What's so great about Marlon Brando?

That's your opinion. Most, I believe, would disagree

Well that might be true if we talk about let's say the last 20-30 years of his career when he stopped giving a damn about his career and started to act like a total scumbag, but definitely not at the beggining of his career up until The Godfather (which was also an oustanding performance).

The thing his acting his generally praised for is that it was substantially less theatrical than most contemporary actors at the time. He was a "method actor" who strove for intensity and realism.

Brando is FANTASTIC!!!!!!! He is a Method actor. . .. nothing is forced.

He is not impressive!

Well for one, Brando never looks like he is acting. It's subtle, and natural. Early in his career, every character that Brando played was like he completely transformed into the character to where if you compared other roles that he played side by side, you don't see much of Brando himself. Obviously he looks like himself, but personality wise and quirks, are not there.

The only other actors that I know capable of pulling off that type of natural acting are Spencer Tracy, Gary Oldman, Meryl Streep, Tom Hardy and Daniel Day Lewis.

Now watch performances from Pacino, DeNiro, Hanks or Nicholson. You see that in every performance, those actors have some kind of quirk that is always present. It's just part of their style of acting.


But with Brando, his style was completely becoming the character with manerisms and vocal inflection and expressions and the whole thing. Built from paper and his imagination.

It really is amazing.
