GOP now says Riots are "Legitimate Political Discourse"

WASHINGTON — The Republican Party on Friday officially declared the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol and events that led to it “legitimate political discourse,” and rebuked two lawmakers in the party who have been most outspoken in condemning the deadly riot and the role of Donald J. Trump in spreading the election lies that fueled it.

The Republican National Committee’s voice vote to censure Representatives Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois at its winter meeting in Salt Lake City culminated more than a year of vacillation, which started with party leaders condemning the Capitol attack and Mr. Trump’s conduct, then shifted to downplaying and denying it.

On Friday, the party went further in a resolution slamming Ms. Cheney and Mr. Kinzinger for taking part in the House investigation of the assault, saying they were participating in “persecution of ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse.”

After the vote, party leaders rushed to clarify that language, saying it was never meant to apply to rioters who violently stormed the Capitol in Mr. Trump’s name.

“Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger crossed a line,” Ronna McDaniel, the Republican National Committee chairwoman, said in a statement. “They chose to join Nancy Pelosi in a Democrat-led persecution of ordinary citizens who engaged in legitimate political discourse that had nothing to do with violence at the Capitol.”

But the censure, which was carefully negotiated in private among party members, made no such distinction, nor is the House committee investigating the attack examining any normal political debate. It was the latest and most forceful effort by the Republican Party to minimize what happened and the broader attempt by Mr. Trump and his allies to invalidate the results of the 2020 election. In approving it and opting to punish two of its own, Republicans seemed to embrace a position that many of them have only hinted at: that the assault and the actions that preceded it were acceptable.

I'll remember that the next time they bitch about BLM.

reply

No doubt! The GQP has really reached a new low with this one...

reply

of course, blm only did billions in damages in 2020, antifa destroyed federal buildings and business, but as always, no one cares about that. repubs have one peaceful protest against a sham election and suddenly dems are against protests.

dems would have done way worse if Trump had won, everyone knows it. Trump had to build another fence around the WH to keep him and his family safe.

dementia Joe said he would lose by chicanery and Hillary said not to accept the results of the election.

reply

"Hillary said not to accept the results of the election."

I'll bite - what's this about?

“not concede under any circumstances.” Trump took HRC advice

reply

That's a nothing burger, August 2020 to boot...

What ISN'T a nothing burger is Jo Jorgensen, the Libertarian Party candidate on the ballot in most key states in 2020. I'd bet some digging would reveal Democrats going out of their way to make sure she had the money and the lawyers to file all that paperwork...

But the guys selling you mattresses and car insurance on right wing radio know that that doesn't keep you tuned in...

reply

2020? that was a nothing burger, anything that happens in the past is a nothing burger. but keep trying...

reply

Ask the guys poking you in your cage why they're not talking about Jorgensen...

reply

ask Hillary on why she said not to concede the election.

reply

I think the difference is the what they were protesting against.
That cop definitely killed that black thug in captivity. Its a thing - its real , it really happened .
It was police brutality .

whereas your "sham election" is complete horseshit as proven by the complete lack of evidence put before the courts.

reply

the repubs were protesting the same thing the dems were protesting in 2016. it was ok for dems to reek havoc on private property in 2016.

there was also a complete lack of evidence in 2016, Nancy made up a bunch of theories then the mainstream liberal news repeated those lies thousands of times. it influenced people to think that somehow Trump with the help of Putin was able to hack the election. Nancy started a 2 year investigation into the 2016 election, which eventually there was no fraud, cheating or collusion was found.

Trump won because everyone thought Hillary would win in a landslide, so not many voters turned out for Hillary and more voters than expected voted for Trump.

there has still been NO federal investigation into the 2020 election, only The House of Representatives can initiate that.

dems complained and repeated many many times that Trump was going to cheat again, they complained about everything, mail in votes, removing mail drop boxes, removing ballot drop boxes. they said Putin would help Trump win again. lies were repeated everyday for over a year. so that in case Trump did win, the narrative was already set and they would then be able to protest like they did 2016, except it would have been way worse. every major democrat city boarded up their doors and windows and were ready for the democrats to protest again. Trump had to build another wall around the White House to keep his family and people there safe.

well, you guys got what you wanted, are you happy with how angry Joe is ruining America? like I have said before, things are getting worse, not better and its been over a year now.

reply

everything but the last two lines you said add up a whole load of nothing about dems suspecting cheating and finding nothing . just like reps in 2020 .
So neither of the elections were cheated right?

and the last bit .. happy?
People always say " things are getting worse" , particularly those supporting whichever party isnt in power .
Although the almost always are getting better . very braoadal , acraoos decades im talking
Besides , theres the pandeminc. Its not an easy time to asses better or worse with the effects of that tipping the balance .

reply

ok, we will do this again, and brobeans, you gotta start using spellcheck...

the dems accused Trump of cheating and colluding in 2016, a federal investigation was launched, nothing was found.
the reps accused Biden of cheating and colluding in 2020, there was NO federal investigation.

you cant complain of chicanery and then say there was none when you win.

dems complained about everything Trump did daily. remember when he walked down a ramp and used the handrail? it was breaking news for a week. my point is, that bad stuff happens in every Presidency, its just that the mainstream news and all the other talking heads never blame Biden for anything. we are literally at the cusp of WWIII and the news is like meh.

on the nightly news til about early Jan, 21, they did the daily covid death counts, they stopped doing that before biden was elected. over 500,000 people have died since Joe was elected and no one says a thing.

dementia Joe has over 50 years of Political experience and was VP for 8 years and so far not much has changed.

Trump had no Political experience and still got a lot done, things were going great for America and Trump until the plandemic happened.

didnt you actually say Pelosi said the flag should be t half mast for the killed Iranian general? why do you lie

reply

WASHINGTON, D.C.--At a press conference held on Capitol Hill Friday, mourning Democrat leaders called for flags to be flown half-mast to honor the death of Qasem Soleimani.

Flags were spotted flying at half-mast around the country, notably at The Washington Post, The New York Times, and in front of several celebrities' homes. The celebrities went out and bought an American flag for the first time just to fly it at half-mast for this important time of grief.

"The grieving process is painful but necessary," said Rep. Ilhan Omar. "As a nation, we need to stop and grieve this great, austere, revered religious scholar. He was one of the good ones."

A teary-eyed Barack Obama was also seen solemnly lowering the flag in front of his seaside mansion. “To think, this all could have been prevented with a few pallets of cash.” …

Later, Democrats clarified they meant we should fly the Iranian flag at half-mast, not the “offensive and problematic” American flag.

the classic "I meant to do that" when caught doing something shameful.

Of course, because they did far worse in 2016, they even sent death threats to electors in an attempted coup to overturn the election.

Try sticking to the topic. You can whine all day and night that it wasn't an insurrection, but whatever kind of riot you describe it, it was still a riot, which the GOP is now calling legitimate political discourse.

And no matter how much you whine about burning and looting in 2020, the dems aren't the ones calling it legitimate political discourse.

But it is now thanks to the GOP.

reply

That is sticking to the topic. Mark my words we will see another false flag killing like what happened to George Floyd to start leftist voter intimidation riots in 2024 like we did in 2020. If Trump or the Republican nominee wins the Presidency America will burn and mass civil unrest will ensue.

reply

You're a prime example of why MAGAtardation is losing steam.

Dumpy lost in a fair election, but MAGAtards choose to believe it was stolen.

Floyd was killed due to Chauvin's negligence, but MAGAtards choose to believe it was a false flag.

Covid is real and causes death, and vaccines prevent it, but MAGAtards choose to believe it's all made up to control you.

Even republicans are growing tired of you MAGAtards because all you do is reject the reality right in front of you.

reply

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! The Democrats with some brain activity (which obviously excludes you) are starting to turn on Bidiapers. Try harder.

reply

You are completely full of shit and a liar. Asswipes like you have been defending the summer of 2020 since it happened and if I had to guess, you are a member of antifa and/or BLM and probably participated which is why you won't condemn the murders, rapes, arson, death threats, laying siege to government building (including The White House), innocent people's businesses being destroyed and the BILLIONS of dollars in damage. You are the lowest of low.

reply

it was objectively an insurrection and meets the definition clearly.

WHY DO you people keep trying to rewrite history? it happened on jan 6ths. not dec 5th, not February 2nd. because that was the day they wanted to stop Pence from finalizing the election. Multiple videos of the protesters talking about trying to find pence and kill him confirm it.

reply

An insurrection with no weapons....god you're a fucking idiot lol. Why would you give people so much power?

reply

-Multiple weapons
-multiple guns
-pipebombs found
-people lamenting they should have brought more guns
-multiple zip ties and restraining devices found.

sir I know it doesn't fit with the storyline you have in your head. besides it by definition meeting what an insurrection. You dont get to determine it isnt this because they didnt meet your level of gun threshold. just as someone is still robbing a bank even if they tried to do so with knives when they didnt have sufficient weaponry to overpower guards armed with guns.

reply

The Oath Keepers had weapons stashed in their hotel rooms which they were waiting for Dumpy's signal to use.

It's a damn good thing they weren't carrying them during the riot, right?

But oh no, that would imply rules against carrying weapons actually work to reduce deaths.

reply

The US certainly needs a third party and they probably need more. Trump, Biden, Pelosi and AOC are all a-holes. Term limits would be beneficial since the a-holes would be forced out at some point.

reply

A third party won't offer anything new. Biden and Pelosi are basically the same level of moderate democrats. AOC and Bernie are on the left. Liz Cheney and Romney are moderate republicans. MAGA are to the right.

What are we missing? Jimmy Dore/Tulsi Gabbard alt-leftists who have the least support of all the groups? Andrew Yang who fits right in with Buttigieg and Warren?

Tell me what a third party gives us that we don't already have.

reply

A third or fourth/fifth party would give voters more choices. In the Presidential race, voters of the US have to choose between the Democrats or the Republicans. There hasn't been a serious third-party candidate since H. Ross Perot and actually stole enough Republican votes to allow Clinton to become President. Everything seemed great under Clinton but it was an illusion. I believe Clinton allowed China to join the WTO and he loosened a lot of regulations. Clinton didn't believe in anything. He just wanted power so he shift his policy views based on what would boost his chances for re-election.

Biden and Pelosi are lefties whose families have been bought out by China. Biden's another guy who doesn't believe in anything. He was always the senator from MBNA.

Jimmy Dore is another comedian with a social media following who is slightly smarter than Joe Rogan but still doesn't know shit. Yang is too weird to win an election. Buttigieg and Warren are too phony to win an election.

I do believe that the country would benefit from a middle-of-the-road party that could include people like Cheney, Romney, Mancin and Synema. Presently, US voters have only two options when voting for President every four years.

reply

A third party would only give voters more label choices, not more ideas. All those ideas currently exist in the two-party system.

I do believe that the country would benefit from a middle-of-the-road party that could include people like Cheney, Romney, Mancin and Synema.
You mean a conservative party, which is only half of the GOP since being ruined by MAGA.

As much as I would like to see Cheney, Romney, Manchin and Sinema get their teeth kicked in as a third-party ticket, I know there's no way they would ever waste their time trying.
Biden and Pelosi are lefties whose families have been bought out by China.
Seriously, you're going to claim Biden and Pelosi are any more bought than Cheney, Romney, Manchin and Sinema? Please tell me you're joking. Biden and Pelosi are only lefties on the surface. Underneath they are shaking hands with Manchin and Sinema. I'm surprised you actually bought into their act.

reply

Ideas are important BUT voters are choosing people AND they need to be honest people who can turn ideas into action. I meant more of a moderate party and a party that would put American citizens first. The Pew Research Center conducted a survey of 10k people and classified voters as nine types of voters. One of the groups didn't care at all about politics so they might just vote for the most telegenic person if they vote at all.

reply

Voters can choose people in the current two-party system. That's my point. With the rise of Trump, and the rise of Bernie Sanders, both parties now encompass all ideologies.

Trump managed to win in 2016 as a republican, and Bernie nearly won the nomination in 2020.

With Biden proving the establishment can still win, there really is no room for the type of third party you described. Your third party is identical to the current administration.

Cheney, Romney, Manchin and Sinema are all shaking hands with the Biden administration as we speak, and they are all sticking their noses up at Trump and AOC.

reply

I contend that there would be more negotiating if more than two parties were involved. In the current two-party system, there is only a choice between two candidates for the President. There should be more than two choices but there are only two parties that can field national candidates.

The power brokers in the Democratic party were working against Bernie Sanders. Two big Democrat primary candidates dropped out before Super Tuesday and endorsed Biden. The only candidate who stayed on was Warren and she was in Bernie's lane. Clyburn's endorsement did wonders for Biden. Trump won in 2016 partly due to his celebrity and the lack of strong candidates in contention for the Republican nomination.

https://www.newsweek.com/michael-moore-calls-out-klobuchar-buttigieg-dropping-out-before-super-tuesday-they-couldnt-1490357

The current administration is not moderate at all. Biden appointed a bunch of lefties and Biden can probably only work three or four hours a day before he has to take a long nap.

A handshake isn't worth anything. Legislation has to be signed in order for it to be implemented.

reply

The power brokers in the Democratic party were working against Bernie Sanders. Two big Democrat primary candidates dropped out before Super Tuesday and endorsed Biden.
Yep. They are the same power brokers who prefer Manchin and Sinema over Sanders and AOC.

However, even though they coalesced against Sanders in 2020, they did it according to the rules unlike in 2016 when they straight-up cheated.

In 2016 they gave Hillary Clinton the questions in her debate with Bernie, and re-arranged the primary dates to intentionally give Hillary the lead especially with superdelegates.

By 2020, those tricks were gone, and superdelegate system was overhauled. And also it should be mentioned that Sanders' campaign didn't strategize correctly for Super Tuesday. They put all their chips in the basket that Klobuchar and Buttigieg would stay in it.

A handshake isn't worth anything. Legislation has to be signed in order for it to be implemented.
Of course it is. Manchin and Sinema are getting everything they want. And Pelosi is sitting back giggling as AOC and the Squad are blamed for blocking "Biden's agenda."

reply

Yup, still the Trump party.

reply

Of course, these are the same folks who call the president "Brandon" and cream their pants.

After they said this, part of me thinks:

While the other part thinks:

"Well because the left said 'fiery but mostly peaceful' during the BLM/ANTIFA riots so touche"
The left said the overall civil unrest was mostly peaceful. The left never said the riots were mostly peaceful.
