Pfizer says antiviral COVID-19 pill cuts risk of severe disease by 89% in high-risk adults

Pfizer Inc. said Friday that its experimental antiviral pill for COVID-19 cut rates of hospitalization and death by nearly 90 per cent in high-risk adults, as the drugmaker joins the race to bring the first easy-to-use medication against the coronavirus to the U.S. market.

Currently all COVID-19 treatments used in the U.S. require an IV or injection. Competitor Merck's COVID-19 pill is already under review at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after showing strong initial results. On Thursday, the United Kingdom became the first country to OK it.

Pfizer said it will ask the FDA and international regulators to authorize its pill as soon as possible, after independent experts recommended halting the company's study based on the strength of its results. Once Pfizer applies, the FDA could make a decision within weeks or months. If authorized, the company would sell the drug under the brand name Paxlovid.

Yay! No moar needles. Now you can snort the cure (or just take it orally).

I wonder if the right-wing, anti-vaxxer complaints about "Big Pharma" will persist. Instead of getting a fully approved FDA vaccine at no cost, you or your insurance company can spend boo coo bucks on FDA emergency authorized monoclonal antibodies and/or this pill cure. What a pleasant relief for adults acting like babies. Maybe the pill can come with a spoonful of sugar.

what about the left wing anti vaxxxers in NYC? they are against it too. Cult 46 has infected too many people so far...

reply

What about left-wing anti-vaxxers in NYC? I hope they have fun complying with municipal mandates.

Did you intend to write "Cult 46"? In terms of infecting people, I'm not sure what standard to impose on the current White House. I suppose the most obvious comparison is the previous White House, and that is... no comparison.

reply

Wow, you're mad. Seethe more.

reply

No, I'm pleased that you're reduced to not just personal attacks but pure fabrication. You said something that wouldn't matter even if it were true.

You

I wonder if the right-wing, anti-vaxxer...

Also you

This is an incredible self-own. There are no words...

The Merck pill is a little like ivermectin, except has side effects, isn't as effective, and is much more expensive...the last being the main reason they rolled it out. Bill Maher like many was bullied into getting vaxxed, but he draws the line at the booster. It's too bad we're not allowed to discuss holistic health as a factor, or even vitamins. Big Pharma is so evil even the good guys have fallen under their grip!

reply

Molnupiravir is a derivative of a nucleotide that, predictably, interferes with the RNA replication of the virus. While Ivermectin does also have a defined mechanism of action, BUT it’s against ion channels found in parasites. The only similarity is that they've been brought to the FDA for market.

Ivermectin is classified as a macrocyclic lactone. It is derived from Streptomyces avermitilis which is a bacterium. Molnupiravir, rather, is classified as a nucleoside analog (like some HIV medications) and works as an antiviral.

I don't mean they're similar in how they work, but we know ivermectin is safe and effective...and inexpensive. Hence it's been vilified by Big Pharma. Just like vitamin D; no way to profit from it. Instead they created a drug that costs $700 a pop.

reply

Yup, this is a situation where capitalism fails, but without capitalism we don't get the pills they want to sell for $700 a pop. This shit needs to be regulated, and pharmaceutical companies need to start curing shit.

reply

PfizerMectin?

Let's smear the cheap, effective human drug as horse pill....then take horse pill on patent, and sell to humans at crazy prices...PROFIT!

reply

The way I see it is these two arguements:

1. Who in their sane mind would buy something that works/does exactly like the much much cheaper over-the-counter version.

2. The reason why it's expensive is because it actually works, else why make a profit off it?

Either way, one of them is wrong and pretty obvious which one it is.

reply

The reason why it's expensive is because it actually works

LMAO. Dude, just stop. Ivermectin is cheap because is off patent, which means anyone can make it and sell it. This new ToTaLLy NoT IvErMecTin! pill is still under patent which means the owner of the patent can charge whatever the hell they want. We live in a capitalist society. The data is out there that Ivermectin works, and people can cry and call it horse paste all they want...doesn't change reality. It's all about MONEY.

There's also no money in cures. But there is in treating symptoms! Which is all these BigPharmaTM companies seem only interested in doing these days. I've made it my life's mission to stay off prescription meds, and so far at my age I'm doing pretty good(two).

reply

This is why Don Lemon kept saying Joe Rogan took horse paste for covid.

reply

Yup....smear the cheap off patent drug that works to make room for the horse pills they are converting for human use. Which probably don't work, and will also cause crazy side effects like explosive diarrhea and constipation.
