weirdo. Hasek is probably still mad that Ovechkin scored goals against him. Ovechkin did say that he wanted the war to end and he wanted peace in the whole world.

Russian-born NHL player Alex Ovechkin has expressed his hope for an end to hostilities after Russia invaded Ukraine.

"I would say it's a hard situation," the Washington Capitals left wing said at a Friday news conference. "I have lots of friends in Russia and Ukraine. And, it's hard to see another war. I hope it's soon going to be over and there's going to be peace in the whole world." Ovechkin has been careful to show his support of both countries as Russian-American relations have soured in recent years, but when pressed about his friendship with and previous support of Russian President Vladimir Putin at a Friday news conference, he took a neutral stance. "Well, he's my president. But, how I said, I'm not in politics. I'm an athlete," Ochevkin replied. "How I said, hope everything's going to be done soon. It's a hard situation right now for both sides. Everything, like how I said, everything I hope is going to be end, and I'm not in control of situation."

As usual, you need to go somewhere other than CNN to get the entire story.

In 2017, Ovi, who currently holds the nhl record for most points scored by a Russian-born player, launched the social movement PutinTeam to help campaign for the president’s re-election.

The home page of putinteam.ru includes a photo carousel with an image of Ovechkin and the message: “Hi, I’m hockey player Alexander Ovechkin. I created the PutinTeam to unite those who are proud of Russia and our president, who want to make our country stronger.”

As of Friday, Ovechkin’s Instagram profile picture was still an image of him and Putin together.

So, as far as Ovechkin is concerned, he hasn't been passive in supporting Putin.
